Ok here i am, someone who likes the genre that has been dying for years now and apart from the occasional good game (Fantasy Wars, Elven Legacy), the whole industry went kaputt on the turn based Tactics genre.

Is there anything out there that is fairly modern and still decent as far as gameplay goes? Please don't suggest any RTS games as i hate them with VERY few exceptions.

Good games that i played are:

- Fantasy Wars
- Elven Legacy
- XCom series
- Jagged Alliance series
- Panzer General Series (including the newest xbox Allied Assault actually)
- Fantasy Genreal

As you can see, none of the above is what others would call "hardcore" strategy in the likes of Hoi or EU. I find these too tedious and i'm not really looking for grand strategy but rather a smaller scale. Also, deep space games are not my liking either. GalCiv etc. are nice but i just can't get into them so much. Civilization isn't bad but really not that much of a tactics game....I just can't get used to the fact that my gunmen lose against some stoneage spearmen.

Anyone have any GOOD suggestions? Hex based, turn based, tactics game?

The only thing I could suggest would be Kings Bounty and the follow up Armored Princess. It might not be what you are looking for exactly, but it is a modern turn based game. I played Kings Bounty and enjoyed it very much. I have yet to get the follow up game.

Oh yeah, thanks for the suggestion, i played King's Bounty and the Princess also already...together with all HoMM games...

OP, if you're bored, please elaborate a little bit about some of these games. I have the original Panzer General for PS1 and PC (if I can even get it installed/DOS boxed) and it was loads of fun. I'd be interested in trying some of these games myself.

Dwarf Fortress sounds interesting.

Well bascially i come from a long history of board games and love games like Risk, Memoir '44, Battlelore, Diplomacy and the like.

I live in the darkest of corners of the redneck country and if you mention strategy board games in my community, all people think about is two by fours and beer.

So here i am, a board (bored) game fanatic with no people to play with and i rely on computer or online opponents for my fix. Bad thing about it is: The genre is dying because the "new generation" of gamers need to have everything in a hurry, everything now and turn based is just too slow, too tedious and not intersting. If you tell them that one game of Diplomacy back in the days could last WEEKS to finish, they question your sanity.

Yah, so anyways, enough of that. I'm just looking at different games right now and have a hard time finding good ones that i have not played yet. Maybe i just need to accept the fact that there is no middle ground anymore, just the REALLY easy games like Civilization and the REALLY hardcore games like Matrix' Games War in the Pacific. I guess i have to chose either side.

Oh and eggrock, closest to Panzer General nowadays comes probably Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy. Both aren't real world based but the mechanic is the same as in the old "general" games...

Ever tried any of the total war games?

I mean the battles are real time, but there's no RTS style building or anything, and the campaign is a really solid turn based game.

King's Bounty
Heroes of Might and Magic 1
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Heroes of Might and Magic 4
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
Age of Wonders
Age of Wonders 2
Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic
Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes
Warlords 3: Darklords Rising
Fallen Haven

The Warlords 3 games are excellent games but will not work on a 64 bit system. Fallen Haven is one of the best turn based I've played but will also not work on a 64 bit system.

Valkyria Chronicles on PS3. Somewhat OT, but perhaps you have a PS3 after all.

There's also Hearts of Iron 3 for the PC, though I hear the AI is horribly broken.

Armageddon Empires
Solium Infernum

Both bite sized TBS games from Cryptic Comet, a one man(I believe) indie studio with stunning art and unique gameplay.

Both have demos available and a good online community.

Total War campaign and just auto-decide the battles if you really hate real time combat. I would start with Rome, there are some mods that will make the campaign much deeper. I don't know if there is a roman conversion mod for Medieval 2, if there is you could start there. Empire is playable now but with Napoleon coming out this week it might be too late.

Give an older game called Incubation Time Is Running Out a try. I'd say the game still looks reasonable provided you use a glide wrapper. Also, I saw a game called UFO: Extraterrestrials gold advertised on steam recently. Looks to be an X-com spiritual successor. I'll second the recommendations for Fallout Tactics and HOMM3 too.

Also, there's a few turn based crpgs that blur the lines between rpg and tactical squad game. Temple of Elemental Evil comes to mind. It's very tactical from what I recall.

Another older tactical squad game was Warhammer 40000: Chaos Gate. It was good, but I had issues getting it running even on Windows XP. You could try running the demo to see if it will work before looking around for it.

Valkyria Chronicles on PS3. Somewhat OT, but perhaps you have a PS3 after all.

Agreed. Also Military Madness: Nectaris on PSN or Xbox Live Arcade.

Final Fantasy Tactics is a must play by everyone. They really need to make a sequel, one that doesnt suck, and one that isnt for GBA.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Hands down the best turn-based strategy game I have ever played.

I normally don't get into the hex grid tactics style games, but I 2nd that Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was a blast. Very addicting. Never played 4, so I can't comment on 4. The game totally looks like something I'd pass over, but once you play it grabs you.

Since you have played the "general" series I'll take it that tactical WWII games are ok so....
Combat Missions or Steel Panthers: World at War are good ones.

I never tried it, but did anyone ever play Panzer General by email?

Are any of the games mentioned in this thread playable by email? I would really love to play a turn based game against some old friends who live fa fa away and who suck at FPSers.

One of the only games that I am willing to play: Jagged Alliance 2 with the 1.13 mod(s). The source code was released for this game, and the guys over at Bear's Pit have done some amazing things with it.

One noone has mentioned that was a playstation title and played exactley like final fantasy tactics was Front Mission 3.

that game was the bees knees.

Although not very "modern", Silent Storm is still probably one of the best turn-based tactics games I've played on the PC. Ignore the expansion pack.

+1. I'm playing through this game again and it rocks. You can crank the resolution and settings since the game is older and it looks pretty good for its age. Its all about the epic strategery anyway, but the graphics are passable.

From what I've read, there is a new Vandal Hearts out on 360 also. The first two on ps1 were must plays but not sure about the newest installment.
