Logins that "transfer" from computer to computer

Hi-
I was wondering- what is it called where you login to a computer on a network, and say you download a paper to print, etc. Then later, after you logout previously, you login to another computer, and it transfers all your settings to the new computer you are now using?

Is this hard to implement? The reason I ask is my school computer lab does not have this, and I would like to avoid looking like an uniformed idiot if I request this and it is unreasonably complicated or something.
thank you.

It's a feature in Active Directory that has something to do with user profiles. Can't for the life of me recall what it's called. (Roaming profiles?) It's not complicated to set up - Just a single option is changed. However, it does require additional resources over the local profile concept.

Every time a user logs on to a machine, the machine will call up the server and request that user's desktop. If the user saved a 2GB file to their desktop, that file downloads every time the user logs in, slowing down the entire network. The server also requires enough disk space to house the desktops of each user. In an environment where there's 1000 users, that could tally to quite a bit of space.

Is it possible to limit the size of the files the user can store or are copied with the profile? I am thinking about papers here, not video files. Also- can this feature be turned on just for a group of users?

I am talking about the convenience of just haven some documents kept on the desktop that are word files, stuff like that.

Roaming Profiles is what you need to google.

Also look at the different types of file redirection.

We have a group of Citrix Only users and we force on a group policy that redirects all desktop icons, my documents & application data to the server. This way they can log in from server to server and still have the same information. If you do the my docs redirection you could force on disk quota's to take care of space on your file server

Hi-
...... I would like to avoid looking like an uniformed idiot......

What kind of uniforms do idiots wear?

The feature you are asking about is Roaming Profiles. The concept kinda sorta works most of the time. The other part of the time, the profiles get corrupted and then it doesn't work well. At least that's how it was in the old NT days when I used to support a banking dept. that used it. Not sure if it works any better these days, I bet it still sucks though.

Still is that way, or some genious user puts a 2 GB PST file in their profile and it takes 30 minutes for the profile to load lol

Oh- you didn't hear? a law was just passed- if someone is an idiot, they have to wear an idiot uniform. It is meant to cut down on general misery in society! :)

OK- roaming profiles- thank you.

Be on the lookout.

Roaming profiles and folder redirection with file quotas FTW actually since he asked for a method to limit the amount a profile size can be.
