Dragon Age Origins discussion...

I'm stuck without healer... Got a dragon down to about 10% of health with a thief + alistair + me dual wielding swords + morrigan...

What a pain, he keeps killing me >.<

The dragon in the werewolf den? I had so much trouble with him (Me as rogue, Alistair, Sten, Morrigan). Took a good 15 tries on normal before I managed, and that was with Morrigan only using Heal/Winters Grasp and everyone else using potions as soon as their cooldowns were up.

Does anyone know how many characters there are total in the game? I'm considering rerolling a mage, because I really don't like how Morrigan is specced when you get her and don't know when the next mage will appear.

I'm not there yet, but my friend told me: (spoiler, look below)

that there is another mage in the mage tower? when you are doing the treaties thing

Man I'm having fun with this game!

Just finished the Redcliffe section and really enjoyed the story and opportunity to make decisions that really influence the story.

On a slightly different note, it's really difficult to play a 'good' character and get in Morrigan's good graces. Maybe I'll just settle for Liliana instead...

Damn the mage circle tower took a little over 5hrs hehe.

Impulse updated the game so I got all my DLC

Impulse here too. I just manually started the updater, never had problems there... I was too busy with problems registering my key at first. Social site was messed up the registration.

Does sword swinging speed increase as you gain levels? That two handler is a slow swing.

This is one area that the game is weak, in my opinion. A lot of the hard numbers in certain areas (spell damage, attack speeds, etc) aren't shown. This really bothers me when playing my rogue. I'm still not sure if he should be using swords for bigger backstabs or staying with daggers for armor penetration.

Yep, that dragon. Still can't kill him.

I decided to leave that area for now and go do other stuff.

Text size is terribly small, they really need to add a font scaling option. Doubly so since they put much of the codex text over solid colored backgrounds, making it even harder to read!

Me too! Just finished Redcliffe. DON'T KILL MY BABY I'M BEGGING YOU!

I actually have the opposite problem you have, trying to keep Leliana with the part at all. I am lucky to be making choices that make Sten and Morrigan happy pretty much all the time.

If you're a warrior use swords and if you're a rogue use daggers. Daggers = Dex, Swords = Str.

What if you are a magician? Is it only spells then :p. Must say this game terrifies me having no previous experience with baldurs gate or neverwinter nights. How about The Witcher if I finish that one will I be more proficient in Dragon age :p.

Easy is an option but people say it´s a pushover... But perhaps not for me lol

I am still waiting for it. I preordered via play.com but they refuse to send it? It still say packing since three days so I can´t even cancel it :(

I also ordered the strategy guide but have hard time finding it in stock.

The best way to get good at a game like this is to play it. Just keep trying even if you have to reload 100 times, eventually it will come to you. ;)

So you know the large city in the upper right? (I forget the name...) Well as you are traveling there you get attacked by about 20 Darkspawn, all of which are using ranged weapons. And then there are 2 Shreiks(something like that) that are running meleeing. Seriously, OMG this is the hardest time I've ever had in the game. I just left and went to Radcliffe. So for the people who have beaten this part, what level were your guys? Mine are around 9-10 and FML...

BioWare didn't make the Witcher so DAO has nothing to do with it. You're getting all worked up over nothing. Just play and don't sweat it. The game's not that hard, enjoy yourself. If it's too tough and you start to think you don't have your gear right, just lower the difficulty and change it up as you go.

Hmmm, I have been using a sword in main hand and dagger in offhand. I might have to try out double daggers and give Allistar my "Oathkeeper".

Either the description is wrong or its bugged. Seems that my dagger damage doesn't go up with dex but with strength.

Are you just making this up? Look at the mouseover description for strength, thats a damage stat for rogues too.

Interesting, I ordered from Play.com 3 days ago (Tues) and they quoted 3-5 days for delivery.
On Weds it said packing and was posted, it arrived this morning (Fri)!
I'd get in touch with them, looks like it got stuck in the system.

ps dont worry about going in over your head, play a few hours to get a grip of it and then start a new character.
There are 6 different beginnings to play so it will be like a new game if you choose different options or play the same again now you are familiar with it.

Read the manual, it explains.
Strength is used for all chars that want to melee.
Dexterity is the primary stat for long range weapons and a secondary stat for melee.
Daggers are a Rogue weapon (so it says).

Actually there is a bug where dagger dmg scales with str and not dex. Bioware is aware of the issue and intend to fix it. I read this somewhere on the official forums. I can't get on there now because it's blocked at work but I bet you can find the thread somewhere on the first page.

Just curious...is there a PDF manual for the Steam version? I didn't notice one in the normal documentation folders.

OK, I'll keep my eye on that

Most people who are complaining about the game's level of difficulty just don't have well balanced parties, and haven't leveled properly.

Some people, for example, have been complaining about dying too much - but then they've admitted that they don't have a healer in their party. Okay, then the party is imbalanced. I read one person complaining that 'mana' was difficult to come by - but it's not if you've leveled your mage properly, since there are 'mana absorption spells' in the Talent trees. In that case the person hasn't leveled up properly.

It's only a difficult game in the sense that you have to have some understanding of party mechanics, and leveling, and yes, alas, you actually do have to... read the frickin' manual!

Hey, any chance you can dumb the controls down enough for use with an Xbox360 controller? Is there by chance a default option in the in-game menu?

I'd like to play the best version of this game from my couch. I know, the KB/M controls are far superior but I've been getting used to playing PC games from a more comfortable position.

I have a keyboard and mouse that works just fine on the surface of my sofa and recliner chair. I am playing this game on my living room PC and the only problem I have is that the text size is too small to read so I end up having to sit closer to the screen.

I notice though that patch v1.01 decreases the difficulty on Easy and Normal settings. A little disappointing but I guess there must be compelling feedback that it's too hard. There's probably a huge new audience that hasn't played anything like this before.

Most poeple just want to build their character / party however they want and not based on strict balancing criteria.

I think that on normal / easy people should have more freedoms in that respect. Of course if you want to play on harder difficulties you're going to be forced to build a coherent party.

That said, Bioware has obviously responded to the difficulty by making normal / easy easier in the recent patch.

Same here its great, although on a 42" 1080p TV at 5ft away, text is easy to read.

I have this for Xbox 360, here is my Gamertag RJL

Add so we can chat or compare achievements!

I am starting to think this game is bugged with GTX 275s. For instance, in the Grey Warden camp, if I look towards the center where all of the buildings and torches and all that are, my framerates drop to 35 fps or so, but when I look around elsewhere I get 60+ and everywhere else. I turned off SLI too and in the same spot I get the same issue. I am on a QX6850 @ 3.5 ghz so I am definitely putting enough juice into this game... not sure what's up.

Leave taskmanager running while playing and see if any cores max out.

How quickly do you get a mage in your party? I got past the beginning area and went into the wild but the three guys they give you to start off with isn't making for a balanced party at all with my rogue. Looks like I might have to make a mage if this keeps up; running out of pots :).

Is there any reason to take cunning past 16?

You get a mage really soon.

Okay so there is a chance it´s actually shipped when it says packing? Or did your change status to shipped? I am in Sweden so that it takes a bit longer is normal but I expected a shipped status.

Not all bad though. Decided to go for the collectors edition strategy guide since it has some extras from amazon.co.uk which suggest they have them in stock.

So far so fun. I solved a lot of headaches by making a healer.

You must be playing wrong. I don't have a healer (just got to Loathering or whatever) and have had 0 problems and I'm playing on Nightmare. Haven't died a single time.

Sorry, I didnt see the status after that because I got an email on Weds saying it had been posted.
If you havent had that email, its probably not on its way.

Loathering is quite early in the game....

Took me about 8-10 hours because I read every bit of text I could find :) he said he rerolled a new character, so if he's on the same boat as I am, he wouldn't reroll if he spent that much time with a character already.

I don't know if he's past it or not, assumed he hasn't.

I can't test this now since I am at work, but what should I be looking for? And based on that, are there any tweaks I could do?

I am really enjoying this game so far. I'm very early in the game.
