Acer 120Hz 23.6" 1920x1080 LCD... but it's orange!

Watching 4:3 media content on a 16:9 and 16:10 screen isn't going to be very different.
Try 23.5% different! (a 4:3 box fits 1440x1080 vs 1600x1200) That affects the vast amount of 4:3 media, old games, and Nintendo emulators.

So much 16:9 bashing; what are the arguments for having 16:10 over 16:9, for a dedicated gaming & entertainment (TV, movies) monitor?
For PC monitor use, 16:10 is better in every way. When gaming, having an extra half inch on the top increases your field of view and immersiveness. For general PC use, more pixels is obviously better. 16:9 has less area per inch. Viewing PDFs on my 30" 16:10 in 2-page mode is pristine, and there's even some gray area on the left and right sides; if it were 16:9, there'd be even more gray area and each page would appear smaller.

If 16:8 came out tomorrow, it would suck even more. 1920x960.

Acer obviously didn't make the LCD screen itself - some manufacturer in China probably is pumping these out. Hence chances are we'll see several manufacturers bringing out screens using it, some of which might decide not to paint the surround orange.

Pretty sure that orange isn't going to be the only color that Acer brings out, pretty sure that's just a promo pic. But please continue discussing.

With games the vertical viewing area stays the same. No matter what your aspect ratio is, the image top and bottom are at the same positions. So with a wider screen you see more. Specifically you see more to the sides which is usually the direction you would like to see more. You don't really need to see more of the sky or the ground (except maybe flight simulators).
If the game is made poorly and you actually see less as the image gets wider, 16:9 is still better than 16:10, you just have to pivot it 90 degrees :)

Hell I'm still gaming at 4:3, 1600x1200. Havent been too crazy about widescreen gaming but I'll make the jump when I can get 120hz. I was considering getting a 1600x1080 120hz and using it dual-monitor but I'll just wait for a 1920x1080 version now.

I agree. I meant to say that more of your eye vision is taken up by the game, with an extra half inch on top.

This is a valid point since 99% of the games out there are coded this way but the ability of the 16:10 monitors to display the same maximum 16:9 resolution renders it moot. There's nothing stopping you from playing at 1080p on a 16:10 24" and leaving everything else native. It's something to consider if you're looking at the smaller screens or those fancy 2048x1152 23" screens but for 24" the choice is clear. Rather, it would be if there weren't so many cheap and/or nice 16:9's coming out but damn it I want to keep my 120 rows of pixels.

Hell I'm still gaming at 4:3, 1600x1200.

Awesome, we're like brothers. We should get some sticks and take turns beating people using three 16:9 monitors until they repent.

16:9, 16:10 I don't care.

But what does matter is that it's.... orange...

^^
This, I don't understand the debate between 16:9, 16:10. I also don't care about the color as long as it plays fast pace FPS awesomely. ;)

Great now I don't have to paint the room orange! The final design is now finished and model is GD245HQ.

I hope backlight bleeding won't be an issue, that's the only issue I have with my ViewSonic VX2268wm. At least the bezel seems very thin which I like and the stand seems reasonable high, as in higher than the ridiculously low 2233rz stand.

Well that...isnt quite as orange.

For 120hz 1080p, theres also the Asus VG242H. No word on that either. Just a few pics from Computex.

I really want to get a 120 hz monitor, but I hear the VX2268wm and 2233rz have issues with ATI cards.

I hope these new displays come soon and without any issues.

Wow that looks so much better than the old version!!! any idea on ETA? looking forward to buy one if it near!!

I don't have an issue with the 16:9 aspect ratio, I prefer it over 16:10. Of course, I don't like the decrease in resolution that follows, like 1920x1200 to 1920x1080. Can't they increase the resolution in these 16:9 panels like some monitors have from 1280x800 to 1600x900?

The new design is much better, still, all black would be perfect; black goes with everything IMO. ;)

I saw a 120hz monitor at my local MicroCenter and was totally amazed by how smooth the mouse moved on the desktop, makes my 60hz monitor looks absolutely dated. Imagine running some older games at that smoothness.

Looks like it will take quite a while for a replacement for my Hanns-G HG281D. 120hz sounds nice, but I don't want to give up my 28" monitor size, and I'm spoiled since I only paid $300 for mine, whereas these new monitors will certainly be more than that. I also hope I won't have to give up 1920x1200 for anything less.

I can personally attest to witnessing 75 hz as much smoother than 60 hz ... 120 on a computer monitor would be slick.

Meh. Say whatever you want about the color scheme or the resolution, that thing is sick!
Anyone have any idea on price?

Not a clue. With our luck probably $599.

I asked for the 2233rz for Christmas and im having second thoughts of telling them not to purchase it.

I wouldn't expect such a hefty pricetag for this monitor cuz it's:

1) Acer

2) Full HD

3) TN-panel

My guess is 349~$399 MSRP. OK that would still be relatively expensive versus other 60Hz full hd displays but reasonable priced compared to the 22" 120Hz displays. I don't have much faith in Acer (at least over here people tend to look Acer displays as cheap & crappy "office" displays) tho so have to wait some reviews for this one. At least the other 120Hz LCD monitors aren't of very good quality so I doubt Acer manages to fail more than the others (ok ViewSonic VX2268wm has nice colors for a TN panel and very low input lag & ghosting but otherwise for this pricetag it doesn't justify it and not the amount backlight bleed on my sample!).

issues with ATI cards? really?

I wanted that monitor but I have an ATI card

Damn thats near, is it worth it waiting over an IPS (Dell U2410 or NEC 23" IPS EA231WMi) panel type display??

LG is making 120hz IPS panels, but they're only used in TVs (sadly none of the current "120hz" TVs support 120hz input, only 24/60->120hz interpolation). However there's going to be a much wider 3D push once the blu-ray 3D spec is announced (presumably at CES 2010 in January) and there will probably be a lot of 3D TVs announced with 120hz input. Hopefully monitors won't be far behind.

Heck yeah you should wait!! I've been waiting for years for a monitor like this. I'm still using my Hitachi 19" CRT becuase most LEDs have sucked until recently. At $400, people cannot complain about the panel being a TN panel. I am already in cyber-line to buy one of these beasts! People who claim to not see the 120hz difference either don't use computers very often or the computer is not set up correctly. Either way they are uber noobs!

I am waiting for this monitor also. just afraid of the price when its released and lack of options for 120hz. My current monitor turns off randomly and it sure is annoying. Trying to hold out as long as possible.

1920x1200@120hz is not possible over dual-link dvi for those asking for 16x10. I might sell my 2233rz for this if the tests turn out good.

has the 2233rz been a a huge difference for gaming with the 120hz from your personal experience?

Over a 60hz LCD, hell yes. It's also the reason I finally gave up the fw900.

The problem is I have been gaming for 2 years on a 32inch LCD TV which is finally starting to die out.

I just am concerned to go down in size so much, when I am used to a 32inch display. I game quite a bit, but I also blog and read a lot online. The bigscreen is great for reading online essays and papers.

Thats why I was trying to wait for this 24inch Acer. I don't know if I can handle 22inch. Seems so small now :)

I might just go with a top of the line 26inch gaming display and just get a 120hz in like a year or so, when more sizes are available.

Just don't know if i should go for the 2233rz for the 120hz and just have smaller size display or go for a 2inch and get the 120hz in a year or so down the road when they will probably have 24 or 26inch 120hz..

If you can't wait for this acer I say get the 2233rz now and upgrade later becaus there is no 26" LCD top of the line gaming display imo.

Just pulled the trigger on a 2233rz. If its not superb, i am coming for you! ;)

It's superb to me because it was the closest lcd to a CRT in smoothness and speed. I don't do color work on my pc and I watch movies on pioneer kuro so tn doesn't bother me enought to settle for 60hz. If you are not as fickle then maybe the higher end larger 60hz lcds might be better for you. Please don't hold me responsible if it doesn't look good enough, this monitor is meant for speed not looks.

I know. I think I will like it.

EDIT: that pre order is around 485 dollars.
