Stupid Computer Thief of the Year

What I mean is, as much as I like big guns (AK 47 FTMFW!!), IMHO I'd pick a samurai sword over any gun for house defense, any time of the day. I mean, it's not like burglars with UZIs are breaking into houses now, and the only way to defend yourself is with an AK-47 and planting some C-4 all around your house...

I think you would be at a disadvantage if you were using a sword in a confined area like a small house. A handgun would be far less unwieldy. The intimidation factor is quite high on swords though - sometimes moreso than guns, which is hopefully all you need to resolve most issues.

Besides, in case somebody _Does_ break into your house, you may not have enough time to get your gun (y'know, keeping them away from children and stuff), instead you can just keep your samurai sword on a shelf or rack in your living room (far far away from a child's reach)...
If I were a kid, I'd be awfully tempted to swing around a kick-ass looking sword so I wouldn't consider simply mounting them in a high place as "kid safe". Hell, I'd be tempted to now if I didn't know better than to play with something that I have no training with.

If that kid gets charged that is just stupid, who lunges at a person with a sword, geesh he should've just ran away or something. I'm all for this the guy was in the wrong for trying to rob the kids and then lunging at them he deserves what he gets.

I hope he doesn't get charged because that would be pretty ridicious by the information the article provided. Since my wife won't let me have guns (yet), my home defense is also a samuri sword albiet I prefer the short sword to the full sized katana. But, it sure is hell intimidating.

If the guy was Asian, can't it just be seen as a historical item. But you would think one slash would of been enough.

how come no Darth Vader jokes yet?

If you're stupid enough to lunge at a person who has a weapon, and you don't, you deserve whatever happens.

To quote Bloodrayne, "You saw the blades, what did you think was going to happen!?"

Dude shoulda ran.

I hope the kid doesn't get charged.

I'd politely beg to differ in regards to home defense. A 5.56 could run through your wall, through the neighbor's, and plink an unwanted 3rd party. That's why I'd never get my AK out unless I heard multiple bad guys and wanted the intimidation factor that only big ugly can bring. The 40 round mag ices the ugly cake...but I still run the risk of putting a round through one of my neighbors.

That shotgun isn't going to have that kind of distance. A good 870 and some 00 buck and you're all set to rid the home of any bad guys...

Lucky me, because I don't have any neighbours to worry about, plus I can effectively continue engaging as they are fleeing from my property. What I would like is to get hold of some Mk 262 5.56 ammo SpecOps uses for their weapons.

That's what I meant. Take full control of the situation and scare shitless the burglar in a microsecond... a huge ass sword like those katanas surely will do the trick... Hell, I'd be scared shitless if somebody tries to swing a sword like those on my face :p

As for the children's safety, IMO I'd educate them (if I had any someday)... I'd make damn sure they understand that they should never, ever, _Ever_ mess around with it... Or else lol

All too easy to cut yourself or one of your friends in close quarters, even with training. I would really prefer a kitchen knife over a katana for home defense.

Well im sorry, but I typically don't have $500+ in cash lying around. And the holes in the walls greatly depends upon the ammo or in this case, buckshot size you use. You can buy reduced recoil buckshot for HD purposes or go with buckshot 4BK to reduce chances of over penatration through walls for apartment dwellers like me

It called savings man you should consider it!

I hadn't seen it mentioned here, but I saw on a Maryland news outlet that the burglar had 29 previous arrests. No pity for him, whatsoever.

you Americans have all these laws that state that you can actually harm someone who breaks and enters your property.

Here up north in Cana-f*cking-Da, no can do. If someone breaks into your house, and you chase him down the stairs and he trips and breaks his leg, he can SUE your ass and WIN the f*cking case. Goddamn Canada and their crap-tastic justice system. You also can't even physically touch the guy unless he attacks you first...

What the fuck? How?

i really dunno how, something about how criminals have their "rights" and they dont deserve to be "hurt" even while stealing your shit in your own house.

there was this news report a few years back, about how a family went on vacation for a week and a half. During their trip, a criminal climbed their garage roof to try to steal their car. However, he broke the garage roof or something and fell into the garage. He couldn't get out of the garage (the door was locked from the outside or something), and had to live off the cans of pop in the garage for like a week, and had no other sources of food. When the family came back from their vacation, they saw this burglar in their garage when they opened their garage, and the burglar ran out and later SUED the family for "keeping him trapped for a week without food". The jury must've been composed of burglars or something, as the family had to frickin reimburse the burglar for "starvation" in their own garage.

Here in Florida, if I feel threatened, I can shoot first.
Gotta love self protection laws that actually work. The Florida Law basically means you break into my house, the DA automatically assumes I feared for my life and shot first without asking questions.

Kudos to the student, fuck the criminal with a stupid huge ass record. he got what he deserved.

Let me see if I get this straight, cause I'm heavily medicated right now. He gets released from prison on Saturday, he breaks into the house on Monday stolen 2 laptops and a Playstation and then comes back and breaks in again on Tuesday meets four angry students one of which has a sword and charges that one. I nominate this one for a Darwin. Best part, 3 witnesses, one dead guy and one guy with a sword, can we say "Getting away with murder."

ITT: Anime nerds who think anything Japanese is extremely great.

The scenario described here is very shady. They had things stolen from them earlier before, and find the guy in their garage (or trap him there?) and "confront him." There were four of them and one of them was wielding a sword and we're supposed to be led to believe that this guy lunged at them? It's EXTREMELY unlikely.

Secondly, how did they get a clean cut on his hand like that so easily? If a guy is lunging for you, how do you just chop off his hand? There is also no mention if the burglar's identity was known prior to the persons whose house was burgled.

Who knows what could have really happened there. But be sure you aren't getting the full story, and you never will. The perpetrator did commit an unlawful act, but I don't think it was worth killing the guy over it.

Again, an unarmed guy "lunging" at a group of 4 other men, one of them armed with a sword. Yeah, right.

That's why tanto swords were invented as they were ment for indoor fighting. 10" blade with 5.25" grip is much better than a standard kitchen knife. Plus you can get one for only $50 (you can also drop a few grand on high quality swords). Some advantages a short sword has over a gun is that it will never jam or run out of ammo and you are less likely to injure bystanders. Also you can show swords off as a piece of artwork. There arn't many guns that are functional that are considered pieces of art. But just remember, like guns, swords can still be used against you which is why it is probably a good idea not to keep any kind of weapon in the house. Your property isn't worth your life.

Maybe he was high on that PCP!

Dont assume his hand was cut off at the wrist. A severed hand could mean only a finger or part of his hand. And that would be far easier than cutting it off at the wrist like most of you belive. If the blade went in between the fingers a quick swipe could lop off 70% of a hand without much effort.

So if Mr. Home-invader lugned at them and tried to catch the sword like a idiot......

BTW I dont care if they tied the guy up and took turns swiping at him. I hate theives!!!! Glad there is one less in the world!!!

Yeah, I am also having suspicions as to whether it played out the way the students say it did. I mean we can't tell for sure, and if they had been robbed on monday and were pissed off, then found some unarmed guy trying to steal some of their shit, they may have wanted some revenge.

Also the the whole story about the guy stuck in a garage for a week sounds kinda fishy. I can't really see him being awarded anything if he was stupid enough to try. link from a reputable source?

Only thing similar to that I can think of is the brian night caselink. Which I think he deserves to be charged because even if you defend him getting into his truck ramming the guy who stole his atv off the road, then proceed to shoot him. Can you really defend his decision to get all his buds together and hunt the guy down after he got away? its surprising no one got hurt in the hunt.

One less guy breaking into houses.

They better not do anything to the kid.

It's pretty damn sad that people would rather steal, than earn money to buy a computer.

I applaud this man. I truly believe that once you unlawfully step into someones house with mal intent of either stealing, hurting or destroying, your rights, priviledges and life are automatically forfeited

I have this now on layaway at my local store for home defence. Good...bad...i'm the one with the gun!

Remington_870_Knoxx_Tactical_A.jpg

Not much good on layaway, you need something today. SD has the M4A3 $623.95 today.

They make smaller holes in the walls and can be patched up easily unlike your current weapon of choice.

Freezebyte needs to read more books on survivalism. Anyhow it also depends on the ammo you use. I wouldn't recommend fullblown on a shotgun with drywall since you might injure someone else. Now I know how they broke the wall on those movies.

If I remember correctly it was Hammurabi who implement the Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth Law. Since then, there were no more thieves in his Empire. Babylon. Never mind Wikipedia which is a POS in ancient matters, as usual.

In some states (VA for example), I believe you have to prove that you "tried to escape" or were unable to before taking said intruder down; or at least that you had to protect others in your household who were still asleep/unable to escape when you gun the idiot down.

A friend of mine who is a cop here told me once "but it doesn't matter, b/c by the time the police get there he WILL have one of your kitchen knives in his hand. Right? Right?"

Either way, I keep 2 shotguns (1 on each side of the bed) and an AK-47 on my side as well. Intruders break into my home at your own risk.........You will hear no swish of the samurai sword. Only my safety clicking off followed by a boom.

Just an FYI, VA is not one of the states with a duty to retreat, assuming that you have the right to be where you are(such as your house or public property). However there are some states with duty to retreat, which I agree is complete BS.

Also I would recommend to anyone intending to keep a weapon in the home for self defence; look up all pertinent laws for your state to find out ahead of time just when you're legally justified to use it. Also get a weapon that fits the job. I mile long shotgun with a million tacti-cool gadgets hanging off the end isn't nearly as useful as a shorter barrel shotgun. Rifles are very effective, but a bad choice in high density housing such as town-houses and apartments due to just how far a bullet can travel, and how many innocent people may be in its path.

Blades can be very effective, but if he has a gun across the room from you, and all you have is a nice ~1 foot blade, you're in for a world of hurt.

GG for living in Texas. I sleep with a Taurus PT-24/7 9mm and a PT845 .45 under my pillows. You can be guaran-damn-teed that if you break into my house, you are getting one to the head, period. If you are in my house, my life > yours, imo. I'm not retreating or stopping to find out why you are there.

It is at best foolish to underestimate the stupidity human beings are capable of.

That's the good ol' USA. Victim defends himself, and is investigated for criminal charges...

"Authorities are determining whether the student will face criminal charges, Guglielmi said."

And your neighbor's walls. And their neighbor's walls...

Yeah, high velocity rifle round, brilliant home defense weapon.

Good riddance to the burglar.

Umm, like I said before, I don't have neighbors to worry about, 1/2 mile to my nearest neighbor. Frankly I would be suprised if a 5.56 would penetrate my stone exterior walls.

holy shit. why would you lunge at someone with a sword.

Pick one reason from below.

1) He thought the sword was a fake.

2) He was high on drugs.

3) He thought he could disarm the student. (Looks like the jokes on him, cause he got disarmed himself))
4) He was desperate and he figured the student wouldn't have the guts to take him down.

5) All of the above.

Do keep in mind that this was a class A scum bag with 29 priors and had been in and out of the system his whole life, so he could have easily 10 times more offences that he was never caught for.

Actually the same happens in there in the USA also.

Years ago. A guy was breaking into a house, tried to come through the skylight in the kitchen. He slipped and fell coming in and broke his leg on the counter top. He sued and won something like $40,000 or $50,000. Another case, a man and wife woke to find a burgar in their bedroom getting ready to stab them in their sleep. The husband pushed the guy away, grabbed his gun from his nightstand and shot the guy dead as he tried to lunge at him with the knife. Sister of the dead guy sued for wrongful dead and won money.

Never understand how stupid ass lawsuits like this make it though.
