Just talked with a Kingston rep. This also includes the new 40Gb models with intel controllers I ordered one two weeks ago and it never came. Found out why.

They didn't say. I was just trying to get to the bottom of why I never got my 40gb Kingston Intel.

He probably just meant that they're having supply issues - I imagine the 40-gigers are selling fairly well.

Maybe the rep was talking about phasing out the older V series drives that are based on the crap JMicron controller?

I aksed her, and she said the entire V series, new 40gb included. She said that is why availabiity is low to none.

And how much do you think regular reps know? I mean, she ain't no management or she might have misunderstood something. I seriously doubt that 40gb ones are discontinued.

All I know is I got fed up with terrible availability from Intel and went with OCZ.

This move only shows there are serious supply and demand issues, maybe Kingston doesn't want to deal with Intel as a business partner like this right now.

My OCZSSD2-1VTX250G 250gb failed, was working when I left work, over 3 day holiday for thanksgiving, came in and the PC was at 'insert boot device'
drive wasnt detected in bios on any of 5 machines I tried it in, just died for some reason.
lease my g1 Intel 160gb is still going strong

I just had a Samsung 64GB do the same thing.
Wasnt even a month old.

Just spoke with them again, this time a diff rep. This rep said only the 40gb is being phased out, not the rest of the V-series. I don't know who to believe but this guy sounded fairly knowledgable.

They probably decided that the licensing costs that they have to pay to Intel aren't worth it.

Doesn't make any sense. They still are paying for the normal Intel 80GB/160GB drives, so dropping the 40GB would have little on their licensing costs. Furthermore, the 40GB just got released. They invested a ton of money in product preparation and distribution to discontinue it two weeks after its released? No way. Plus, they've already sold a bunch of the drives so they still need to support them. And why would they abandon something that has already been a very solid selling product? Doesn't make any sense.

Call them and ask them yourself. My credit from Compsource today also indicated that the 40 gig was discontinued.

yea, wouldn't really make much sense to pull a product that's been getting rave reviews recently

on a separate note, i got my email confirmation for the rebate on my 40gb drive a few days ago...

Doesnt matter if the reviews are good, if the margins arent there.

That said, I just ordered one from Newegg for $130.

I am not joking when I tell you that I spoke with a Kingston rep today who said:

1. 40gb discontinued
2. Newegg is not getting any shipment

Yet Newegg's ETA od 12/03/09 and 12/04/09 was correct. They do now have them in stock!

What is going on at Kingston?

the absolute cheapest price i found is 118.99 + tax + free shipping form buy.com through amazon right now... (total is $131 after tax for me) and it's in stock

$130 at newegg with no free shipping comes out to almost $148 for me (with 9.75% tax)

makmatsu - Thx. I saw that Buy.com price but went with Newegg because I was sickened by my other recent attempt to but a Kingston 40gb from a lesser known store. Also, I don't have tax with Newegg, so the price was $135 with shipping included. Plus they had the kit, not just the drive. I know I will get the item fairly quickly too. I don't mind paying the extra $15 at all.
