This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, the CEO of a major network wants file sharers to have their internet connections cut off (repeat offenders).

The CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment says the U.S. should join France in cutting off the Internet connection of users who repeatedly download copyright-protected films. Jim Gianopulos says punishing repeat offenders would help create "a level playing field" for filmmakers.

some people are so out of touch with reality..... Yeh... im 100% certain this will solve the problem.

like the war on drugs

It may not curb piracy but you have to admit it's a hell of a deterrent. Most people only have access to one high speed providers and aren't willing to risk it.

i have access to 5+ wireless networks at any time. as long as you are not in a rural area it is quite easy to get online

Sounds like trying to take away the license of someone with too many DUIs. They always manage to get back out there.

OH HAI TOR good luck all itll do is drive it back underground

"Level the playing field"?! I didn't know we could shut down the film makers who make shitty movies?! :)

As far as I was aware DOWNLOADING copyright material wasnt illegal, but SHARING it was?

Or am i just as confused over this grey area as the next pirate?

i wonder how many people watch fox shows on there site and i wonder how much they make of the adds on it, its like shooting your self in your foot when you think about. i can dvr a show on tv and watch it when i what i pay for the cable si i can watch it, so why the hell cant i dl that show if i what to? and if the show is really good im buy the dvd set of it like i did whit BSG. they wony be happy till 50% of us are off teh net and they look and see that there making less money because people or not buying there stuff because most of it sucks and the only way to tell if its good is to listen to more then the 10 sec clip they let you hear

Sorry, but for some reason I have the built-in internal programming that says "Do the exact opposite of what ever France does." Must be the German in me....;)

"How to crack my neighbors WEP encrypted wireless router" becomes the number 1 search on google in 3...2...1... after this law passes.

You can not attempt to control a resource without scarcity, you can only charge a convience fee. Get it through your heads.

of course, this makes perfect sense.

Somebody gets shot. BAN GUNS

Somebody gets stabbed. BAN KNIVES

Somebody makes meth. BAN SUDAFED

Somebody gets high. BAN MARIJUANA

A little kid brings a fork to school. EXPEL HIM

Somebody dies from lung cancer due to cigarette smoking. BAN CIGARETTES (oh... wait.... maybe not)

Somebody dies from liver failure due to alcohol abuse. BAN ALCOHOL (oh.... wait..... maybe not)

Somebody steals a screener copy of a movie from the studio and it eventually gets posted to a topsite. BAN THE INTERNET

WTF

that would be like taking away driver's licenses from idiots.

not going to happen.

too many idiots!

They'll never ban cigarettes or Alcohol, they generate too much tax revenue. They government wouldn't like the pay cut.

As for marijuana, they keeps talking about legalizing & taxing it out here in California (more revenue). How do you tax something that is basically a weed that will grow almost anywhere, including most peoples back yards?

More likely just basic common sence...

Stupid is what Stupid does, Ja?

Cable tv want this in general so people would watch tv more. The internet is taking over. Its inevitable.

This is a Red Herring, its not about Fox its about the owner of Fox, Rupert Murdock, thats what this story is all about. Prime example of what happens when you own a global media company. Use your companies to advance your goals and stay out of the lime light.

Food grows in back yards too... How many people do you know who live off a garden?

Forgot to mention, this is why Individuals in power fear these guys. They can either make you look good or make you look bad, because they own the cable networks, radio stations, and the print.

Or hacking a neighbors router and using their connection, and then having two old people denied internet access because they don't understand the internet and how it's a series of tubes.

Not to mention how some assholes out there could screw with people by denying them internet, by just downloading stuff off the net when they aren't around.

If anything, we should look at how the French people are extremely against this, instead of the government. What it shows is that it's bad idea and does nothing to serve the interest of the people. Just more big brother breathing down your neck.

I say we should cut off Jim Gianopulos balls off. I'm sure some other country does it when they find someone stupid. If it deters stupidity then why not? Just think how much better the world would be if someone came up with a stupid idea and we threaten to snip their balls?

My twisted idea isn't any different or radical then what Jim is suggesting.

Pretty sure everything we do now is illegal, including breathing.

It is MUCH worse if you remove or attempt to remove DRM from music you legally purchased than if were to shoplift or download music.

How it should go:

Fox CEO: HAI ISP'S, CUT OFF TEH INTERNETS FROM YOUR SUBSCRIBERS!
ISP's: Excuse us?
Fox CEO: YUO HEARDED ME!
ISP: You...want us...to cut internet connections, to our customers.
Fox CEO: YES.
ISP: Our paying customers.
Fox CEO: YES
ISP: Our paying customers that give us money in which we profit greatly from.
Fox CEO: YES!
ISP: ......we'll do that the same day you go commercial-free. Thanks.

The tech needed to see if you're downloading a movie seems really complicated. So each packet going to your home would have to be compared to previous packets and if they form an image that matches a movie they nail you.

Seems like cost of a server doing this check is going to be really high.

there is no practical way to trace the traffic.

they will only be able to target specific users who are using a lot of bandwidth on certain ports, I assume

I thought everyone hated France.... :D

I love the french they still protest passionately and violently, last good protests we had was during the Vietnam war and guess what, the protests worked, now a days we just roll over and play our favorite games on the internet and hope that all this stuff that we don't like will just go away like a bad dream. Maybe thats why they protest, drunk on cheap watka:D

Sorry, but if these people were smart they would see this as a method of marketing considering the vast amounts of money being shelled out to shitty movie makers for shitty movies. Oh yes, I'm definitely in the wrong business. I'd rather pitch a movie about zombies or vampires from a giant conference table and have an executive producer say, "Oh yeah, that sounds awesome. Here's $40 million"

Happens all the time. Don't believe me, go look at the average cost of what it takes to make even some of the lowest rated movies.
