Dante's Inferno Demo!

damn forgot this was out today.. think I may run to best buy and pick it up. I really enjoyed the demo.

Dante's Inferno is a great God of War mod. That's basically the only positive thing I can say about the game.

"Visceral" Games have no originality whatsoever. Dead Space apes Resident Evil 4, Dante's Inferno plagiarises God of War (which people seem to forget dumbs down the fighting system Devil May Cry made famous)...even the company's logo is too similar to that of Volition (Red Faction, Saints Row).

The unoriginality is far too pronounced to be ignored, let alone excused with lame "it doesn't need to reinvent the wheel" cop-outs.

Visceral Games has plenty of imagination and able to actually make two games now that are very good.

Deadspace:
  • Horror game taking place in space (more unique already than most horror games)
  • Able to strafe (which RE5 didn't even update on)
  • Award winning sound editing.
  • Game where shooting the enemy head on is bad (reward cutting off limbs)
  • Great art direction
  • Removal of HUD (all ingame and part of the experience)
I'm sorry but it doesn't even play at all like RE4. Just because RE4 made over the shoulder camera popular doesn't mean every freakin game after it is RE4.

Dante's Inferno
  • Art direction is pivital in game.
  • While controls do feel like GoW, nothing about the game presentation feels like GoW.
  • Game takes place in Hell. Not as many games do. And I mean a good scary, oppressive version of what one would picture Hell. Hell is alive and disturbing. GoW isn't distrubing.

I played this game most of last night. The retail release is more polished then the demo. The graphics are more optimized and look a bit better. I will concede the fact that the game plays a lot like God of War, but that really doesn't matter to me. I bought the game for the story line based on a poem that is nearly 700 years old. How many games let you dive into the bowels of hell??

I find the combat to be brutal and tons of fun. The visuals in the game are very striking and, to most people, would be considered quite disturbing. Overall, I think it's a fun game, but probably not for everybody. I'll be getting God of War III in March, so I'll enjoy Dante's Inferno until then.

Reviews are saying that the first few hours are great, but then are padding with repetitive fights and gimmicks. Thats too bad.. it looked like a great hold-over until GoW3 came out. Rental for sure.

yea, if you watch the reviews you can actually tell what part of the game they are in even though you have never played it, because the beginning just is sooo well done compared to the rest of the game... Even as each review bashed away at it though, i feel this strange itch to play the game... it just looks so cool.

didn't the first GoW catch some flack for becoming too repetitive?

think i'm gonna have to get dante's for at least a warm up for God of War 3...

It is a god of war clone, but very nicely made. Interesting story, and the graphics is really good. Have to say, Hell looks really hellish, with the howling of damned souls, and looks very similar to that described in Divine Comedy though of course, our hero is not some pussy poet, but a killer :D. At least in first circle... as I'm still on it, and haven't been much further in game.

So far liking it, except one thing. There is too much those button pushing sequences, even when you just want to drink from health fountain or open doors.

Why are all the reviews and press down and out about this game. I'm going to get it probably today. All the users seem to like it and thats my favorite genre of games right now.

god of war has tons of those unnecessary button mashing sequences, and overly difficult quick time events too, they are by far the worst part about this genre of games.

From what I read, the game is disappointing because it had the potential of being somewhat as good as GOW, started out very well...and then became very lame during the last third part of the game.

I played the demo, loved the demo, considered buying the game upon release, only to read disappointing reviews about the game :(

I'm also really unsure about this one now. The reviews are putting me off, and I'm currently playing Uncharted 2 (friggin amazing, that one) and just plunked down cash to preorder GoW3. I don't have any need for more game expenses. I guess I'll pick it up used when the price drops.

I haven't come across any sequences as bad as GOW (where you fuck it up 10 times cause they require light speed precision) they give more time to hit the correct button so far. I am about 3 or more hours in so far and the game is good but not as good as GOW, little things hear and there show that this as not as polished, but it is much better then I had thought it was going to be.

Play bayonetta the reaction time you need in that is far worse than GoW

Aaight so I bought the game through an ad for $35.
I have played it for about a couple of hours so far, and I'm having a lot of fun.
I really can't complain about anything.
Bad reviews mentioned the game being lackluster after the second half, and I'm not there yet so I can't comment.
But the game is a blast so far :)

The over-the-shoulder view is hardly the only similarity between the two games. Dead Space follows RE4's gameplay formula to a tee. So what if Isaac can strafe? Leon could roundhouse-kick enemies' heads off, swim, outrun boulders, jump through windows, climb up ladders, use boats, ...Dead Space's addition of strafing is more a compensation for the fact Issac is much more limited in his movement (yes due to the suit, I know) rather than some fantastic new innovation. Silent Hill: Homecoming proved a survival-horror series could adopt a more action-oriented approach without copying another game to do so.

Dead Space's sole focus on limb dismemberment is a trivial difference from the usual "aim for the head" formula. Resident Evil 4 also rewarded players for shooting limbs; Leon could initiate a kick or suplex to an enemy after one or two shots to the leg - which is necessary against enemies with armoured heads.

Space horror is hardly a new thing either. Ever heard of Doom? The space-horror theme has been done to death in films, and anybody who has seen one or two can predict Dead Space's pedestrian storyline.

I'm not saying Dead Space is a bad game at all. It's great..but small deviations from already-established norms do not add up to some fantastically original game.

Dante's Inferno copy-and-pastes God of War's gameplay mechanics to the tee with almost identical controls. User-created mods of PC games have had more originality to them than Dante's Inferno does...yet they are always called mods where Dante's Inferno is for some unknown reason called an IP. Taking the blueprints to an existing game and giving it a new coat of paint does not an original game make.

Oh, and plenty of games occur in Hell. Painkiller is the one that immediately comes to mind. One of the last levels of the original Devil May Cry takes place in Hell. Silent Hill repeatedly transports the player into a Hellish environment where NPCs are tortured and punished by Hell's minions.

Even the concept of drawing from Dante's Divine Comedy is unoriginal. Devil May Cry draws inspiration from it for its main character, the series' most popular antagonist, and several of its bosses. DMC hardly follows the source material in any way, but the fact it is used for inspiration in videogaming is still there.

As for the logo...well, the fact they can't even come up with a logo that doesn't resemble the logo of another company is complimented by the fact its two biggest games are glorified mods of older, more revered games.

I honestly couldn't care any less that its a rip of GoW. Who cares? I love that style of game, and if they want to take someone else's tried and true formula and expand (or just "use"), thats all fine and dandy to me. If it wasn't for the borrowing of ideas, we wouldn't have gotten an awesome game like Dark Siders (zelda had sex with cratos to make that game). Dante's Inferno isn't a bad game, but it isn't an awesomely unique and innovative one either.. but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

You should be slapped for saying that! Silent Hill is a better game with less combat. (Although yes I did enjoy homecoming :D)

I didn't say they are original I said not as many games are set in those environments. yes I know of Doom and Painkiller. Ok two FPS that don't feel like Hell in anyway. And Doom Barely feels like it's in space. You might get 5 games in total (a piece) for space horror and good ol fashion Hell.

Come on man. Mythology is set in every game. Damn that stupid Starwars movie for being so damn unoriginal! GoW which you refence closer to Dante's is obviously a rip of mythology. It's a fun play on it though. Presentation goes a long way. You'd hate every FPS if it wasn't because each FPS is pretty much the same game.

Btw: At Greed and still diggin the game. Lot of fun.

Agreed...plus for owners of a 360 (like me) who didn't get to play GOW, this is the next best thing...

Its a very fun game. Picked it up this weekend. Im at the 4th "level" now (Greed).

Its not the next groundbreaking game, but its fun, very fun. It plays well, its responsive. The enemy and level design are amazing. It does play like GoW, but GoW was a game I enjoyed. If people would stop looking for this game to reinvent the wheel, and just take it for what it is, they'd realize there is a ton of fun to be had.

Greed is where the game starts falling apart.

And you know how Devil May Cry and Bayonetta have those secret optional challenge missions where you have to stay up in the air for a number of seconds, or keep your combo up, or only use 1 attack, etc?

Dante's Inferno integrates those into an actual level. Yeah.
