Will a 5870x2 have microstutter?

Does a dual GPU card have the same microstutter issues that Crossfire/SLI single GPU cards have?

Will you notice it is a better question.

Have you used a 4870X2 or some other similar crossfire setup and found it too stuttery to use? I doubt the 5000 series will be any worse, most likely the same or better. If the current gen is fine for you, I wouldn't worry about the 5870X2.

ATI cards have not had any significant micro-stutter in Crossfire since the 3xxx series.

The risk is always there certainly. In general it's not apparent in every game. The main problem is certain games rely on the primary GPU to render a feature (PhysX is one of those features) and the first GPU becomes the limiting factor. SLI is not free and certainly has an overhead. When that happens, dual cards can actually be slower than a single card when the minimum framerates start caving in.

A single GPU solution would certainly involve the least amount of headaches.

I have seen microstutter running SLI years ago; however, I have not seen any on my HD 4870X2 from release date. I'm sure the 5870X2 will be fine.

One of the surest ways to start an argument in this forum is to use the word "microstutter" in any question.

With my 5870 Crossfire setup, I honestly notice no Microstutter, period. And yes, I'm very sensitive to visual problems like that, so I'd notice it if it was there (tearing for instance, drives me absolutely nuts).

Of course it will, Because Nvidia says it will, and thats why you need a Physix card for batman!

Lol. Just because they found a measurable amount of SOMETHING in a graph somewhere, that means micro stutter is there.

Yeah, these arguments with all their concrete evidence; what happened to the good old days of accusations, faith, and FUD?
But can you notice it, that's the question.
Exactly. It'll depend on each individual set-up and how well AMD's drivers work with it.

I'm reviewing projectors and displays for a Home Theater magazine and can spot every problems with video, even those that 99% of the people can't see if you don't point it to them precisely.

No problems with my 4870X2, and waiting for the 5870X2 to come out to buy it.

Exactly.
ChrisRay pointed out once the FSP are around 30ish, it is more likely to be felt.
I've run 8800GTX/280/285s in SLI and haven't noticed it. Those with CF have also posted they haven't noticed it. So if it is there, and you don't notice it's no problem.

Yes, there is still microstutttttttter -

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...force-GTX-285-SLI-Multi-GPU-Shootout/Reviews/

"The basic trouble caused by the irregular frame distribution is still there on setups of two, three or four cards of the HD 5800 series. As soon as the amount of frames per second drops, it gets noticeable in many games that the frames are not delivered in a regular interval. This causes a jerky picture flow although the framerate should be smooth. On a single GPU card this does not happen. "

Yeah I trust that site as far as I can throw a school bus. They are the guys that tried to say that Crysis actually benefited from a quad core by using different CPUs instead of changing the affinity on the same CPU. It would be sheer luck if any other reputable review site found the same problem. Ironically, my GTX280 SLi is nowhere as smooth as my old 4870x2 (who knows whether its microstutter).

dual 5870's in cf stutter now on occasion at 25x16. users gaming at anything lower won't notice it.

Are you sure its microstutter or could it just be the game slowing due to low memory, etc?

pretty familiar with microstutter. rather than just slow performance or low frame rate, i can see the image fluctuating. anyone who's seen microstutter knows it immediately.

How do we even know this? The damn card isn't even out yet, and we don't know if ATi decided to do something different for their x2 cards, even.

Exactly i notice it at once! every single fps drop in the games are like hell for me!

I will never get 2x cards again! this is my 2nd multy gpu configuration that microstutter had GTX295 before now 5870s both "have the " microstutter! issues

Multy gpu configuration = microstuttering some notice it some aint.

If you notice it enough to bother you = sucks to be you and more power to you.

I had a 3870x2 for 2 days I returned it cuz of microstutter in Crysis
bought a 4870x2 and no microstutter : best card ever for me.

5790 or (5870x2) whatever they call it will no doubt be improved in the MS dept.

Don't worry. People who don't even know will still claim microstutter, based off of a test that has no similarity to a single PCB solution.

ati claimed that their sideport technology would improve performance with dual gpu cards like the 4870x2., though they never enabled that feature on those cards so the gpus communicated with each other via an on pcb pci-e bus. i noticed occasional micro stutter with 4870x2's as i noticed occasional micro stutter with dual 5870's. whether sideport will be enabled on the 5870x2 remains to be seen. whether sideport will be effective in limiting micro stutter at high resolutions also remains to be seen.

its funny how ATI mention about it but never really do anything with it...

were waiting for sideport, but I give up..its just a vaporware...

Half the people out there probably see regular stuttering and call it microstuttering

Oh and lol@the pcgamehardware review... they're the only people that ever claim it and they've done some questionable reviewing back in the day, so I take little stock in their comments that no one else seems to care

Also to add:
Pcgamehardware review also put up some videos in their first story about Microstutter.....funny they took down these videos down of what they thought was microstutter.
