I haven't posted on here in a while but I had to after just playing Modern Warfare 2. I was in the Marines for 5 years and have been to Iraq three times and I have never felt the way I just did while playing the first mission in this game. This has to be the most realistic video game I have ever played. Infinity Ward has really accomplished something this year and have done something great for gaming as well. Any Thoughts?

Yeah they accomplished killing the pc version.

But keep us updated on the singleplayer experience!

Been deployed to Iraq, and now going to Afghan starting out 29 stumps work up early Jan. Did go, and going again as a Combat Engineer with 3/1. Right up front, even ahead of the grunts.. sweeping for things that go boom.

The game does nail a lot, and is decently realistic. The commands, voices, weapons, fireteam movements etc are all pretty accurate. Not all things are, it wouldnt be fun if they were. It has a good mixture. And yes, it does make you feel a way people who havent gone, would understand. Its intense, and about as "real" as someone is going to see who hasnt been. On the movie side, I thought "The Kingdom" did this as well. Very intense.

BTW, happy 234th Birthday today to the Marine Corps!

We get it...really....everyone knows....just let it go and move the fuck on already

Anyways, I play xbox live with a guy who lost his leg in Iraq. He says the game is pretty close to everything he experienced while deployed. While no video game compares to war, it is nice to see them focus on getting it as close to right as possible

I have to say that the comments by clevarias and fallguy are by far the best endorsements any FPS game ever could hope to achieve. You guys make all those complaining about MW2 sound like a bunch of whining bitches. :p

Thanks for your service guys, and be safe on your redeployment, fallguy!!!

EDIT: You oughtta take a look at that Modern Warfare 3 thread. You'll get a bigger laugh out of it than most!

Were you able to lean when you were deployed over there lol?

I remember an interview with an IW dev a while ago, saying they got pretty much the same reaction when they showed CoD to some WW2 vets.

Anyone in this thread who says they are in the military is lying. All you guys did was lob grenades at each other until you got 25 kills and hit them with a tactical nuke?

LMAO....

To be fair, re-read the OP's post. He only mentions the Single Player Campaign, specifically the first mission.

Everyone already knows multiplayer is about as far from the real thing as possible. Combat would probably cease to exist in the real world if everyone had to listen to screaming 12 year old children yell orders and spew racial slurs like you do on XBOX live.

Why all the negative comments fellas? Some of you must just get off on doing this, Momma must be proud!

I wish I could call airstrikes and heli strikes every 3minutes like in COD4 :(

I don't get this. I respect you guys a lot (assuming you actually are in the military; on here you can never know ;)) but from what I've seen/learned, modern combat is largely done from ridiculous distances and lasts forever while you trade endless potshots, just hoping to hit someone or scare them off...If you can even see them at all. I know there are exceptions, but really, how many times have you seen the face of someone you shot at?

Potshots? These soldiers are trained to shoot long distances effectively. All of them, especially experienced veterans should be able to hit a target up to 300m rather efficiently. A moving target at 300m or greater, now that takes skill..

I'm pretty sure it's been found time and again that most firefights occur under 300m. Not sure about Afghanistan though.

I must say I'm surprise:confused:

I haven't played MW2, but for the previous titles like MW, it feels like a run and gun game to me, with endless supply of team mates. Realism is the last thing I expect from CoD

I'm very, very surprised

I am no longer in the military but serve alongside them as a contractor, currently on Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

Most of the combat in Iraq is over with, but while it lasted it was mostly block to block, house to house. Read a few of the books that are out there about the combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and you will understand just how in the face the combat was. Check out Lone Survivor, an excellent book. Anything on the battle of Fallujah would be good as well.

You can bet that the attack on the Afghanistan base that breached the fence was up front and in there face.

I just wish they would say "Oscar Mike" a little less. Seems like the first scene had them saying that ever 3 seconds or so. I was never in the middle-east, but I was in the army for almost 4 years back in the early 90's and we never said that at all. About the only thing we ever said as often as "Oscar Mike" is said in that scene was "Over".

The military trains the lowliest private to be able to hit a non-moving man-sized target at 300 yards at least one time in three using iron sights (on average, some privates are more like 1 in 10 at that range, while others are 9 out of 10.)

Guess how many are trained to use iron sights to hit a grapefruit sized target that is popping up and down randomly from behind a wall at 300 yards... Only those that have been to sniper school, and they aren't using iron sights anyway, they are using a scope.

So basically at 300 yards it is like 98% potshots.

It's unnecessary to shit on this persons thread with nerd rage, seeing it makes me tired of visiting these forums lately.

I was in the Marines and then did some contracting with the Army over there too.

It really depends on who you're with and when.

When I was running convoys with the regular army it was return fire if you could verify and haul balls away. Of course ROE and SOPs changed quite often. The obvious difference between real life and COD MW2 is the variables that exist in real life. If you kicked in 20 doors and no one shot at you then you went home it would be a pretty damn boring first mission on MW2, I'd be happy with that in real life. I thought it was all really cool until the first time I got woken up in the middle of the night.

Also a lot of just hanging out then BOOM followed by a few tense moments then nothing for a day or two. It really depends where you're at. Some of us were up close and personal on a regular basis. Some people went over and stayed on BAF or Kabul and never heard a shot fired with the intent to kill.

For example where I was at we mostly just took rocket and mortar fire. 98% of my "fighting" was getting woken up at 3am because something blew up. Going to a bunker and getting anywhere between 0 and a shitload (rarely) of rockets. Out of I have no idea how many rockets we took in one year we had 3 wounded. Pretty good, for some reason they can't aim and luck is rarely on their side.
I don't understand how they can hit to the left, right, front and behind us but somehow not hit us.

Oh and we could lean.

That's why I said 'experienced veterans.' If were talking about your regular army buck private that just got off the cherry boat, then yes, they are most likely marksman at best. Most regular army vets that are spec./corporals and above should have their EIB and should be highly effective at 300 yards...that would be your standard pop up sillhouette target however. Some shots might just be fired at the general location however to set up another team's assault or establish fire superiority. Obviously these guys aren't out there to waste 98% of their ammo, but I suppose all this depends on their unit and how they train their men.

I trained in the Marines (happy birthday btw) and we practice out to 500meters. I worked more with the Army though and spent a lot more time with them deployed. Outside the SOF guys I'd say their shooting isn't that spectacular. It blows away the other side but it's not that great.

This is just a guess but based on the amount of rounds fired to bad guys deaded where I was at then they are hitting no where near 2% of their targets.

Now if you're room clearing you're probably going to be way higher than that.

If you're across a field trading fire while you're waiting for CAS or something along those lines then you're wasting tons and tons of ammo. It's really situational but I'd bet you the number of hits to shots fired for the average grunt is way below 2%

All of my experience is over in Afghanistan not Iraq though.

Just jumping in to say thank you guys (and gals), to any active or vets. Its a shame most people seem to forget or push to the back of their minds what you have all done for us (and for the world) and are still currently doing. I have not been in the military but I have nothing but respect for those that are. Kills me to see vets trying to collect donations and people just look and walk by. Dangerfield had it right " No respect"

As for this thread, happy it was started. been curious how military people feel about games like this. To us, its fun and just a game, whereas for you, this is life.

Marines are trained to shoot at 500 yards, with iron sights. Every single one of us. You have to pass, or you dont graduate boot camp.

In fact, I get (have) to go to Quantico for a week at the rifle range at the end of this month. Nice and cold... makes for better shooting, not.

i could not agree more. this could be said in several threads right now. the gaming forum is a cesspool right now.

I just wanted to remind all of you who have posted here that I was specifically mentioning the first mission in MW2. Where you start by showing some Afghani soldiers some weapons and demonstrating them by firing them down range at some targets. Then shit hits the fan and you rush off in some humvees and make your way to a bridge over a river or wadi or something. Then you proceed to fire tons of rounds across this gap of probably 200 yds until you see no more muzzle flashes. You proceed across the bridge and into the town, where you can see harmless civilians running around the sides of your vehicle. You are then told that you cannot fire unless fired upon, leaving you to spot three guys dressed in black standing on a high balcony ahead of you with no sign of weapons. You turn the corner and then it goes nuts..... Yeah, so pretty realistic huh? If you have been there you understand. That's all my main post was about. Happy Veterans Day!

Did anyone hear that $1,000,000 of Modern Warfare 2's profits will go to an organization that helps veterans young and old transition into civilian life?

Go ahead trash some more. I gave you some more ammo...

Anyone in this thread who says they are in the military is lying. All you guys did was lob grenades at each other until you got 25 kills and hit them with a tactical nuke?

I cannot believe the sheer ignorance, and stupid jokes in this thread. You are seriously a piece of shit.

Thank you gentlemen for service to this great country. Greatly appreciated, but wish you would all come home from the Middle East, that place is not worth fighting for in my opinion.

The Soviet Union went in for 10 years and left not really accomplishing much at the end of the day. I just don't understand why we are still there 8 years later, doing what ? Fighting the Terrorists so they don't attack the U.S. again. yeah ok...The real bad guys are in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, but both are our "so called" Allies

Yeah this game is realistic alright. It's so realistic I can survive 5 bullets in the chest and hide by the corner and regenerate *rolls eyes*.

Wow this game is so realistic I get to die and come back from the dead and do it over again just like real life! Yay!

Man the game is so realistic all I have to do is use my crosshairs and kill 30 terrorists without losing a beat just like real life.

It's so realistic I can almost smell the stench of death and feel the Iraqi heat on my heavy uniform and when the place is full of smoke its so realistic I can almost feel myself choking in my chair. The smoke was so strong it engulfed the entire room I hit my head on the monitor. *rolls eyes*

Yeah ITS SOOO REALISTIC.

I was in the Marine Corps for 4 years and did the Iraq thing 2 times,

I won't be buying this game but i do plan to play the single player campaign so i will let you guys know what my take is probably in the next few days.
