Just bought a Seagate 7200.11, should I be worried?

Just found out about the firmware shitstorm earlier this year, it has been fixed now, right?

I normally buy WD Caviar drives but there was a deal on the Barracuda 1.5TB 7200.11 that was too good to pass up.
 
I have had and still have great luck with Seagates, including .11 and .12s.

Last I looked the latest firmware was SN6, but that was a couple months ago.
 
If you're really worried check the firmware and if it's not the most recent, update it, that is, before loading it with any data or an OS etc.. that way you have peace of mind in your purchase.

It is unlikely that what you received is any lower FW than the 'fixed' version as these drives were basically on fire-sale because of that issue, since the fix, the price came right back up to where it was before the firmware issue was discovered.

The issues that were most held against these drives is their problems with RAID setups, and it sounds like you only bought the one drive, so I'd say you're safe either way, but again, grab some peace of mind by updating the firmware if it isn't the latest.
 
I bought one in January and just got it into use. I'm having some really weird errors regarding unwritten NTFS logs. This (ST31500341AS + SD17) is one of the affected drives listed in links below. The seagate firmware-finding tool tells me that there is no firmware update available for *my* drive, but another page does list the page and link to the SD1B firmware.

The thing is... I have no idea whether this problem (NTFS log) is even related to the firmware, or if I'm showing any symptoms, or whether it's better to wait until I see symptoms to update. I used an older partition magic (9?) to partition and format it, but upon reboot, PM noted a serious error and refused to touch it.

Its the luck of the draw. I have a 1.5TB 7200.11 which didn't behave nicely earlier but has been working for ~6mo now in WHS. But I do think Seagate's QC has gone down and I no longer buy their drives.
 
i have 3 of them myself and they all work perfectly to spec, my understanding was its solved
 
i currently have five 1.5tb 7200.11 drives in my WHS server and no problems so far. 4/5 of them had the firmware bug but that flaw was fixed months ago. and even then, i think it was only a major problem if you ran them in RAID configurations?
