[YourNewCase] SUGO ... 5! GO!

Hi

First time poster trying to build a core i5 SFF linux desktop for normal use and to occasionally play X-Plane (flight simulator) which at this time is CPU heavy (rather than GPU).

I have a put a list of parts together and was wondering if everything would fit inside the SG05 which btw looks pretty sweet.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=13139686

Three things I am worried about is:

1. Would the stock core i5 cooler fit with some room to spare?
2. Can I use slim DVD drives other than those from Silverstone which are $$$?
3. Is the DFI P55 board any good? There are no reviews on newegg at this time.

Please share your experience with the DFI P55 and i5 inside the SGO5.

Thanks in advance.

Your going to need a slim Power / Sata connector for that. It's the power and the data cable crunched together.

My rig shares the motherboard and cpu that you have, I'll know in a few days how the setup works out.

Cooler will fit, maybe, you can use any slim OD yo want but you need an slim SATA cable.

I hope the DFI board gets to Amazon soon (only way to buy from Ecuador), also the Silverstone 450w PSU.

But now that a 1156 board is available, we need a new heatsink, GeminII is discontinued, and a retention bracket is not available. Can anyone confirm if the GeminIIS 1156 bracket works with the GeminII? What other good options are available for the DFI Board? MeOrb?

This guy recommends a scythe shuriken low profile... not sure though. I would like to know the answer to some of these questions also. Parts are coming in and I havent order a cpu cooler yet.

Corsair H50 I guess, but I think you got to cut the case to fit depending on the video card.

Hi

I'm thinking about building a silent Core i3 system with the SG05.

This is how I think:

* Replace PSU with 150W picopsu.
* Use a passively cooled HD5750 (PowerColor Radeon HD5750 SCS3) (Doubt it'll fit)
* Im not sure about the CPU fan yet. Pherhaps I can run it passively too with just the 120mm case fan going? 32mm efficiency FTW?

What do you guys think about the passive passive HD5750? Or can I use a accellero S1 with a "normal" 5750 (heatsink only)? That would be great.

What about a passive HD 5500-5600-ish card (when whey're out)? Should consume a lot less power.

I'm not a hard core gamer, but I would like to play dragon age origins on a reasonable gfx setting.

Well, dunno why going for so much trouble.

First of i3 is not available yet, even worse in ITX format, I don't know if i3 processors will work on P55 motherboards. The SG05 PSU is not really noisy and should power any passive card you can find.

If you want to play dragon age, a Zotac 9300, any wolfdale (I'd go for e7400), paired with a GeminII passive cooler and any passive card you can find should do just fine.

It's not a noisy setup by any means, of course not totally silent either.

Well, I'd like to upgrade my current system (e2160), but I don't really need the 4 cores. At the same time I'd like a fairly small and silent system.

I guess the stock PSU is silent enough.

Here's my SG05W:

Not that thrilled with it. I like the color, but I'm not happy w/ the amount of space around the slim optical drive. I've tried this drive in the picture and a SilverStone SST-SOD01W slot-loading drive. Both have the ugly gap around them. I guess it's less noticeable w/ the black version of this case.

Also, you can see in the pic., the middle of the shell / case cover (right above the center of the slim optical drive) pops up a little bit. I've taken it off and made sure nothing inside is sticking up higher than the case cover.

Don't know why it's bending / popping up like that.

I don't see any grooves on the lip at the top of the case like my old Shuttle did. The Shuttle had a lip along the edge of the back of the front panel that the shell would kind of hook onto. This SG05 doesn't have that.

Oh dam. Probably gonna have to bend the panel then until it sits flush. Be careful when doing this though.

If I remember correctly(I'm at work now) there's 2 clip that hooks on to main body.

It's just not properly closed, press it down while putting the cover it has some clips that go under a chassis lip.

Just apply some pressure on the sides and top while sliding it in :D

Thanks guys. Problem solved. There are two clips on the case cover itself.

More pics.:

Damn, that's sexy!

One question, though...you're not having any problems with your tray-loading drive, are you?

Some reviews for this case have complained that the lray-loading mechanism often gets stuck.

I did at first. Most of the tray loading drives ppl. buy are OEM and don't come with the tiny screws needed for these drives.

At first, I had to pull really hard to get the tray to open and push really hard to close it. I took it out and found that the screws I used (got them from a slot loading drive) were too long and when screwed all the way in, were jamming up against the tray. I purchased some shorter screws and this fixed the problem. The drive works perfectly now.

Only complaint I have is that SilverStone made the opening for the optical drive too big. Every drive I've tried has a very noticeable gap around it. It's really only a problem w/ the white SG05 though since the gap isn't that noticeable w/ the black one.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. It looks much better now. :D
Yes, yes it does. ;)

Made the cut to fit a GTX260

Was just guessing on how much to cut away since I didn't have the vid card with me. Had to nibble some more out later to actually fit it.

Did you use a nibbler or dremel to cut the case?

stupid question: where did you get a white-faced slim drive. What model? After a little bit of searching, I've only been able to find black ones. By the way, great build.

It comes with the case.. Or if it's the DVD model that Silverstone sells then it comes with the drive.

SilverStone sells a white slot-load drive (just a rebranded Panasonic UJ-875A w/ white bezel), but if you want a white tray-loading drive like mine you can get a bezel from a site called Centrix International.

The bezel is a perfect match to the white SG05. It did not come with the SG05.

White bezel w/ Blu-Ray logo:

White bezel w/ just the DVD R/RW logo (like mine):

Plain white bezel:

These bezels will work with pretty much all slim tray-loading drives. I think they use a universal bezel design for these slim tray-loading drives. I have both a Lite-On and Sony Optiarc slim tray-loading drive (both from Newegg) and the bezel works with both. The drive I'm using now is a Panasonic UJ-890A.

Use a dremmel if u got one. This is actually a great mod if u have a big card like the 5850 og 4870. but not actually needed.

Annyone know of a 5850 that has 6pi going upwards instead of back?

I do have a dremel, but I'm feeling lazy and don't want to have to remove everything from the case to do the cutting.

^^ Weaksauce!

I actually did this mod in my paint booth/shower yesterday! Took a lot of hacking away and grinding since I did not have cutter discs. Used grinder instead and it worked out well.

Now the issue is to wait for the new 450 PSU to come out. I've got nothing that will fit in there so I'm using an Antec psu umbilical power cord system from the outside.

Pics up soon!

the SG06 is 1-2 cm longer than the 05? so doing tis mod on that case would give more rom for vga? would be great to fit a 5870 :D the sapphire toxic has another cooler so its probably 1-2cm shortet than the standar 5870

450W psu is needed :)

The 06's front bezel sticks out more, so it would easier fit a GTX285 than the SG05 would.

However I cut SG05 and placed a GTX280 in there and the bezel -just- is able to snap over it.

Pics up soon. :)

That's superb Zyklon, thanks for those pictures.

Do you find any adverse effects from having the card pressed up against the H5O like that? Is it a terribly tight fit?

I was pricing up a build under the assumption that i'd have to go with something like a 5770 if I wanted to get the H5O in there, but seeing this... maybe a 5870 Vapor-X would fit? As it's shorter than standard? Does the lid still fit on the case with no problems at all, given the orientation of the rad?

Tute

I find that it's that BS plastic shroud thing. I could easily sand it down if I had to. It's mostly plastic anyways.

Now look at that last shot, the 5890 card is 1 cm longer than that. At that part in the SGO6, the bezel flares out and you get that extra 1cm from case length.

It would probably be a little tight to fit, I would imagine!

I might just go with the 5850 and stop pushing my luck - I don't really want to have to cut the case itself.

Is a 5850 much better than a 5770? I thought the 58xx were longer and would require cutting of the SG05 to fit.
