HD 4890 Coil Whine?

HIS brand, no idea what version it is, and I have never had the coil whine. Ordered this card from newegg about 3 months ago, so its a recent version.

XFX non-XXX version.

I THOUGHT I heard something. Then I realized it was a DVD spinning away and slapping against the tray.

No problems here so far, but its only been operational for 2 days.

HIS IceQ 4 4870 1GB

No coil whine.

My old sapphire x1900XT used to whine like motherfucker, though.

Sapphire mundane 4890 with reference cooler and their own redesigned blue PCB. Definitely whines when displaying certain things.

Is that what i've been hearing:confused: on my 4890. it's not loud but yeah i do here it when it starts 3dmode. is there a fix?

Coil whine is the result of interplay between the video card, the PSU and maybe even the motherboard, which can also have coil whine. Make sure you have correctly identified the source of the coil whine - which can be a difficult task.

So if you were to experience some coil whine, without knowing the direct source, what can you do, or what program can you use to stress each individual component to determine the culprit?

The tricky part is that just because the whine is coming from a particular component, that doesn't mean that is the component that is causing the problem. In many situations, the video card can be the root cause of the whine but the actual sound comes from the inductors inside the PSU.

My 8800 Ultra had terrible coil whine...I found the capacitor causing it and put hot glue all around it, stopped it completely!

Coil whine has nothing to do with capacitors. Capacitors will only squeal when they are failing.

Inductors...

basically, any cheap component is prone to this.
If you ever hear your PSU squealing... run (and ditch it).

Coil whine has nothing to do with low-quality PSUs. Many Seasonic units do it and those are certainly not bad PSUs by any means.

Sorry! I was saying if you heard a whine from your PSU, it typically is a good indicator of it being a bad quality PSU.

But again, that is incorrect. The presence or absence of coil whine has no relation to the quality of the PSU.

low quality PSU or not...........if it whines, I'm not buying it or keeping it. I've actually only used Enermax and Antec (although, I have come close to buying Silverstone or PCP&C) in all the units I've built for myself or other people and have never had PSU coil whine. Anyway, we should probably get back on topic and back to video card coil whine.:)
