There are free alternatives to Candybar if you only want to change your dock's appearance. Dock Library and SuperDocker are two. If you want to change application icons, however, then there's no getting around Candybar.

My desktop. Still can't figure out what colors look best. :( Or a font. Any recommendations to use for the weather/date/itunes?

I learned how to change application icons, not too tough. I'm mostly looking to change things like the dock graphic and the active item graphic that shows up underneath the icons on the dock. I didn't have luck using candybar, and I cant figure out why it didn't work. I'll try these other two you mentioned. Thanks

+1 for SuperDocker.

For icons, try LiteIcon. It's free and it can make use of icontainers.

Any chance for a link on this? I've tried to google the hell outta finding this image with no luck.

TinEye, the best thing to happen to image searches pretty much ever... it doesn't quite catalog everything but, if you find a pic chances are TinEye will be able to find it in different sizes or even the original source. It's a reverse image search, the first of its kind meaning you give it an image and it searches for dupes/variations, etc, and not the traditional way. Copy the link to the pic and post it at TinEye and let it do the search for you (I did and found multiple hits on that image in seconds).

Highly recommended... ;)

geektool.

takes a lot of fiddling to get it right.

maybe they'll be so generous as to share the scripts? :D

I see people still using Grab to get screenshots in OSX sooo...

Press Command+Shift+3, saves a PNG screenshot to the Desktop lickety split. Looks much better than having all that extra stuff included, wouldn't you say? :)

And Command+Shift+4 gives you a target/box cursor to draw around something onscreen; as soon as you draw the box and left goes of the left button, click, saved as PNG on the Desktop.

Thanks for the shortcut info! But what else would one use to do a screenshot in osx?

Just as an addendum, if you hit Command+Shift+4, and then hit the spacebar, you can take a screenshot of the entirety of a selected window.

Then here's a little trick I found with Adium to make chat windows "transparent":
