Welp, I swallowed all of my red-team pride and bought an xfx gtx 260 core 216 today. Currently reading about 7100 ppd in fahmon.

Also brought my 4890 back on for folding, woohoo cold weather!

2 things:
1. I hate my life for the fact that this 260 rapes my 4870x2/4890 in ppd
2. Why is nvidia image quality so bad? My secondary looks like grainy crap now. The IQ from my 1950xtx to this is cringe inducing. It doesn't help that I run a tri-lcd with my 4870x2 displays right next to it. I've tried tweaking every setting in the book, can't get it to look half as sharp as my ati cards. :(

Have you tried it on other monitors? nVidia does just fine for image quality. (I dibbed both, so I know at least some bits).

Color settings? DVI/VGA?

I'm using DVI on all my monitors. Tried adjusting every setting I can find in the nvidia CP, although I'll admit my last nvidia card was a 5200fx, or somesuch years ago, so I am not versed on tweaking nvidia cards with the CP.

I never jack with the display settings with my ati cards tho, beyond resolution/color depth. I don't know if a screen cap could catch the difference. It's like aliasing or grain, hard to describe.

Stupid question: but is the output resolution your monitor's native resolution?

Yep. I'll be honest, the difference isn't major, but it's enough to irritate me. Almost like sharpness, like the ati card(s) are sharper?

I mostly see it on the taskbar. I use ultramon for a smart bar that spans my monitors in XP, and the royale noir theme on both desktops, the color and sharpness just looks noticeably better to me on an ati card. Like the text and shading on my bar is fuzzy. I know these descriptions suck but I'm doing my best :D, like I said it's barely noticeable, I'm just picking nits.

It is probably dependant on the monitor. Sort of how my old 17" worked well with an ATi HD4350, but was not at 'quality' with a 9600GSO. Newer 21" inch was great with both cards. (different systems, too). Minor quality difference, nothing like "needs AA" or something.

Check Windows update (if Vista/7) for any drivers for your monitor.

I haven't had a major issue with this yet, though searching / making a new thread in the general area will probably get more help.

EDIT: quality meaning, some wierd color issues, like... grainy color in some areas. Sort of like a multicolor static, but only a faint overlay, not a 'main image'.

Or I'm just overthinking it.

Is it bad that I bought the GPU solely for folding then? rofl

HA!

Many of us have many systems (full of GPUs) that are just for folding.

If it's wrong we don't want to be right. ;)

nah. I edited that out. I was overthinking it + harsh language.

Does your monitor have an 'auto fit' option? That removes most issues I have had with mine (though not the rainbow static overlay).

EDIT: that's it. I'm going to sleep. If I don't catch some wink-eye, I'm gonna snap. Good night!

EDIT2: [curses]... I'm gonna catch flak for this.

Wow, jacked up the monitor sharpness and now it looks a lot better, would have never thought that card to card you'd need to adjust monitor settings. Learn something new everyday, oh well.

Also, I want moar D, but, *sigh*, college. Maybe there will be more GTX 260's in my future if they get cheaper.

They where about 200 bucks a year ago..... 120 or so now, 75 a year from now?

As the point inflation marches on at Moore's law pace.

Edit for spelling's sake.

Yeah, but I <3 xfx, and that cost me extra. 184.99 at the egg. At least I get a lifetime warranty. Are BFG's cheaper? I didn't really look.

*EDIT* I'm really not a tard, just been really impressed with XFX, so much so that they are really the only maker I buy from now...

I don't run the heater in the winter. I let my folding heat my house.

I am so not kidding either.

Heheh, sorry, I was ref used prices. I buy everything I can used. It makes the same ppd if I buy it off the F/S forum used or if I buy it new off Amazon.

You're just making me regret the fact that I got a 4870 instead of a GTX260 even more. Even though I think NVidia are a bunch of greedy assholes.

lol...Moore's as in Michael Moore, not Mohr as in Niels-Bohr-but-spelt-with-an-M.

I knew how it sounded, not how it was spelled. :p

Awright, my first 10k+ day in 5 months and I've only had the thing in for 5-6 hours. MOAR.

Mr. Pedantic:
I feel your pain. It makes me really sadpanda that this gtx260 literally out ppd's my 4890 and my 4870x2 combined. Is any info on a new ati gpu friendly core just conjecture at this point, or is that getting addressed?

We know there is a new client coming.... when, we are not sure. (3-6 months is the best guess we have)

We are hoping that it will be better with ATI cards. We are fairly sure it wont be parity, but we hope it's better than what we have now..
