MW2, No Dedicated Servers, PB, 9v9 limit, leaning, etc etc

RIP for the CoD PC community but console game sales will be record breaking. IW / Activision know this only too well. I suspect this will be the last CoD game on the PC

I've spread the word to my friends, and now it's up to them if they want to boycott or not.

No, Treyarch has the next CoD and it won't be in WW2.... Surprising after the initial release, Treyarch has done a decent job supporting CoD:WaW.

But will it have dedicated servers? I'd imagine they will be forced to go down the IWNet route if Activison have their way. Will they call it TreyNet instead ;)

Well, since IW.net is Infinity Ward's offering, it depends on Treyarch and if Activistion isn't actually the one pulling the strings here. I still hope IW sees that this is perhaps one of the dumbs moves on their part and games that have had no dedicated server have bombed badly.

You know, there's always the option of setting up your own dedicated servers. I'm sure the larger clans would have no trouble getting donations to cover hosting fees.

There is no option for dedicated servers for MW2, that's what the uproar is about. They said private servers, which are still peer to peer, unless they tell us otherwise ;(
If that was the case, the community would not have this big of an issue, cause all we'd need to do is do that. However bashandslash is reporting that a GSP is stating that there will be an option for dedicated servers..... so, nothing is concrete currently.

You will still have cheating, it'll probably be the same or worse. VAC isn't much better with cheaters than PunkBuster.

false

VAC is probably the best deterrent for cheating... not only does it ban you from that particular game, but it does so for your entire account. Not only that, but it's very effective in catching cheaters.

really, what IW should of done, is leave in dedicated servers and used steam/VAC to catch people. It's a win win situation for everyone

That's exactly what I was thinking. They have gotten too accustomed to console kids eating up whatever nonsensical PR garbage they spew. Too bad for them the average PC user can see through all the marketing gibberish for what it really means.

+1, these suits and marketing retards don't seem to realize that they are dealing with a very sophisticated demographic, and not the population of knuckle dragging halo fan boy retards who salivate at the thought of paying $10+ for three shitty maps, or $2 to buy their avatars/dolls a t-shirt or a hat. Fucking morons!

Fourzerotwo made an update on his site... IW is completely missing the point! BANDWIDTH!!!!!!!!!! IF the server is crap, the experience is crap;

I recently broke news on a PC community member’s podcast that Modern Warfare 2 would be introducing a completely new backend infastructure called IWNET that would allow matchmaking for multiplayer games on PC. The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things, and sent shockwaves through the hardcore PC community, leading to many more questions than answers as to ‘HOW’ this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole.

Questions, assumptions, and speculation I intend to dispel.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.

How does it do this?

Matchmaking & Smoother Gameplay: When you want to player a multiplayer game on PC, in the past. You’d have to scroll through a Server Browser which listed every available server which was hosted by individual server admins. Each had their own private rules, mods, or ways of playing the game. Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING). With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you. All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL. So you’re always guaranteed the best game performance for where you are and what connection you’re playing on as well as an equal game with other players of your same skill level, not rank, but skill level. It doesn’t mean you’ll just be thrown into a random game! It will put you in the game that will give you the smoothest gameplay possible without you having to manually find a server with the best ping.

Playlists and Private Matches: As I described above, Playlists are pre-set game modes and gametypes for public games. If you just want to jump into a public game of Search and Destroy or Hardcore Search and Destroy and you don’t care about fully customizing it, then you can utilize playlists to do that quickly for you. However, say you’re in a clan and you want to play a Clan match with another team, or you want to practice for an upcoming tournament that has specific rules in a private game. Then you can start a Private Match (which is essentially like running your own private server) where you have complete control over the rules, who can join, boot players you don’t want, and essentially control the entire game or tweak it to your liking. Once the rules are set, you can invite the other team in or just start it up with your clan to practice with the custom rules before the match. This now allows you to play custom games out of the box without the need to install mods, find a modded server with the rules you like, or worry about not being in control of the match.

Party System and Friendslist: Modern Warfare 2 on PC also makes it much easier if you want to party up with your friends, or again, with your clan for a match. You can utilize the friendslist to see when your friends are online, and invite them to your Party. A Party allows you to move from game to game as a group. It’s great for clan matches, because you can party of with your clan and move from public game to public game together. Or if you’re doing a scrim, party up and invite the other clan (who is in a party) and they’ll all join at once. Set up a private match together and play. It makes setting up scrims or games with friends easier and hassle free.

Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters.

All in all, IWNET adds a load of new features that the PC version of our games have never had before and allows us an infrastructure to continue to update and improve on the game post-launch.

here is what will happen.

Everyone will host their own game because they want the host advantage. They will sit there for 5 minutes and have no one join their game. There will be a 20,000 games going with 1 person in each one....the host.

With no dedicated servers, IE no mods...that means more lag I'm guessing, and no ability for the no-perk/realism mod thing..

Lol. Fail. Wouldn't buy this for $5 at launch (except to resell it...).

Sounds like L4D. I always struggle to get a decent game

- no dedicated servers will remove "all of the cheaters, the insular communities and huge skill level disparities that the original game's community fractured into."

Before my brain completely melts down from this stupidity, this is the one item I really have to just single out for being the complete polar opposite of actual reality.

Are they kidding? Did someone say this or write this with a straight face, sober, or even remotely sane?

No way I'm paying $60 for this.

Here's what really bothers me the most and I hope I'm wrong here but I feel like I'm seeing a trend where things like dedicated servers simply are becoming a thing of the past outright.

If a huge, AAA marquee title like this isn't going to have them and the developers are all but bragging about that fact...to me that's ill omen in general.

All of the cheaters - VACs has plenty - moot point

Insular communities - they need to control what you do

Huge skill disparities - is the only way to get better by playing against better players. You have to learn the hard way, it's part and parcel of online gaming.

Fuck this, I have said my piece, those fucktards at IW and Activision can go screw themselves because I am not buying this game UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.....not even after its relegated to bargain bins after 6 months of abysmal sales on PC.

I look forward to their squealing when this game is released and pirated into oblivion.

Signing out.

@ Kenjiwing's quote

The IP is still IW / Activision's. Even though you must feel aggrieved at what has transpired doesn't entitle you to act like a dick

Please continue to quote a post that I already edited.. frustration causes one to say stupid things.

i bet you will do the same haha fuck this game i wont even pirate it. forza 3 will keep me occupied

I wasn't gonna buy it but it's one hell of a dick move...
I'll spread the word around to NOT buy this game.

Best thing that ever happened to Borderlands. That game looked like it was going to be overlooked with MW2 coming, now its one of the ones that gets mentioned as an alternative.

I'd like to see the day when we discuss PC Games in the PC Games subsection of the forums. There are some out there you know. Or, at least games that try to differentiate themselves on the PC platform.

Crying about a 100% console game that has been ported to the PC to suck up whatever dollars are available is.......getting old.

This is not a PC game people. Get over it. IW has been leading the way towards console the whole time. Almost since the beginning. I'm surprised your all surprised.

You know at first I was really upset about this becuase naturally I was excited about playing with the same gamers I play TF2 with. And I also believe IW does a good job with COD series. But you bring up an excellent point. IW are a console dev's now period!!!! This is not a pc dev! To me they make good shooters for the console. And that's where I'll play my USED copy of MW2. Whenever that may be. I know IW will love me buying a used copy so that's what I'll do.This is not a day one purchase for me at all now. Hey I own Halo 3 and Halo ODST so who am I to be outraged. Did IW F the PC community in the A? Sure they did but they are dead to me PC wise! MW2 is not on my radar release day. Also check out what Dice is doing with Bad Company 2 on the PC and 1943 on the PC. We give them a hard time but they at least put forth the effort to the PC community. Those are the PC/cross-platform shooters I'm now looking forward to (And of course BF3 come on Dice make it happen!!!) . And L4D2 is on the way the same month. I don't know about you but I believe Valve still cares about the PC enthusiast. To all those that say well this offers greater accessibility those players should by a console. If I want that I'll play Xbox 360/PS3. I want the options and intricacies that come with PC gaming. This is like say hey model airplane/helicopter enthusiast go to target buy a air hog and just have fun. Building those things yourself is too complicated and time consuming and not inviting to all people that like to fly stuff.

Remember we always can play uncharted 2....lol

Looking forward to Playing
Bad Company 2
Battlefield 1943
Battlefield 3
L4D2
Mass Effect 2

if it curbs cheating, then I'm all for it :)

I'm not trying to rag on you, but you are probably one of those people that thinks EVERYONE is cheating. Someone who types BS into the chat when they die, etc.

Half of the people wouldn't know cheating if they saw it.

Don't quote me, I'm encouraging piracy

Well the [H]ardforum is not the place to discuss such things. That's one of the reasons this forum has remained a good place to discuss games by taking a zero tolerance stance.

+1. Also, those' features' mentioned all exist in some form or another on the 360, so they're hardly new or groundbreaking.

Personally, I like being able to choose the game I want to get into based on ping, not have matchmaking put me in a game with Americans when I live on the other side of the world...the side of the world with shitty Internet. Lack of choice doesn't equal a better experience.

not true :) I see it often in the TF2 community. It's usually taken care of by an admin of that particular server (until the VAC ban goes through). Everything from wallhacks to speedhacks and aimbots.

The issue I have isn't that type of cheating (as its usually taken care of pretty quick if it's a decent server), its the people using tools to give themselfs prestige ranks and all the perks right off the bat that irritates me. Half the fun is leveling up your account and unlocking abilities/perks... if a lot of people start using that, then whats the point of playing it to earn those? Might as well just jump on board and use it too.

It's no different, although not nearly as "game breaking", as people using an idler program to unlock items in TF2

Gamespot gave Borderlands 8.5, with some rather asinine reasons to find fault with it ("game is too lonely when not playing in co-op" - wtf?).

...But just watch all the 'professional' gaming outlets fall over themselves as they rush to give CODMW2 scores in excess of 90% upon release.

Reading through that I couldn't help thinking bandwidth too.

Do IW not understand we all don't have 10GB lease lines at home. My upload speed is not great 1Mbps. Or letting someone else host the game and suffer the terrible disadvantage of latency. It'll be multiplayer hell.

Lonely co-op, isn't that a paradox

That guy was probably a bully in grade school. Sounds rotten to the core. I wouldn't support such a person. He even said we wouldn't have the balls to boycott modern warfare 2. They probably knew already that it was going to be a disaster but he wanted the money still. Thats the problem...Greed. The game is gonna suck anyways with no dedicated servers mods/maps.

And he looks like such a nice guy...
