The good news: Modern Warfare 2 made more money than any game ever. The Bad news: It was equally popular with pirates.

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said commenting on the game’s success. This is, of course, reflected in the number of pirated copies being traded on BitTorrent.

So, what you're saying is, the most popular games also experience the most pirating? Shocking!

The Sims 3 is probably the most popular PC game of the year.

Not surprising no one want to buy MW2 since they ****ed up multiplayer so badly. It's the most expensive PC game with the shortest singleplayer game out. A total ripoff.

To add to the frustration... I have never played a game with more wall hacking, aim-botting, glitching, and retarded "balance" features than MW2. In over decade and a half of gaming... I have never played a game with more cheaters.

Of course they wont do anything about it either.

Don't fool yourselves. Kotick is the type of CEo that's in for the money. He'll reap all he can and then leave Activision to go bankrupt. Socialist style. Just like GM.

Ah... the Concept of Try before you buy.. such a lovely thing.. You mean, folks may have downloaded the game, found it to killer, and then subsequently purchased it so that they could enjoy the multi-player part of it. An interesting, but impossible figure to discover, would be the percentage of those pirates (ARR..ARR) who now actually own the game.. Me wonders..

For investors and stockholders, its less about profit and more about profit margins. Kotick is intentionally running their PC market into the ground so they can argue making only console games are profitable. They'll have higher profits if they make PC games, but better profit margins if they stick to consoles.

This was their plan all along with gimping the PC version.

1.Make a horrible port to PC and gimp it every step of the way
2.Expect piracy for above reasons
3.Announce high piracy rates
4.Announce no longer making games on PC due to piracy
5.???
6.PROFIT!!!

What is sad is the majority of the world doesnt care, so its inevitable that the plan will work. I just hope other publishers dont follow suit.

Step 5 is announce higher profit margins (really announce higher profit per share) and Step 6 is announce higher bonuses for the new aristocracy, the executives! The executives only care about the shareholders to the point they can restrict or enhance their bonuses.

Every day I feel closer to seeing the end of PC gaming.

The ignorant masses seem to be in control.

i love how everyone ignores the fact that a gamr like street fighter 43, great price, incredible port of a genre abadonded by developers got pirated nearly 2 million times.

need the speed shift the pc need for speed in long time gets pirated well over 1 million.

prototype which most will say the pc version is the best verision pirated over 2 million times.

the only people running pc games into the ground are the thieves.

That sounds nothing like a socialist plot. It sounds more like Capitalism in it's truest form. Maybe you guys should realize that Activision likes money and that is why they are in business. Not the love of the game.

Though I thought the game was good albeit short and totally not worth 60 bucks, I can see where activision / Infinity Ward is coming from. They will have to do some major overhaul on their multiplayer concept to win over any real pc gamer. That was a total failure of an architecture, and it should be rectified to make this game what it should have been.

Personally, I'm a little shocked that anyone is dumb enough to believe that but to each their own I guess.

You know the pirating really makes them want to try and make a better game for PCs....

PC game pirates are some of the biggest hypocrites around usually. They complain about lackluster games for their platform, yet steal everything in sight for it, thus giving the companies no incentive to try that hard to satisfy what is these days a risky (pirates) and less popular platform.

Before you say pirates are on consoles too, realize that they cannot play online. Which equates to many still going and buying the game.

Do you realize that this is the same company that now controls the entire Warcraft, Starcraft, & Diablo franchise?

Let's wait until Diablo 3 comes out and then tell me they are running PC gaming into the ground...

You realize that most Pirated PC games can't be played online either right?

Anymore piracy is just a part of society, its sad and its stupid but if companies really want people to pay for their software they have to make a quality product people can benefit from buying. Personally I bought Cod-mw2 and its utter shit in MP. Now I also downloaded a hacked copy and will be waiting for the Hacked dedicated servers to see if its any better.

With Digital distribution going the way it is soon it will be harder to pirate a PC game then it is for a console game. Nowadays you literally download an ISO burn it and stick it in your 360 and your done. At least on a PC you sometimes have to know wtf you are doing, or at least how to clean viruses off your compy :p

oh and screw Iwnet what a piece of crap

This has largely been true for most PC games as well since they started checking CD keys online ~10 years ago (Quake3/1999). The best most could get away with would be a LAN game, or maybe something fudged together using hamachi, etc.

Diablo 3 really isn't looking that great so far and Diablo 2 is one of my all time favorite games.

It's sad that sometimes pirated/hacked/'not-as-inteneded' versions of the game are better than the original.

I was extremely disappointed when borderlands didnt work well online, and we had to use gamesradar to play multiplayer with the 4 of us that bought the pack.

When it comes to games, DD looks like an awesome business plan. The deals on steam are a steal! I almost feel bad for paying only $2.50 for a full game sometimes.

hmm so a company that basically told pc gamers to fuck off is getting a backlash? Does this actually surprise anyone?

I have no desire to play this game whatsoever, and even i have contemplated pirating it just as a middle finger to them.

60 dollars! for a gimped version of a console port. seriously, there are no extra fees to release on pc (unlike consoles), never pay 60 bucks for a pc game unless it's a collectors edition with all kinds of goodies... But seriously, the game was barely more than an expansion of the previous game, with things removed... and they wanted more for it... no

ever notice the most vocal critics of piracy are those who either released a sub-par product (original crysis) or tell pc gamers to eat a dick (mw2)

piracy is inevitable the same way that shoplifting etc is inevitable...people want shit for free and it's understandable, however a little customer service and some brains goes a long way to lowering those numbers.

oh and in short. fuck IW and CoD

Well, I decided to buy the 360 version and must say I've been having a blast with it.

I haven't pirated since i've been able to afford games. Im guessing 90% of the people growing up in my generation were the same.

Really... were those threads linked to a "comments" link on the HardOCP home page. I'm guessing not.

You know... bullshit like this that cries about re-posts is one of the main reasons I don't use these forums much anymore.

You must be boycotting the internet then, cause these guys are everywhere.

Haven't played it yet.
Not going to play it till it's $2 or something on STEAM or D2D.

Bought it for my father.

Not worth the $$, not even close. Not going to bother picking it up for myself. Actually didn't really like the game at all. I'll never get used to the Wolverine like healing abilities. Stupid game play mechanic. Or lack of save.

same, now that i can make money it's honestly easier just to buy something i want, or wait for it to be on sale somewhere, besides with shit like slickdeals, i can usually run that grey area and get something i want for damn cheap anyway.

i think someone mentioned earlier, many pirated titles end up being gimped by losing multiplayer or other features.

only things i would do is pirate out of idealogical reasons...like mw2

or alternately i'll still use fixed exe files if there is copy protection.

Yeah, I always use fixed exe. Not only to do away with pointless need to load disc, but it drastically increases load times.

And sometimes gets around the a situation where a game I fucking paid for won't run simply because I'm running daemon tools. Not shedding a tear on these piracy reports as I get raped staying legal.

Don't forget the fact that they aren't providing any form of LAN support... Big brother is watching and he sees the green in your pockets...

Every day I feel closer to seeing the end of PC gaming.

The ignorant masses seem to be in control.

If by ignorant masses you mean corporations that undiscriminatingly equate piracy with lost sales, and attempt to raise sales by adding game breaking DRM, a customer-offensive policy, while cutting back features traditionally expected by the customers, sure I agree.

If not then maybe you're a part of the demographic you condemn?

I have nothing against DRM with games, movies, music, digital content. What I do have an issue is crippling the paying enduser to detract piracy. I should be able to buy a game, install it, and play it legally without ever noticing any implementation of DRM. When I try to illegally copy, download, install, ect a game, I don't mind all the bells and whistles going off.

It makes me wonder what kind of market for 'anti-piracy' techniques exists. Do companies release exagratted piracy numbers to scare publishers into licensing over the top DRM technologies? Unfortunately there is no way to determine increased revenue from implementing DRM, or if they make money at all.

If a company pays $50,000 for DRM technology and they increase profit by $50,000 (so maybe like 5,000 sales, dont know the profit margin for PC Games), then it was worthwhile. If all they do is prevent 10,000 pirated versions with no increase in sales, than DRM was a waste of money. To many what if situations to ever know

You need to lay off the Fox News and Rush. Socialist style would have him selling the game at cost and any incidental profits equally distributed amongst himself and all Activision workers.

Your scenario is pure smash-n-grab capitalism.

It's interesting to look at the lists and see the numbers for 360 and Wii piracy, compared to PC piracy. Not this year's PC piracy of course, but last year's. I wonder what next year's lists will hold?

..but how many of the people that pirated it bought it for the MP??? See without stats on that there is no way to really know the impact. Look at Wolverine, leaked and all those downloads but then went on to do great @ theatres. I think alot of people will "try" before they buy, sure it's wrong but if they get the sale in the end....

Wait....I thought that with this new multiplayer system, that cheating/hacking/aimbotting/wallhacking, was going to be a thing of the past? You mean it doesn't work? *gasp* I feel like I was lied to...and now with no dedicated servers, mods can't even run off the llamas so the entire system is abused like a catholic altar boy at a priest convention.

Good thing I didn't buy the game. Unlike many others, my boycott is actually valid, and will be, I will not buy this game, period.
