Is an intake fan blowing on the videocard pointless now that cards are enclosed...

...draw air from the front?

Like the 5870. It is covered in a plastic shield and draws air from the vents pointed toward the front fan.

Any fresh cool air that is being drawn to the area where the video card intakes air is going to lower the temps

When I had tri-fire 4870s having a fan mounted perpendicular to the cards blowing into where their fan openings were helped temperatures dramatically. Getting fresh cool air into the intake can make a big difference, especially if your outside temps are really low.

the 5870's cooler isn't exactly anything new in concept, look at the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra and 5950 Ultra coolers, or the GeForce 4 Ti OTES (Abit only), same rough idea, basically having a front intake will help because the card has an access to cooler air at its intake, thats never a bad thing

Yes. My question is that if the cards intake from the FRONT, is there and point to a case with a fan blowing in on the SIDE.

They also intake at the fan. As long as there is some space between cards, a side mounted intake fan would help.
My Antec 1200 has a 120mm blowing at my 3 285s.

A side fan mounted near the expansion slot backplate or below the expansion slots (blowing up) does more to eliminate the dead spot (for air circulation) in that location than to cool the now fully-covered videocard.

This is especially important (not really, it's not like +2-3 Celsius case temp is going to kill my rig, but anyway...) now that I have a 5870.

My PSU and videocard are quite a bit cooler now.

As someone else mentioned, the fan also intakes air at the fan hub, not just at the race car like intakes at the front. Those intakes are only there to allow more air when there is another card in crossfire blocking the other intake.

I would keep the side intake fan just to help keep the airflow up. Depending on the position of the fan, it will also blow some cool air across the back of the card.

Yep a side mounted fan kills two birds with one stone. Both blowing cool air onto the cards and helps the exhaust fan/s get rid of the heat before it starts stacking. ;)

I agree SonDa5, I can't make head or tails of this thread. It's hard to know what each person means by "front"!

Edit: oooops

Are you considering going CF Jumpem? The heat won't be as much a problem with a single card.

As long as your case isn't one trying to be a silent one, I.E. no fans I'd say you shouldn't worry.

Towards the front of the case. The end of the 5870 where the two red vents are.

Those are hardly intakses. The main air flow is going to be right at the face of the fan.
At the face of the video card fan is where any cool air from outside should be going by use of other case fans.

At first AMD stated they were only cosmetic. Then later said they also act as intakes, but yes the fan area is where the cards are drawing in air to blow across the heatsink.

Since I'm running multi-cards, I have both a front mounted internal and side case fan.

From what I understood, they are intakes. So in my antec 900 case i put one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185065
I have a fan controller as well, so I keep it around 1200-1300 RPM. This morning after about 3 hours of RE5 i check my temps on my 5870. It was at 59c, with the Video card fan at 33%.

This thing runs cooler then my 4870 did....impressive
