What's this? Australia plans to roll out an internet filtering system to block illegal and obscene websites? Considering how well this has worked out for China all these years, this must have seemed like the logical choice for Australia too. :rolleyes:

The government said Tuesday it will introduce legislation next year for the filter system to help protect Australians, especially children, from harmful material on the Internet. Critics say it will not prevent determined users from sharing such content, and could lead to unwarranted censorship by overzealous officials.

When will any gov't in any country realize the best thing is to educate people rather than to make a decision for them.

This can be applied to just about any circumstance.

You will always have the morons who touch the stove after you tell them it is hot but this is just how nature thins out the herd.

Let the people decide what they feel is obscene. Thank the maker I don't live in Australia. (Well back to Dragon Age)
 
According to the article they will be filtering harmful content like child pornography and rape, that's a good thing. As long as they leave the regular porn sites alone I don't see a problem.

anything that winds up as refused classification=blocked.

which is quite odd as some content is perfectly fine when its in films and on newstands but as soon as it hits the net its ALL ABOUT SAVING TEH KIDZ!

unfortunately in this instance im an aussie and conroy can GGF'd. love the country love the weather love the people unless they are politicians in which case they are moneygrubbing bastards. i dont want to leave but crap like this REALLY makes me wish it were an option.....

It's horse shit, introducing censorship at any level only allows for the government to censor other things as well. It's sickening how some people are ok with giving up freedoms because it doesn't directly affect them, yet.

As someone one who works for a K12, I would appreciate this being a law, not a government hardened block filter. Sometimes the Internet filter does not pick up on newer porn sites and if something comes up, bam, you got porn on the screen rather than a simply 18 or older verification screen. Can-spam act shows that most people are willing to follow the law. I rarely get spams that do not contain opt-outs. By actually using them, I have drastically reduced my spam.

I'm just glad I live in the US where we don't, and never will, filter the Internet. You should be happy we have a liberal supreme leader ... uh, I mean president.
 
Well shit, our buddies down under just keep getting gov-owned left and right.

It's naive to think that there's a single country in the world with no censorship. Even in the US if you make questionable comments or something, you could get yourself in trouble - "bomb" in the airport, "fire" in theaters, cussing or causing profanity in a public forum. There's always going to be censorship.

Freedom of speech implies our rights to speak against our government when we don't like what they're doing. Nothing more, nothing less.

Apples and oranges, those examples are not censorship. You wouldn't be in trouble for speaking your mind or expressing yourself, you'd be in trouble for intentionally inciting a panic. People can be injured, or killed and it disrupts business. I could see someone being charged with both criminal and civil charges.

In the case of public forums, profanity at such would be a case of etiquette and would depend on the venue, but could not legally be blocked by government.

Sensoring media such as books/news/video games/movies/porn is a completely different

Tis not law as of yet. And with the current bunch in opposition, it likely wont be. They oppose everything that govt does on general principle. For once it might be a good thing!

i have to agree once the govt decides what you can and cant see it can get out of hand. i dont like child porn sites anymore then anyone else........but then whats next on the censorship list?

Why are people so naive??

Yes to get it in they say "it will protect our children!!!!" and all the stupid general population (*cough* iphone users) follow along like sheep and vote for it. Ignoring that it's not just child porn that will be blocked but anything the goverment determines is innapropriate. Without telling anyone how they chose these sites. And to top it off, it will slow down our pathetic overpriced broadband even more, because $100 a month for <10mbit/128k 20GB a month is just not bad enough :mad:
 
Sorta makes me never want to visit my family in Australia for an extended period of time.

Would they arrest you for having a game installed on your laptop that's banned in Australia? Or just shoot the thing and leave it at that?

So you really think kiddy porn is good? Rape is good? We have laws to prevent this kind of shit. The laws have not progressed to prevent good old fucking. If you really think the government are out to remove all our freedom then you can arm yourself to the teeth and hideout with all the other wackos and pretend anarchy is the solution.

What people fail to realize is that laws are steps to total control, and not just the government's existence themselves. Why start worrying now because of a piece of paper? If you're that paranoid, your worry should have began in 1776 if you're an American.

Who cares if its good or not fool. If you dont like it dont go searching for it. Its just another fool like yourself in power trying to tell others what is good and decent. In 10 years it could be anything else, games which are too violent, sites which show you how to build things because one or two articles might contain "nefarious" information.

If looking at pictures is illegal then judges and law enforcement should be jailed along with the pedos for looking at the same pictures. In fact if you were a pedo, the best job to be would be in law enforcement or as a judge, because you would have THOUSANDS of images to look at freely in your own time of the same porn you jail people for. How the hell anyone can say looking at a picture is illegal I don't know.

I've got a REAL OUT THERE IDEA, how about people get punished for actual crimes instead of bullshit precrime. It will never happen because the precrime goldrush over the last 2 decades helps the government attain more control and information about the populace. Yeah you have nothing to worry about...... as long as they don't take away your reality TV shows and microwave TV dinners you'll be ok.
 
One of their arguments is to protect the children. This is just one more instance where I read through the article and did not see a single mention of that taboo word...parenting.
 
While this is completly wrong I bet if a quik search was done half of you in this thread are all for the US furthering it involvenment in our own lives. Hey pot this is the kettle, you are black. :)
