Thinking about getting one of those new 3D TVs? You might want to wait a bit before pulling the trigger.

Experts agree that 3D TV is still in its early days. What this means for consumers is that there is still too little content, distribution is scarce, and technical kinks on the TVs still need to be worked out. "If you bought a new HD TV in the last couple of years, you don't need to run out and get one with 3D," said David Katzmaier.

I think the nicest thing 3D brings is the chance for some native and true 120HZ TV's (more important to my case would be Plasmas)...
 
I'll be surprised if enough people actually run out and buy into 3D TV. Sounds like a crappy gimmick like those motion smoothing technologies that double the framerate and make film movies look like cheap made-for-TV tape shows.
 
3D TV - a great example of supply trying to lead demand. Who was really clamoring for this?
 
I'm assuming none of you have seen Avatar in 3D (or any other RealD 3D movie), and obviously don't want to see it at home in 3D with those 3D glasses you probably took home with you..

That is the market. :rolleyes:
 
I agree its a gimmick... Trying to get people to replace their 3 year old TVs. Though they don't think enough to know there is a difference in a $2-4k TV then a $2-400 phone.
 
Don't get me wrong though... 3D is pretty cool, but the content, tech and price have to be there... Not sure if this will make it.
 
had edimensional /nvidia 3d (plus track IR 5.1 headphones and forcefeedback vest) on my PC for years. The 3d set up and glasses got on my nerves though. You had to configure every game and gave up in the end
 
Honestly... don't even bother with this. It's not that great and you won't need glasses in another few years.

If you do bother with it, don't go with LCD -- get a plasma or DLP.
 
If GT5 is in 3D and that technology works effectively in conjunction with the supposed head-tracking feature, I'll be buying another TV. For sure. There's room in my apartment for another TV.

Likely scenario: Poor implementation, me still happy with my 'old' 47" HDTV.

3D's not quite ready for prime-time, in my opinion.
 
not getting a 3D tv till that's all that's left on the shelf. even then I'll be looking for a disable option.
 
I can't wait for this to become main stream, then maybe we can get some decent 3D goggles that doesn't fuck you completely over on color.

The new methods don't use any sort of color shifting in the lenses...
 
I love the people talking about how "no one" wants this technology while at the same time 3D movies continue to break records, despite being limited by available theaters (Avatar opened in ~900 less theaters then the Dark Knight.)

Avatar tickets ~= All 3 LOTR movies combined.

and Alice in Wonderland beat Avatar's opening weekend...

Don't like 3D? You != The Market. Get over it.
 
I just wish they were more aggressive for 3d without shutters. Or at least have ones that work with polarized lenses...

I saw Avatar in a theater in 2D? went later on to see it in 3D at an IMAX, got a migraine and it didnt really add anything to the story... actually it was a bit distracting

Ummm, one thing about your argument. All those people went and saw those movies on a REALLY BIG SCREEN which is not the same effect as even a 62" screen. It's not as immersive. Look past the edge of your TV and the effect is ruined.

It's a gimmick, the last gasp to capture a high end market built on credit cards and home equity lines of credit that doesn't exist anymore. If the technology doesn't deliver it obviously won't drive sales. Nobody pay a premium for junk anymore.

Need 3D without glasses and with good viewing angles. Then 3D will be interesting.
 
I think 3D TV has the potential to be the next big format after HDTV, though thats probably still a long time away.

I guess I don't know what you're referring to. I've only used the newer ones in theaters (RealD or whatever) and all I noticed was that everything seemed a little darker because of the glasses, but I didn't notice any major color shifting.

I have not tried the 3D HDTV stuff yet.

The reald googles don't affect color per se. It's possible that the process is reducing contrast, and by way of that color saturation.
 
The thought of playing games in 3D has me clamoring for a 3DTV. Now if only some great games would come out that support it. As long as the quality can be on par with what I saw in the theater during Up and Avatar, I'm all over it.

The higher end (non cardboard) glasses effect my watching quality quite a bit.

and Venm I would agree that the saturation is whats being effected, that is a better way of explaining it.

I'm still excited about 3D HDTV coming to homes, but theres hurdles to over come.

Yes, I was thinking an iPad joke existed in there too the moment he said that. That or we could got with the Toyota brakes joke but I think that joke has passed its freshness limit.
