ASUS EAH5750 Formula Video Card Review - Today we have the ASUS EAH5750 Formula video card on our test bench and we put it through its paces. The ASUS EAH5750 Formula offers a big custom heatsink and fan unit, but the big question is does it offer any advantages to gamers or is it just a lot of hot air?

The facts are the ASUS EAH5750 Formula is currently shipping for $139. This might have been worth it if it proved to provide some kind of advantage, however, it did not. As it stands, the ASUS EAH5750 Formula offers nothing compelling for gamers compared to a generic ATI Radeon HD 5750.

Funny how it mentions a 512MB version. Damn tease. Powercolor 512MB is the only one to be found in North America at the moment. But the whole point of me cheaping out to 512MB was to cut back so paying more for custom cooling contradicts that.

I'll continue to keep my eye out for reference 512MB ones I guess. At 139 there's a lot more justification for 5770.

One thing also to note on this card is the reduction in output connections. Currently, you can only run 2 display Eyefinity with this particular video card, across the HDMI and DVI ports.

Also, as a side note, ASUS is working on a refresh of models of the 5000 series, specifically 5870, 5850, and even something else. We will be looking at their new TOP and MATRIX products in this line, they will definitely have something to offer gamers and enthusiasts.

Well, the cooler looks neat.. even though most people won't see it, and if they do they'll say "why's there an upside down car in your computer?"

I guess that's about it though.

I've had this card for about 2 weeks and I can say the performance numbers match my experience, but my load temps (alt-tabbing out of a game and looking at HWMonitor or CCC) never get that high. I don't game as much as I used to so this card is okay for my needs, but if it got that hot I'd have already RMAd it. Been tempted to RMA for a Sapphire VaporX model for a couple reasons, but haven't done it yet.

Kyle, can you plz expound on this statement;

"The landscape in North America is going to be changing this year, and ASUS will be one of the card sellers left standing"

Thanks

I think its in reference to some rumors from CES about Visontek being kicked from a major US e-tailer and XFX Europe being kicked off of Nvidia's approved partners.

Since the card will be upside down in most cases, shouldn't the spoiler be oriented another way? It won't generate much down force is if it upside down.

Clearly the cooler was designed for appearance, not performance. Do we really need gimmicks like this? I'd prefer they come up with a cooler that actually delivers decent temps without sounding like a 747 and barely fits in cases.

Usually if a card runs hotter the voltage is higher,it would be good if some one could take a current draw of an Ati & Asus and if Asus is drawing more why. Has anyone done a side by side with an Ati equivalent card. I'm guessing that Asus will out perform an Ati card because of the higher current draw.

Please come up with an award for bloopers like this, like a Wooden Spoon award or something.

No no, you have it backwards. It's all of the downforce from the spoiler that allows it to remain upside down!

Thanks for the review, Brent & Matt. Seems that the 5770 is definitely the way to go in this price bracket, especially when they start hacking off display connections. Since I don't see 5850 prices coming down soon (can't bring myself to spend >$200) I was looking at biting on a 5750 or 5770 to tide me over until next year and the 5770 is winning me over atm. Just waiting to see if the 5830 is mere myth or if it will rear its head sometime soon and fit in my budget.

I noticed you've removed RE5 from your benchmark suite. Is this because of the HDR bug on AMD cards or was there another reason? Really I just wanted to know if that bug is still showing up with the latest Cat's as I'm sure performance is acceptable otherwise.

PS- Is this what you were referring to when you said ASUS is working on "something else"? Looks like an AMD flavored MARS that would throw PCIe power specs right out the window. I wonder if they are using chips with all 1600 shaders enabled...

I wonder if Kyle and the boys have any GSOD issues with all the 5k series reviews recently

This review made me wonder and obviously worry a little so I did some additional testing. Obviously since I own this card I'm clearly not a hardcore PC gamer these days, but the few games I do play I want native resolution and some AA/16xAF with full details. So I fired up HWMon 1.15 and let it run in the background while I played 30 minutes each of Torchlight, HL2:EP2, the original Assassins' Creed and WoW. My ambient room temp is 71f and my maximum GPU temp through all of that playing was 64c (stock clocks). When I get some time later I'll fire up Furmark, but it seems like your review sample might be a bad card or something else, dunno? Please don't take this as me calling any part of the review suspect, just posting my (purely anecdotal) experience.

Good review. Really this car design is funny as hell

with a few improvements we might just see this card in the next Daytona500

E-tail or retail?

I *have* noticed that Visiontek has pretty much vanished from Best Buy's B&M shelves (oddly enough, replaced by XFX).

XFX globally has a rather nasty dilemma as one of the few AIB partners for both in that nV has come up with next to nothing this past cycle, while Big Red has been KATN from high-end to budget.

nV's dilemma is that XFX still moves lots of product for them (despite any seeming disloyalty), so merely giving them a wrist-slap is all they can afford *fiscally* to do.

kind of a dead thread I know, but has anyone with this card found a after-market cooler that fits that doesn't take up 3 slots. I Figured the zalman VF950 would, but this card has a capacitor sticking up in the way. & The ARCTIC COOLING Accelero L2 Pro which claims 5750 compatibility takes up 3 slots worth of space & I would only be able to fit that into my lian-li pc-q07 if at the very least I relocated the SSD's & would probably have to cut the bottom of the case out. Also if anyone knows what the measurements for the mounting holes are that would be helpful as I think the ZEROtherm CoolMaxx 2000 may be small enough to fit & it sits high enough off the card to avoid any capacitors. Just need to find out the hole pattern on the asus card & how far away from the backplate the GPU is.
