Heroes of Newerth beta

Does this game have a tutorial? I've never played DoTA

Only tutorial is playing and getting yelled at by your "experienced" teammates.

Sadly this is true. Having never played DotA, I had to kind of throw myself into the deep end. There are some good guides on the HoN forums though, for basic strategy, laning, last-hitting/denying etc. The hero guides are also good once you find a few that you like. They tell you what talent order to go for, and what items to start with and work towards. Join games that say noobs only, but still be prepared to be yelled at, and possibly kicked by tools.

This game is actually more newbie friendly than DOTA. Before I played a single game of online DOTA, I played vs AI bots for a good 2 weeks.

In HoN, there are a lot of "noobs only" games. For the most part, you don't get yelled at in those games. They also have a suggested items shop. You can also buy the individual components to the higher tier items from the shop that sells the higher tier items.

Once you get in 1550,1600+ games things get ALOT better. More teamwork, more communication, less statswhole assholes.

I always pub, I don't know anyone in-game and I'd say over 10 game there 1 or 2 where I can say I get annoyed at people.
Also, now you can play on US only server so it blocks out alot of annoying brazilian.

And lastly, the game is very well balanced. Whoever says there are op heroes doesn't know how to play (that's fine, I thought that too when I started)

Each hero have their own strenght and weaknesses you just have to adapt and pick counter-heroes.

Heh, I'm the 1650-1750 bracket, and I'd say you get more statswhore assholes than you would at lower levels. People tend to give up much faster, and people bicker much more at that level. Also, you tend to be playing against groups of 5 friends doing pubstomps.

Yeah I got up to the 1700 bracket and then started playing with some friends and that dropped my rating. I hate pubstomps, but there is nothing that beats the satisfaction of beating a group of friends when you have less than 20% chance of winning.

What do they bicker about? Unless you constantly group with friends/decent players it'll probably take a newer player a pretty long time to reach the 1700s playing random games. I should hope the players in this bracket have their stuff together.

I never played Dota and I'm only 1550 psr in HoN (played about 150 games total) and I wish people would concede faster in the 1400-1600 range. Nothing is worse than going into an AB public game and getting the crappy end of the stick with players. Total disorganization and feeders on 1 team and magically 5 coordinated pubstompers on the other.

Waiting 40min to concede seems a bit silly when you're down a ton of towers and the other team is winning 38-9 or something in kills and your carry is 2-14 with no farm at all.

Overall I like this game a lot. Haven't really played a game for longer than a week in a long time. So far out of the 150ish games I've played I learned how to play about 8 heroes at a reasonable level (mix of different hero roles to always make sure I can help the team win). There's still 40 heroes that need to be learned, and about 30 of them I haven't even played.

The learning curve is steep which is why I think the game is so good. You have to really learn a ton of stuff to become "good good" and general player skill is heavily rewarded and amplified if you have a group of friends who are on the same page as you.

Player/Team skill is so huge that it becomes pretty much impossible to lose if you're more experienced than a worse team. This can be difficult when learning (if you're vs pubstompers) but it's not too tough to choose what type of games you join. Simply look at the stats of everyone in your game. If you end up with 3 feeders on your team after an AB simply disconnect and find a new game.

I'm not even remotely bored yet of the 5v5 map but I do hope in the future they release more maps. The replay ability of this game as is is pretty huge, I couldn't even imagine how crazy it would be if they had 5-6 balanced 5v5 maps.

Gotta watch out for some of those "noobs" games because sometimes they're experienced players/friends looking for a pubstomp or you get people joining that are looking to stat whore.

they took out the test map a few patches ago

i dont have the desire to play anymore. that map was the best map.

yes, the single lane map
