My Eyefinity setup

In regards to playing WoW and other games for that matter. Do you actually get to see more when using 3 screens like that? Or is it one immage that would normally fit in one screen beeing streched across all 3?

You see more than would normally fit in one screen otherwise it'd be the same image stretched 3x as much which wouldn't be pleasant at all.

Normally on a single 24" monitor with 1920x1200res you would just see that center image. Now with Eyefinity those mountains come into view on the sides I never saw before, unless I turned the character around or the camera controls

Ick, its 1920x1080. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that seriously skew the game and/or not even be usable at 5760x1080 since most games won't recognize the ratio? 1920x1200 seems to be whats been tested.

Bumping up to 24" is when it starts to cost a lot.

I've also been wanting a 1920x1080 monitor for my xbox.

16:9 ratios are pretty dang common now. I was surprised when I got my laptop (1366x768) that just about every game ran at that res (except starcraft... but starcraft doesn't run at anything other than 800x600).

Yes they all have to be the same rez at this point. there is some speculation that they will later be able to use run different res monitors. Till it can do it though.. i say its vapor.

You see a lot of people ditching their 30s now and going with with 3 24s

Its really put me off on buying a new monitor. I was set on getting a 24 that was decent but not totally expensive.. now I am having to go back and be sure to get one that has displayport on it and that really limits the choices.

Unfortunate since this kills Eyefinity for me from both a cost and set up perspective. I really want to go with Eyefinity, but I a) don't want to get rid of my beautiful 30" HP and take a loss buying three lesser monitors b) think 3x1 21"x30"x21" would be one of the best set ups.

I don't believe 5760x1080 is 16:9, anyone want to confirm that?

Edit: nevermind, it is (just divided by 3, duh).

Few things I hope you are all working on, I know all of us Eyefinity owners are looking for soon.

- Bezel management

- Dealing with the game developers to create the correct aspect ratio or FOV (field of view) for these extreme wide resolutions.

- Crossfire to work in Eyefinity

- Some 2d Desktop options that are easy to adjust ?

- Same with games, need the main character info...

Answers without specific timetables because of legal reasons:
  • Yes, relatively soon.
  • Yes, timing is not under AMD's control.
  • Yes, relatively soon.
  • Uncertain for reasons not under our control (although we are working the issue).

Good news :)

My only gripe with Eyefinity so far is the fish eye lens or very stretched out look on the side monitors in games, it is pretty bad and annoying to me now. In WoW it is almost a distraction, the images look bent or like an acid trip all distorted too much, where it does not seem to go with the perfect quailty image on the main/center display.

I think this is all the issue with FOV ( field of View ) and the Aspect Ratio of 16:9 it sets this extreme resolution of 5760x1200 at. They need to have in-game settings to adjust the FOV and aspect ratio to like 48:9 or what ever that would be ? Until then the games look way too stretched out on the side monitors where is looks freaky, and almost like a different game compared to the center display.

should make a wooden form of the same shape, and take a apart the lcds and secure them together to make only the smallest gap in-between screens (would look like a cockpit)

Cleaning up the desk tomorrow with some nice IKEA stuff. All the wires were because I was so rushed to get to the gaming part.

For the last time, if it's that bad, you need to turn down your FOV.

This is the same effect you see on a 4:3 monitor when you crank the FOV up to 120. It's simply too high for your sitting distance.

If the game has absolutely no way to adjust the FOV, it's time to send an email off to the developers. :p

arent the special samsung made for eyefinity monitors 23" @ 1920x1080?

Edit: nevermind, it is (just divided by 3, duh).

16:9 means for every 16 horizontal steps [pixels] there are 9 vertical ones

16/9 = 1.78

1920/1080 = 1.78

5760x1080 = 5.34

5.34 expressed in a fraction or aspect ratio format is 48:9 or 48/9

this is why we have the fish eye issue and other such problems in games... why text is stretched and circles are ovals etc

basically game devs need to update their fov and aspect options to include all sorts of insanely wide and tall resolutions and aspects

the game world is already there... i mean in a shooter all you have to do is look up or spin left and there the view or data is...

but valve when making half life 2 didnt expect anyone to ever select 5760x1080 with the horizontal view being continuous across almost 6000 pixels

they'll get it together soon and we're going to see some amazing results :)

I am dissapointed, that a mixed configuration like
20" - 30" - 20" does not work.
I cannot imagine to sell this perfect combination for 3x24".
Maybe i have to wait another year...

Finally got my triple monitor setup working. I have three 28" I-Inc 1920x1200 in 3x1 landscape mode for 5760x1200. Yes i have a huge desk. i bought two 5850's and despite numerous sites saying that crossfire does not work, the drivers recognized both cards in crossfire mode. I verified this with GPU-Z. I havent done any benchmarks as of yet. I have only tried a couple of games, but I am in complete awe so far. I play WoW and Call of Juarez-BiB with awesome detail.

I had to buy the Dell active Displayport adapter for third monitor, but believe me, it is worth it. Sound comes through the middle monitor via HDMI cable. I am loving it so far.

I have a similar hanns-g 28 inch monitor. Would love to get 2 more for 3x28 but aren't the bezels kinda big on these 28 inchers? (On the other hand, the main display is so big, maybe you really don't notice the 1.5 inch bezels.) You got any pics you care to post?

I'm in the same boat except, I didn't pull the trigger on the 30" when I read up on eyefinity. What's your current setup?

Pics or Vids please! :D

I cannot freaking wait till you can do portrait, landscape, portrait. Because i just got a new main monitor thats 32 inches big. My other previous monitors were 2 21 gateway monitors. Right now i have them in portrait because the bezels match the 32 incher perfectly. I can't wait!!!

I just took the eyefinity plunge myself, replacing my 30" Dell with 3 24" Dell 2408WFPs after seeing a passionate demonstration at my workplace by the Eyefinity father ;) I am beside myself with just how awesome this is to actually see in person. Here's a crappy photo oy my setup (yes, I'm another WoW player -but I play pretty much every game!):

I was playing around with TF2 earlier as well and it worked just great. I can't wait to try some of these flight simulators I just picked up today.

At the local Fry's they have the nVidia 3D-vision demo setup. It looks pretty nice I'll admit but I have a problem in that I have to wear glasses, and well, wearing something like that on top of glasses is annoying. After a while you get a headache from the glasses pinching your glasses.

Now I have both a Radeon 5870 and my old 8800 GTX that I've shoehorned for PhysX :)

Full disclosure: I am an engineer that works for AMD (in CPUs and not in graphics), and these opinions are only my own. My list of GPU's that I've owned: voodoo2, tnt2, geforce 2, geforce 3, geforce 4, radeon 9800 pro, nvidia 6800ultra (both agp and pci-e), 7800 gt (sli), 7900 gtx (sli), 8800 gtx (sli), 3870x2, 4870, 4870x2, 5870. I buy whatever works best for me, is available, and for the money. I switched to ATI (which then became part of AMD) ironically because nvidia's vista drivers were horrific at launch.

I'm just annoyed that I can't get my 20-30-20 setup to work with Eyefinity otherwise I probably would've pulled the trigger on it now.

Oh great father of eyefinity, any insights on this? :D

EDIT: Holy shit, I need to update my sig.

<----REALLY JEALOUS

So how does it run while raiding? and in dalaran at prime time? I just got my 5870, and On my current system (which is being upgraded next week) p2 940 @ 3.7ghz. I had wow at 8xAA Edge-detect, 16x AF 1920x1200 I was getting around 45-50fps.

Curious as to the frames you get at 5760X1200

Thanks for the info so far though :)

I was worried that it was going to be stuttery but haven't seen any evidence of that, and that's with every graphic option cranked all the way to the right. In Dalaran I was getting 40-50 frames per second, I could spin the mouse around to watch myself rotate fast and it was buttery smooth.

My guild raids this Sunday I'll post an update on how that is :) I'm really worried about Onyxia and the whelps, lol.

OOOO yea the whelps....LOL

Ya onyxia will be a good test :) ill def be lookin foward to that. Take some pics too :)

I think I like the setup that Kyle had... 3x 22" monitors in portait. 3x 24" monitors look too stretched.

How did you get your character name and status bar on the main/center screen ?

I made the jump as well to Eyefinity! I purchased 3 Dell P2310H monitors LINK for ~$725 shipped after coupons and other discounts. The monitors should arrive by this Tuesday. All three will be connected to my new XFX HD 5870.

I'll post my finding after I play around with it.

Awesome set up guys! How well would this work with just 2 monitors if at all? I may go the 3 28" since I have 1 already but was wondering of just 2 would work since I don't think i would have the space to hold 3.

For WoW did you do any custom settings to your "Config.WTF" folder for FOV ? (field of view) do get rid of the fish eye lens ? Someone set the max it can be set to is 179, 180 degrees, but for 5760x1200 I think 180 degrees is still too much, it should be 3 times what ever standard single mode is ?

It's been my experience in source engine games that increasing FOV also increases the fisheye effect. I'm assuming WOW will be the same. It's the same effect in photography, for a given lens focal length (14mm wide angle, 35mm standard lens, 200mm telephoto). Normal lenses are referred to as "rectilinear" where ideally even at the far edge of the image there's no distortion.

So you can have (for the sake of discussion, these aren't real numbers) a 14mm wide angle lens with a 100deg FOV, without distortion, and a 14mm fisheye lens with a 180deg FOV that looks rather surreal when taking a picture of anything but the sky. More importantly you can have a 35mm camera which I think is close to what games are using, with a 60 degree FOV, and then bump that to a 10mm with a 120 degree FOV and neither one will look distorted.

So what's needed is the ability to have different virtual focal length lenses, for a triple screen having the option to go to an 8mm lens would probably be ideal. On single monitors the 35mm might work out better

Edit: Thought about this a bit more and remembered that changing focal length also changes the "zoom" of the lens, a wider angle will also make things look further away, so that's not a quick easy fix either. 35mm is considered the "standard" lens because the perspective it gives on a full frame camera is close to what people see in real life. Either way some sort of software distortion correction will be needed.

To answer some questions: to get the resolution, there was a resolution option in WoW that let me get it that wide. I didn't touch Config.WTF though that is an interesting point - I didn't know there was a FoV option in there so I'll play around with it.

Also, I use xperl and bartender which lets me move the stuff around so that it's on the center screen. There are still quite a few windows that end up on the left side like quests, the social window etc, that I have to find another addon for I think that'll let me move it to the center screen.

The only issue that I would see Troub with 2 monitors is that the bezels will be right in the center of your view, which could get kind of annoying. You don't really notice the bezels in a 3x1 setup provided your monitors are big enough because it's in your peripherial vision; and you get used to it (like driving a car)

It's definitely a UI mod and it definitely looks like Xperl as mentioned previously in the thread. Just install it, there are several links way back yonder.

EDIT: ah well redpriest beat me to it anyway.

Running around in orgrimmar is 120 fps to 90 fps (90 fps with about 40 people on screen near bank/ah).

I just did wintergrasp, intense pvp action with about 40-50 fps average, no real spikes where it became laggy at all. This card has a disgusting amount of headroom.

A pic with two sidescreens moved behind the center, seemed to be better for gaming, but not for Windows desktop as much ?

^ Whats the width of the vertical bezel of one of your monitors? Curious how two more of mine would be.

I like your paint can system, lol. But I'm not sure I could handle the stress of having something propped up on a book or something; looks like it could slide around if someone accidentally bumped it.
