Dell U2711

Where is this unconfirmed speculatioin coming from? The link stated that it was wishful thinking for it to have the same panel as the new iMac. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened but hasn't Dell's 27" LCD's always been 1920x1200?

I think they need to resolve thier issues with the U2410 before they start doin somethin else, haha.

Anything less than 2560x1440 and they're shooting themselves in the foot.

From the dell website: http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&sku=310697

"The AY511 Audio SoundBar with Virtual Surround from Dell ™ is designed to enhance the enjoyment of multimedia digital content. Its sleek design, and delivery of great sound perfectly complements the performance and style of the Dell ST, SX and UltraSharp monitors."

"Compatible with SX2210T, SX2210, ST2410, ST2310, ST2210, ST2010 & ST2010-BLK and UltraSharp U2410 & U2711 monitors"

Whilst I do think it is wishful thinking that it will be 2560x1440, I can't help but wonder about it. If nothing else it certainly makes a lovely thought.

Besides the newer 27" iMacs that can be used as monitors, is the Dell Ultra 2709W the best 27" currently?

The 2709W has terrible input lag (50ms+). If it wasn't for this issue I'd probably have bought one by now.

I think 10e's testing showed 50 ms is the worst case, the average is more like 40 ms; which is still too much for anyone with output lag as their top priority.

I own and use a 2709W so I can tell you that the dreded gamma shift is much less than previous PVA panals, the black levels are as good as they get with no white glow or black crush. The only issue is wide gamut which can be midigated with settings similar to 10e's review. Also the backlight is completely even accross the entire screen with a minor drop off at the extream right side. No pink green tint, or sparkly coating. the bottom line is that it is a damn good display if your not a avid gammer.

Back to the topic at hand. It looks to me as if Dell bought into an LG only deal. Probubly at a better price (think MS before DOJ). All of the U series panals are LG IPS. If this is true than the only non TN 27 inch panal LG makes is the one used in the new iMac. This would explain why Dell has not realesed it yet. LG probubly has a deal with Apple to let them have the Wow factor. The bad news is that LG's quality control is lacking badly and Dell always goes lowest price possable so they will get second pick after Apple.

I hope that all of this forces Samsung to take output lag as a series issue, because they havent so far.

I understand it's not exactly a panel for gaming, but what about movies? Any noticeable defects?

this seams like delecious news. led plus ips, best there is!

Not really.

OLED it's the best there is. However, it will take a while until production goes mainstream, unless you go and shell out maybe 3000$ to get a custom made monitor (if that's possible) :p

You're missing a few zeros. Put it this way: Apple is sitting on $24 billion in cash, and has not yet made an iMac with an OLED. The technology isn't ready for anyone yet, and, along with all the other interesting new monitor technologies like SED/FED, seems to have been perpetually years away from market for about 10 years now.

Custom made monitors? REALLY?

I reckon that's not quite true, since there are a few netbooks with 7'' OLED screens lined up for the very near future, but yes - I agree it's going to take a while for us to see 20''+ OLED monitors and a bit more for them to be sensibly priced.

No; video looks real good on this display. I have mine connected to my DTV STB so I can watch all kinds of motor racing while I work on other stuff.

With Regard to OLED, it looks like it will be 2016 before it goes mainstream: http://www.dailytech.com/OLED+Prices+to+be+Lower+than+LCD+in+2016/article16680.htm

That's good to know. I might just take a look at the 2709W, then. Thanks!

Oh, and hopefully, even if not as low as LCD prices (maybe at the prices of LCD displays when they were released a few years ago?), we'll have damn good OLED screens a couple of years before 2016.

Does anyone at least have a release date on the U2711 or know the panel/resolution it will sport?

Hope the CR is great and it comes. It's finally a 16:9 I could live with if it has better CR than the U2410.

You gotta wait a while. Typically the 2011 monitors (last 2 digits of dell model numbers are the year) will come out at the end of summer 2010.

I hope you are wrong I have been checking this site three times a day waiting to hear more about this monitor and if it uses the same panel as the 27" imac. Is there any way to email Dell or LG and ask them to confirm these speculations? I have been more excited about this than anything else all year. I was going to make some major upgrades just so I would be ready for this beast.

The reason people are talking about this model number is because it is listed in the desciption for the Dell soundbar as being compatible with it. While that can be considered a clue that Dell may soon release a 27" monitor, Dell has never even acknowledged that this product exists, therefore, there is no information on it at all. Everything is speculation. It could come out in a few weeks, months or never.

I would assume that if it was listed on that soundbar that Dell intends to release it in the coming months. Otherwsie why bother adding it to that list? It may come down to supply as Apple is probably buying all the stock of these panels that LG is currently making. Hopefully they will ramp up. LG is also way overdue for a 27-30" monitor refresh of their own.

I hope the problems reported with the 27" imac panels on the mac forums don't crossover to these.

This would be good news if in fact it has all these inputs noted in that driver:
- VGA output
- DVI output
- HDMI output
- DisplayPort output

Engadget appears to have pictures up on their website right now...

http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-goes-pro-with-27-inch-ultrasharp-u2711-wqhd-lcd-monitor-hands-on

Although I am thinking it wasn't intended to be published to the public because I can't find a link to this page from any where on their website and the "back to post" link goes to http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/dell-goes-pro-with-27-inch-ultrasharp-u2711-wqhd-lcd-monitor-ha/ ... 1/7/2010?

So I am guessing we are going to be hearing a lot more about this monitor on the first day of CES. :)

Can anyone tell from the Engadget pictures whether the screen is glossy or matte?

Based on these poor photos, the uniformity looks lame even within the small browser window. It looks like budget IPS uniformity coupled with a considerable price tag. I'm not convinced that Dell can make a successful product with this panel.

I don't see how yopu can tell anything about actual picture quality from those lousy fuzzy pictures, and where did it say anything about price?

At least one of these photos: http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell...sharp-u2711-wqhd-lcd-monitor-hands-on#2556586 makes it look like a matte screen which is a notable difference from the iMac. This brings the dirty AG coating in to the equation if true. Dell is not known to produce glosy screens so I am thinken it really is matte.

On a screen this wide white glow has got to be a serious problem as well. I would like to see one in person, because that is the only way you can really know what is really going on with it.

Highly anxious to see this one in real life, although I certainly am a little concerned about Dell's level of quality.

Still if its close to the 27" imacs I've seen (and yes I'm aware there are complaints from some quarters about the 27" imac's IQ, but all the ones I've seen have been jawdroppingly gorgeous...) then color me sold....

... of course i'll have to see how the NEC's compare too even though its the same panel. ^.^

This is what I was considering when I spoke earlier. The other pictures seem to consistently show this change in temperature.

I really dont think you can make any kind of serious judgement on this screen from these pictures beyond the fact that yes, it appears to be 27". Goodness...
