I got my LianLi PC-A05B ! it's Small!

I was thinking on a ssd but i picked up a WD Caviar Black WD6401AALS. Drive is quiet and fast. Currently i'm looking to do a dual fan cut on the top but i suck at cutting. trying to figure out how to do it clean lol.

yeah the 640gb western digitals are fast for traditional platter hdd's. i have two AAK's in RAID 0 and they are short stroked to 100gb to give me an access time of 7.4ms and a transfer rate of 215gb

but an ssd with instantaneous access time and comparable transfer speeds would be amazing. that would probably yield the most performance for my rig.

easiest way imo to make clean holes for dual 120mm fans on top is to get a 4 1/2 inch hole saw drill attachment. perfect holes for 120mm fans.

here is a pic of drilling out the holes for my brother

Hey I got a blue LED ring on my vandal switch does that count?

The two switches were made for this case and is worth getting them.

The SSD is not too bad either.

I want a SSD..but dam do they cost...right now that is :D

Oh and haadij404 your work is tight..(hey take a black Marker and go around that whole..to hide the silver) :D

thanks man. yeah that silver isn't very sexy but the plan is to buy thin U channel trim like this. Should help out quite a bit.

After you drill the holes, did your temps take a major drop? How much do hole saws run? and i dont't own a drill. I do have a dremel.

I only drilled one hole in mine and it dropped my video card's idle temps by about 8-10c. So there is obviously a heat pocket around that area in the case.

that sounds more then what I can do, is there a dual 120mm fan templates or does it come with the template when i purchase one?

There's one on the packaging, but to be completely honest, the AC Ryan grills aren't to specs on the sizing, and I believe they did it on purpose. i.e. the holes don't line up exactly right to the fans, etc.

Alternatively, I made a series of download-friendly easy-to-use printable common-size fan templates (single and radiator installs) for everyone's use over at MNPCTech.

Enjoy and good luck with the mods.

If you look back on page 317 you can see my installation, The cut out was done with a dremel and is very rough. The Radgrill covers up the rough cuts though, so no one will notice.

Or you can get the top cover like I did.

It depends on how much you want to save.

I was within $10.00 and I like the factory look on mine.

You just have to decide the look and function you are after.

How it the build coming?

Speedwise I am up to 3.6 without any hickups at the same temps as before so things are improving everyday.

The cleanest look would be to either paint or use the marker on the silver edges.

The case is unforgiving in that respect and any addition of a trim strip ruins the clean look.

I tried the strip around my window but even that little thickness spoiled the smooth front look so I took it off and used the marker instead. It looked much better overall.

It is a FLW (Frank Lloyd Wright) type case that takes effort to keep it clean that way. JMTCW

Well after using the case for a week. I must say that my upper card is 8 degrees C hotter than the bottom one.

I do have a http://www.coolerguys.com/840556082724.html as another exhaust, but it doesn't seem to help the top card at all.

I'm thinking that panel edvb used is looking like a nice solution.

Use the dremel with reinforced cutoff wheels. Works a treat!

I downloaded the A.C. Ryan Radgrillz template, but I didn't end up using it at all. I just positioned the grill where I wanted it (using a digital caliper), and did a pencil trace on the outer-edge, and the outer holes. Use a 5/32" drill bit for the outer holes and grab some #8-32 (or 4mm) socket head screws 3/8" length (or 10mm). I also traced a line that was 5mm on the inside of the outer-edge trace, and I cut along that line. Don't forget the masking tape!

The fan screw holes are intentionally a bit small. You'll need to drill out those holes a bit more as well.

For those that need a visual aid (or hand holding, lol) through the procedure, I had put together a guide on grill installation a little while back here. Installation of the AC Ryan grills is basically the same procedure.

Good luck!

Looks like I will be ordering my AC Ryan's grill tonight when I get home!! How much are the special blades for the dremel run around?

I bought a PC-A05N B yesterday so I will be joining the club very soon! I'm excited. I'm going to migrate my FT01B to the Lian Li.

Hey guys, has anyone with this case fitted the new ATI HD5870? I'm just a little concern about the heat since there are blowholes on the rear of the video card.

Well I just got my PC-A05 put together. It's the i7 rig in my signature, and I got a different cooler (dumped the Coolermaster V8 and got a Noctua instead).

It went together fairly easy although I have some work to do on my cable management. I may make custom length cables because right now it's a huge mess.

I may also put a blow hole in it because I found that evacuating hot air is a problem with this case. I made a significant drop in my overclock from 3.8GHz to 3.4GHz beause the heat was absolutely unmanageable after a couple minutes stress testing, which is unfortunate. I made a duct from the rear fan to the CPU cooler which helped some, although it does get up there. At 3.4GHz I can get away with 1.12V which I guess is pretty good. Temperatures still peak at 80C though lol.

fits perfectly. temps are great. i took out the HDD cage. but, i also have a 2x120 blowhole at the top of the case.

will it fit with the hdd cage?

edit: damn i just found this pic on overclock.net and damn just barely. probably wont fit if there a hdd in the top slot :(

considering the size of this case, i'm not sure having it packed full of HDDs and optical drives is the best thing. just my opinion. since my HDD cage is out, i use the 3.5 bay for my HDD, and i'm thinking about removing my optical drive all together b/c i rarely use it. once i remove the optical drive, i can then move my HDD to the top 5.25 bay and the 5870 to the top X16 slot, which would open up things a bit more. since i plan on getting a 5870x2, this may end up being the best option.

here's a quick shot of my system layout (still under construction):

I still need to clean up the wiring some, and perhaps finish sleeving the wires. I ran out of sleeving and got lazy. I did have two GTX260s, however one died, and I'm waiting on the RMA. That's why I have a lot of cables up there with the single card.

mrmylanman, you don't seem to have a top blowhole ... what were the temps on the top GTX260 before it died?

Not sure. By the time I thought about trying it out, it was dead. :-(

you should definitely make a blow hole for that setup. 2 gtx260's in SLI in this case without a blow would definitely get way too hot.

you actually have it quite easy. the top panel on the a05n is removable so it wouldn't be very hard to do. 2x120mm would be perfect to keep those cards cool.

I was thinking about getting that one top panel I saw a few pages back that was meant for another case but supposedly fits on the A05 or something like that.

Or there are some things that fit on top of the PCI area that would make it keep the clean look of the case, yet still add to the airflow.

I am not sure if I will actually do this, since it involves spending more money, but we shall see.

The one thing I hate is the little cover for the inputs.

The reason I went with mine is the lack of it and the easy way to rotate it 180 degrees so the fans are in the back.

If they made it without the cover I might get one to try out but for now the double 120mm fans look great and work well.

Adding HTPC to the system now.

Overclocked at 3.6 seems to be the sweet spot with no temp increase.

HD cage at higher OC speeds just does not work for the airflow on this case .

That is why I did what I did for a happy balance for the size case we have.

edvb, thanks! .. but I really meant a zoom-in on the edge of the window to see the quality of the cut (I believe you used a CNC machine to do it, right?)
