I was installing the full catalyst install (minus the free demo of lord of the rings) when the screen went blank and i got the no signal warning.

I figured it would come back in a few moments but it didn't. 5 minutes later I shut down the computer by holding the power button in. During this 5 minutes of blank screen pandora was playing normally.

Turn computer on and it seems to boot but I never got signal from the card to my monitor even during post..

I've tried shutting down a couple times including unplug and discharge caps. Still no video.

**Why don't I get signal during POST before the video drivers even think of loading?**

edit 2: my computer boots fully. I can access it's drives over the network

i may try to rdp into it

ok, i used remote desktop to get into my machine and re-install teh 10.2 drivers. it said installation was successful. However, I've rebooted and still no video.

i'm going to do a system restore to a couple days ago

yeah i just installed 10.2 on my 5850 on a fresh install of Win 7 and it just displays garbage on screen, grey banding on a diagonal, looks like 10.2 is not an option for me...

are you by chance running on multiple displays? i had the same problem yesterday. i toggle between my primary monitor and my tv fairly frequently. i was running on my primary monitor when it suddenly went blank on me. turns out it decided to switch to my tv without me telling it to. ATI drivers

robble, back up a bit..

Do you get a video at POST?

if you don't get video at POST then there is a deeper issue here.

how is your monitor hooked up? DVI? have you tried VGA?

what kindof monitor etc.. etc..

My monitor is an acer 22" lcd being run from DVI. My card has two dvi outputs and I tried them both.
I can remote into my computer however the one thing I can't see is the catalyst control panel over RDP to see what is going on there. I never could see the catalyst control panel over rdp so that isn't different.

no video during post now (or ever)

just a few quick suggestions.

check cable connections again, on both monitor and card

try a DVI->VGA

try a different monitor, unplug your monitor and/or reset it to factory default. i've had my westinghouse monitor need a reset before it'll display before as it gets stuck or something like that.

unseat and reseat the card

if you don't have video at post and the DVI->VGA doesn't work then you have something else wrong, possibly more hardware related. can you verify the monitor is working at all? (i doubt anythign would have happened but just a step in the trouble shooting)

the fact that it boots up and you can see the card in the device manager says the card itself is working but something else isn't working on the hardware side.

i would try the vga test, since i've seen cards lost their EDID information before and without the EDID you won't get video at post or at anytime over DVI/HDMI.

if you can remote in check the event logs and see if anything is throwing an error.

either way, you need to figure out if the at post video works or not, that is independent of any driver you have loaded.

So tonight I tried another dvi monitor and it didn't work either. reseated the card and all cables. still nogo.

Then I do a cmos reset on the motherboard. Reboot and I get error beeps during post. My MB has digital codes. This is the one I got:

Code 85: Display errors, if no display check monitor/video card.

I don't have another computer I can try the 4870 in. At this point I may have to RMA the card. Hope I can since I bought it second hand off the forums.

Sucks I sold my 8800 gts less than two weeks ago.

edit: on the good side, I just sold a pair of car coilovers for $1250 so I could buy a new card although that money could be better spent.

Hey sorry but I got it from a guy on craigslist and I dont even have his number anymore. Try baking it; )

I said screw it and just ordered a 5850. XFX with double lifetime warranty.

Installed a new 5850 last night and it came up. Catalyst had not fully installed from before so I reinstalled that. So far so good. I'll re-test the 4870 a little later.

Was at work remote desktopped into my home machine when I lost connection to the home machine and couldn't get it back. When I got home kinda late last night the computer fans were all going and the monitor was in sleep mode. Hit the keyboard/wiggled the mouse to wake it up - nogo. I tapped the power button on the front of the computer to tell it to shutdown normally. It powers down immediately which it does not do if windows is running. turn it back on and no video.

*sigh* I hope this isn't going to be hard to fix. gotta get ready for work now so can't mess with it.

got a little bit of time to do some testing. hooked up my other monitor to the computer (w/5850) and it worked. hooked the big monitor back up and it was working then too!

I'm thinking perhaps I have an intermittently bad DVI cable now. I swapped cable and haven't seen the problem rear again yet. but it's been less than 24 hours now. This gets me to wondering if my 4870 is still good. I'll have to test it again when I have more time.
