Dragon Age Origins discussion...

heal if <50 is much better.... maybe its just me, but some mobs do hit for 50%+ of warrior HP on a crit...

Very true, and it really depends on how "tank like" the character is.

For Shale I have it at <25% and I've yet to lose him.

For Leliana I've got it at <50%, and I've still lost her now and then to a ranged enemy who got lucky.

It's a small thing, but it makes a huge difference later on the game when there are tons of enemies and Wynne just can't keep up with it all.

Trying to decide where to go now that I've done the Mages Circle section. Might head for the dwaves next for a change of pace and do elves last this time.

If you've got Wynne in your party, and if you happen to be a healer mage yourself, then as far as I can tell the game is pretty much cake. It surprises me that anybody would say the default level is too difficult. It must be the console people who are trying to play DA as though it's an action RPG? I guess they think it's like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or something. It's weird.

The basic consensus is that 3 mages + tank will pretty much rape the game. You'll have one mage healing the tank, and the other 2 dishing out damage.

I'll admit I'm enjoying the game. I'm really enjoying the modability of it as well (not that I'm much of a modder). If anything, everybody should get the mods that increase the available tactics to 25, whiten the teeth, the DEX hotfix, and maybe some nice items (the nude mods are already out).

my tank cant seem to hold aggro, even though his first command is to taunt enemy always comes to me.
So I had enough and switched to EASY. I'm having more fun playing than on "NORMAL". Normal should be renamed to HARD. Really the outcome of each battle is decided on a razor thin margin, it takes the fun away from the game, becomes more like.. OOPS you forgot to take the health potion 0.202002 milliseconds before getting gang clobbered, too computational for my liking. I liked Risen and Witcher's combat system more, they were more organic and analogous, this combat system reminds me of a pre-programmed chess game, set your programmed pieces, and watch them fight, if one is not programmed right, you're f*cked.

Stop letting your people die, Normal really isn't that bad. Also sometimes you need to pause and tell your guys what to do.

Your two counter examples were games known for their flawed combat systems o.0?

not flawed... Risen's combat was enjoyable, I hated Gothic 3's combat though. Witcher's and Risen was lots of fun because you could pull off combos just by clicking, but you're also free to run around to your liking if you aggroed the wrong mob. Dragon Age is less forgiving. Open a door and out comes pouring a mob, move a little bit down the hall, you trigger another scripted mob rush. It's a little more relentless and unforgiving and forces you to fight when you try to be cautious, reminds me of instances in WoW, when you had a noob in the team that would aggro huge mobs, Dragon age is like a huge instance where you have to keep dying until you learn what enemies spawn where and continually change your tactics after re-loading a save. Easy mode plays alot more like Diablo, it's not technically "easier" but it plays differently as in less hair-pulling micromanagement and more game enjoyment.

My helmet is disappearing during cut scenes. Is this a bug or intentional? I hope it's not intentional because it's silly that something would appear then disappear like that.

That's intentional. It's a good thing.

Agreed, however after a few hours of Easy I realized what a bore the game was. I upped to Normal and am enjoying a completely different game.

$39.99 @ Amazon right now, I'm finding it very hard to resist. With Assassin's Creed 2, God of War Collection and MW2 already pre-ordered I'm going to have my hands full though. :(

Well I was playing Risen + ordered Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls and Dragon Age and am finding time :D

How is it a good thing?

I'd wager most people would rather see the face of those who are talking then just looking at static helmet. Not to mention some dialogue scenes might come across as hokey with helms on.

And lets face it....DA:O really doesn't have that many great looking helms (mage coneheads ftl).

Should I make Morrigan's second specialization spirit healer? I just gave her the heal skill and it works well enough. I have her set up mostly so she does damage but my other members are having a hard time keeping alive lately. I have her cast cold spells and waking nightmare most of the time. This seems to help out quite a bit.

Me (2 Hander)
Shale (off tank/dps)
Allistair (tank)

If Morrigan is going to be your only mage in the group then I'd suggest it. If only for the group heal and resurrecting. If you haven't done the Circle of Mages quest yet I suggest you do it ASAP. But either way there are addons and console commands to reset talent points if you don't find it too much of a cheat.

Well I think I killed that old hag that was the healer :D

But where is the unlock for the spec?

I believe it can be bought in book form but I cannot remember where I purchased it. Don't worry I killed her too and still beat the game with Morrigan doing frost CC while casting heals. :D

I guess I just have a different perspective on it. I don't think 'what looks cool', I think "if I were a fighter, what would protect me the best". I don't get how some people want to equip a helmet but don't want it to show. Maybe I'm just old fashion.

I think you can buy the book from Levi Dryden if you have the Warden's Keep DLC. The good thing about the game is that whatever specializations you unlock the first time around carries over to all subsequent characters you create, so you don't have to go hunting for them anymore.

call me a whiner but my crew looks like a bunch of rag tag harry potter mages with cone-head hats, only when i transformed into a golem and fire-zombie was I really happy during that one dream quest.
I wish there were more characters to pick from and more items. I've been wearing the same equipment for 8 levels now.

I'm loving the dialogue in this game though... "ENCHANTMENT?!" cracks me up every time.

My guys look pretty cool.

This game is pretty good but there's way to much hand holding for me. I want to be thrown out into the wilderness with a sword and told to find my own way.

I feel the exact opposite, theres very little in the way of tutorials for any of the in depth systems for the game. You have to chose to read through the codex to pick up on a lot of the content in the game, for example I went back to the magi tower today and found 2 more sub quests there (after finishing the main one) that was from books laying around which give you codex entries and you have to work everything out from the text there.

Anyway 37.3 Hours in now and thats 4 sittings the first 3 were approx 10 hours a piece, once I pick up the game I cant put it down so I've left playing to the weekends where I can get a satisfied amount of gametime.

PROTIP - today i found out if you hold tab it highlights the names of all the interactive objects on the screen, maybe theres a tutorial for this and I missed it but it helps out a LOT in places like the magi tower where theres loads of notes and books amongst the liabry.

Yah I need to sit down and read through the codex lol.... Gonna be reading a novel.

Thanks man, was wondering if there was something for that.

yea there's a bunch of random "mini quests" everywhere, heck, I found a "painted box" on a dead body, and in this one down you can fob a door and "hand over the painted box" and you get 3 gold + complete quest, how random is that?

This game has no hand-holding. You are thrown in and left to figure out the combat tactics yourself, which could be tedious at times.

Yeah it was at the very beginning for me :D

I've been using the tab function since zero hour. It's an old BG function and that alone gives me everything I need to succeed.

Anyways, I have a question. I'm on the PC version and for some reason when attacking single enemies, if I click the monster to attack, sometimes my party will attack it once and then just stop. I click them to attack it again, they will attack once then stop. It happened on the Ogre in the first tower. What's going on?

If a party member is not selected, he or she will default to using whatever tactics you have set up.

You need something like in the very last tactic to be something like
Enemy: nearest - Attack
Or Enemy: lowest health, enemy: target of the selected character, etc. Something that gives them a default attack command.

Unfortunately, you can only queue up commands for 1 round before it defaults to tactics. I miss that about other games that let you queue up 5 rounds.

Have I been playing too much Left 4 Dead this weekend. I'm reading this thread as though you people have scribbled these messages on the wall. You're all infected!

Wait, I thought this game was holding your hand and you haven't set your tactics up yet? Well guess you've been playing easy mode. Which is fine and all; but, to complain about it hand holding you is an unfair criticism when you're not even playing the game at a level that suggests you've grasped the mechanics and nuances of it yet.

Sorry if I'm jumping to conclusions, it's just I find it a strange criticism.
