The Jerker is Kick A$$ for this monitor!!

I really like your setup *Tommy*.

When I bought this monitor or a bit prior to it... I was looking all over for a Jerker and could not find one. I wanted a setup similar to yours. Maybe use a couple of those optional shelves they had for my Klipsch speakers, printer, etc.
I couldn't find one though. Now I can only imagine that Jerker being shaky though. I can imagine the main table shaking as you type... just by looking at it. I don't like the cut out area of the desk either.

I bought mine new in March 07 I believe.
It's performance in FPS games has always been less than optimal but still quiet playable. The thing is still running perfect but I'm thinking about selling it for a Faster low input lag monitor. Sadly those are all 22inch trash TN panels. I was thinking about a 27in LG ... as I could never live with something to small after this Westinghouse.

Quite the contrary actually, the jerker is super solid. I can put my feet up without worries :)

I have to side with everyone else that i have spoken to / read posts from in saying that this desk is the best i have seen so far. It's deepness is perfect for the westy! I can comfortable sit and have a book / hw on the desk in front of the keyboard, as seen below:

Greatest 60 dollar craigslist purchase ever! :D

I would look into 32/37/42" HDTVs. There are plenty to choose from that have 1080p, HDMI, and a coax input is nice to have too. I used a Sharp Aquos 32" for a bit before deciding the Westy was better, but a quick look on Buy.com and Amazon reveals plenty of choices. Not sure how they would fare to TN panels in terms of input lag and response times, though.

I'm not sure if I would want to go back to 1080p after having a 2560x1600 but I recently switched from a Westy to my Dell and TBH I'm not missing having the extra 7 inches. 30" is still quite large at typical distances but I would want more if I was sitting halfway across the room. The 30" is still extremely immersing when playing games and it blows the Westy away for desktop use. It's actually nice because I don't have to turn my head when glancing around like I did with the Westy. But if you don't need the extra resolution, those large 1080p TVs might be a fine replacement for the Westy if you can find one with fast response times and low input lag.

Good thing thats only in your imagination, lol. The reason these desks are so popular is because of how solid/stable they are compared to most other desks. Its a shame they've been discontinued, since I agree, they one of the best choices for this monitor.

This thread still lives.....and so does my Westy! On solid white backgrounds it has a small darker fuzzed area that is like, a bend in the panel or something...it still displays colors fine, just dimmer, almost like that area has very light tint on it. I never notice it when watching TV/DVD or when gaming.

Still a damn fine display that is going strong. Like others, I don't think I could ever go smaller than a 32" after having this thing.

Yeah totally, I am noticing some slight defects and am now ready to sell for a dual monitor setup. It was great while it lasted, but it's just TOO big for my needs now.. Got it up on CL in Chicago for 450 :p

I'll have to disagree with the Jerker being a solid desk. I got rid of it for this reason, you just graze it and everything is shaking. It is versatile though I'll give it that.

Anyway my 37W3SE is still running well without problems after a year. I'll only replace it if I can find an LCD LED in the same size that actually displays clear text. With all the processing they do on the HDMI interface with sets these days I don't see anything replacing the Westy anytime soon.

LOL.. yes! this thread still lives!

Guess Ive had my Westy 37" for coming up on 3 years in Jan. have the "smudge" others have mentioned..seems to be creeping from right to left.. almost 90% across now. Not nice, but its minimal, so I've learned to live with it.

Would be hard to go to anything < 30" now though. The Westy still has the WOW factor when people see what's on my desktop for a display! LOL. I still enjoy the larger fonts etc because of the the 1080p on such a large display from 4'.. makes reading boards like [H] much nicer for me.. as my vision is deteriorating ( 47yo..and bi foculs )

Also, man, so glad I found the Jerker. back then..late 06, Ikea was already DC'ing them..why..I cant imagine..anyway..I was determined! So, I found (1) at the San Diego CA store ( I'm in Largo FL ), researched and found a concierge service in San Diego, paid a guy $40 to go to Ikea, pick up my purchase ( Ikea wouldn't ship anything other than from their catalog sales, not from a Store ) and brought it to UPS and shipped it to me! I was proud of my determination and success at getting what I wanted!

This Jerker is the ultimate ( for me ) for Computer desks. As far as stability..strength? d00d..I could rebuild a small block 8 on this thing! Super Solid! I got (2) external shelves for it too..perfect! Industrial simplicity feel, strong as hell, and minimal.. great air flow!

mine is wicked solid. What was the base you had it on? carpet? Did you tighten everything down? mine is ROCK Solid.

Mine was on a hardwood floor. I don't see how the desk can possibility be considered "solid" even on design principle alone. It only has two posts connecting to the base... with a large font over hang. Any force on the front will bend and move forward. Take a look at OrAnGe's post above, that's a solid desk. Four sturdy planted posts, there's no give anywhere in that kind of design.

...

Either something was wrong with your jerker (you built it wrong, it's not on solid ground, etc), or your definition of graze must be different than everyone elses. :p I've had 4 different models, all were solid... no graze would shake the thing much longer than the initial bump.

holy shit, this thread is still alive? I have been considering trading in (or adding to) my LVM37w3 to accommodate the 5850, for EyeFinity

that's cause it's a workhorse, lulz... though to be honest, i'm seeing a LOT more ghosting and burn in if DPMS/screen saver isn't enabled...

I'll sell you my two...3 of these in EyeFinity would be epic. Better than IMAX even! :D

Don't mean to pile on but my Jerker is solid as a rock and I'm not even using the top shelf. I don't see getting a replacement anytime soon.

Does anybody know of a mount that could support one of these and has Landscape/Portrait rotation?

Still love mine, sometimes the screen burns in a little, so I created a slide show of a white and black image file that cycles ever 6 seconds... leave it on for a while to help clean up the burn in

Still have mine going strong since May of 2007. Its a great as ever. I wonder how 3 of these in eyefinity portrait mode would fare? It would be freaking huge...The very very large bezel though would seem to be an obstacle.

I won't be upgrading till it dies or I upgrade to eyefinity or the upcoming Nvidia version down the line.

Mine's still going strong ( knocks on wood) since September 2008 when buy.com had those great deals on these new. I will hopefully get something to replace this with a 120hz monitor down the road.

Same here.. Still going strong. I've had mine for about 3 years now! It used to be in my wife's home office but now it's living its life in my workout room as a quasi HTPC monitor / TV..

what are teh silver boxes for? and what is the ladder thing in the background? some kind of cat toy? i want more pics of the room ;)

I wish Tread and Diamondplate weren't so expensive everyplace I've seen it, that looks really nice. I like that you use the same speakers for Left/Center/Right, I'm a big fan of that.

Looks like to hold Weights/Exercise equipment.

Yeah.. the 3 silver diamond plated aluminum boxes are my homemade box jumps (a 12", 18" and 24"). The other diamond plated thing is just a homemade 8 foot long rack for various pieces of equipment. I will definitely be taking a few more pics when I get my heavy bag (100 lb boxing bag) and my pull up bar (stud bar brand name) mounted up. It's a work in progress (but almost finished). My heavy bag mount is due to arrive this week. The black thing in the background is a weight rack ( I have 330 lbs of bumper plates for my crossfit workouts. I ordered them here: http://www.pendlaybarbell.com/wesewpebupl.html )

Just a side note, there is a place here where I live (in Fort Worth, Texas) called http://www.discountsteel.com/ ..They have another plant in Minneappolis, Mn. Generally, I haven't found anyone that can beat their prices. All I did was measure my boxes and rack.. drove down to their warehouse.. place my order. They have a huge press that slices right through the aluminum. The edges and measurements were perfect. I'm even toying with the idea of doing some kind of diamond plated aluminum bevel around my Westinghouse 37" and my floor speakers (just to keep with the overall theme of the room). Good or bad idea?

Thanks for the tip I'm in Minnesota so that might be very useful. If it were me I would do it more like a cabinet over the opening and have a cutout for the TV.

That's a good idea. I'm weighing my options but I really to value other opinions (it's always nice to have someone on the outside, looking in, so to speak).

sounds decent. just make sure teh westy doesn't overheat ;). box jumps? how do u mean?

OK. Thanks for the very useful tip. Here's a good example of a box jump: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UweKybOuivA

Anyone here starting to get burn - in issues on their westy?

When I was making a powerpoint (green background w/ large red text) I got some serious images left on the screen. I flashed in between white and black for about 3 hours and they were gone, but this also happens when I have firefox open for an extended period of time (the toolbars and bookmarks don't move.

It has been great for these past 2 years, but if it is slowly dieing i may want to look into something different.. if only i had that thing you use to get different things, ahh, what is that called... Money?

:(

is that even safe? :eek:looks interesting though. i like jumping onto stuff anyways ;). some of those guys should try olympic hurdles :p. pics when you get the westy bezel though :)

image persistence is a major issue with mine. I'm not positive about burn-in. I do have some blotches now that won't go away, but I actually have read this has to do with an issue with the backlights. Otherwise I'd say I have burn-in, too...

But yeah, since the Olympics started I have left CC on so I can watch it while listening to my computer, and whenever it goes to commercial, I can see shadows of words stuck on my screen from the CC...

I do remember 18 months ago when I was on vacation for a week: my computer got so much use that I don't think the monitor was off for several days... I went to play Trackmania, and realized my taskbar was still visible inside the game due to image persistence... I want to say that last a couple of weeks... I got scared it was burned in... But it eventually went away...

My blotches will always be there, though... I won't call them burn-in as they don't appear to have anything to do with anything that I've ever left on the screen... I remember 18 months ago (when I thought I had burn-in) I read about it being some backlight issue...

Well, I bought mine less than four years ago, and it has a five-yr warranty, so I'm still considering if I should take them up on that warranty due to the blotches... They are very noticeable, but not major... screen has to be the right color to really notice them... There's a certain shade of gray that makes them undeniable, though...

I forgot to mention: for image persistence like you experienced, my experience with the Westy is that just leaving it off for a day is just as helpful (if not more so IMO) than flashing alternating solid colors on the screen...

i always turn mine off when not in use. never an issue with it! (july 07)

Just to clarify:mine turns off when not in use, too... It didn't keep my taskbar from persisting (Although I'd had the monitor for a year or two before I saw the first sign of image persistence...), and it doesn't keep the CC from persisting...

Also, since it's now used solely as a tv, it keeps switching between 16:9 and 4:3 based on what's on tv... Even though during the Olympics about the only thing's that been 4:3 is commercials, it's still been enough to always see two vertical lines on my monitor when displaying full 16:9 of where the borders of the 4:3 image were...

Mine was an absolutely new monitor from a very reputable seller... Still has 15 months of warranty left...

If I am experiencing issues that aren't the norm, I'm going to give my warranty a use, or at least try...

I should also note that prior to a few weeks ago, the monitor hadn't even been used at all for maybe 6-12 months... I almost gave it away, but am using it as a tv again after my ol' 25+-yr-old tv finally kicked the bucket...

image persistence is a major issue with mine.

Yeah I guess i would call it image persistence because the "burned in" image does eventually go away.

I was reading somewhere that the issue is due to the pixels getting "lazy". I read the best way to combat this is to flash them with black and white for a while, but i think leaving the monitor off has the same effect.

Too bad I bought mine off of craigslist. I got a screaming deal, but no with no warranty to be had I may need to explore other options
