I know the year isn’t over yet but this guy is an early candidate for Stupid Computer Thief of the Year. The burglar should have brought an accomplice to give him a hand. Oops, did I say “give him a hand:D You can thank [H] reader Jessie Lawrence for the link on this one.

When authorities arrived, they heard calls for help and for police, he said. They discovered a suspected burglar with a severed left hand and severe lacerations to his upper body, Guglielmi said.

Samurai - 1, Robber - 0:p

yeah we were talking about this in another thread. What sucks is the guy was being held over this.

Sucks for the guy with the sword. He might get charged with something even though he was protecting himself and property.

What do you expect form Maryland, trust me I am dealing with them on legal matters and they are the worst.

If I had to guess, it might be stemming more from the fact that he had a weapon on campus.

I guess I agree with you on that, but the campus of JHU is not that big and when it comes to collector swords, that's a Grey area.

By the article, they were robbed monday, then it seems as though the robber went back tues for more stuff?

It didn't state that he actually lived on campus anywhere. It merely said that he and several other students lived in the home, maybe they had a place off campus which would mean that it is none of JHUs business to tell him he can't have a weapon.

I don't know about "stupid computer thief of the year" but I think he wins Dead stupid computer thief of the year easily. I like the hands off approach the students used to subdue him.

Four on one and the suspect had no weapon. Self defense my ass.
The guy with the sword took the opportunity to slash the guy up.

The burglary suspect had been released from prison Saturday, Guglielmi said.

Fuck it, never mind.

Bwahaha, hands-on approach to hands off.

All I have to say is

I applaud this man. I truly believe that once you unlawfully step into someones house with mal intent of either stealing, hurting or destroying, your rights, priviledges and life are automatically forfeited

I have this now on layaway at my local store for home defence. Good...bad...i'm the one with the gun!

Doesn't matter, you're on my property messing with my own, particularly if you've forced entry. It's too easy for someone to have a concealed weapon, and to be in that close proximity, with the obvious intention of violating my rights. Castle doctrine.

(The man "lunged" at the students, and the student with the sword defended himself, severing the man's left hand and cutting his upper body, Guglielmi said.)

Sounds like he went all "Quad Damage" on the burglar's ass...nothing left but gibs and quivering flesh!

In some states (VA for example), I believe you have to prove that you "tried to escape" or were unable to before taking said intruder down; or at least that you had to protect others in your household who were still asleep/unable to escape when you gun the idiot down.

A friend of mine who is a cop here told me once "but it doesn't matter, b/c by the time the police get there he WILL have one of your kitchen knives in his hand. Right? Right?"

Either way, I keep 2 shotguns (1 on each side of the bed) and an AK-47 on my side as well. Intruders break into my home at your own risk.........You will hear no swish of the samurai sword. Only my safety clicking off followed by a boom.

I'm not sure if this bill actually passed, but at least prior to it, MD still had the requirement that you had a duty to retreat, hopefully when this is all hashed out, it shows that the student couldn't retreat because of his location in the house at the time or that he was in physical danger when the attacker lunged at him.

Not much good on layaway, you need something today. SD has the M4A3 $623.95 today.

They make smaller holes in the walls and can be patched up easily unlike your current weapon of choice.

I'd politely beg to differ in regards to home defense. A 5.56 could run through your wall, through the neighbor's, and plink an unwanted 3rd party. That's why I'd never get my AK out unless I heard multiple bad guys and wanted the intimidation factor that only big ugly can bring. The 40 round mag ices the ugly cake...but I still run the risk of putting a round through one of my neighbors.

That shotgun isn't going to have that kind of distance. A good 870 and some 00 buck and you're all set to rid the home of any bad guys...

Guy got what he deserves. If someone breaks in my house, they are entering my domain and I will defend myself and my family without question or hesitation.

Well im sorry, but I typically don't have $500+ in cash lying around. And the holes in the walls greatly depends upon the ammo or in this case, buckshot size you use. You can buy reduced recoil buckshot for HD purposes or go with buckshot 4BK to reduce chances of over penatration through walls for apartment dwellers like me

Pardon my intrusion guys, but I'd like to show you something that you may find pretty interesting...

Having said that, I'm _Really_ craving some Kendo lessons right now ;)

And what exactly is a tilted japanese reality show going to teach us about sword vs a gun? Especially a high caliber 50 cal machine vs a stationary sword target with a sharp edge that no human being on earth would be cable of weilding to defend against a machine gun, let alone slice the bullets in mid air? There is no matrix, there is no farking alternative reality, there is no FUCKING SPOON!

Flawless victory!

I gotta give props to the student. The guy lunged, the student protected himself and those around him.

While I can't youtube at work, I get the jist from your response :)

If it's some sword magically cutting a bullet in 1/2, then good luck getting that thing in front of 9 pieces of shot from the old 00 buck.

And yes, good point Freeze. Being in a house, I have the luxury of going 00 on intruders. That would be a bit much for apt dwellers....

Buck slug buck slug buck slug.

Point it at the door and go wild.

You lunge, you die. Simple. What is the DA quibbling about in even attempting to charge the student that defended himself? The fact that he used a sword to do it? Preposterous. If he had a knitting needle in his hand and stabbed him to death in defense would that be any different? How about shooting him? Is the DA quibbling about the type of death or how it was dealt? Stupid. Any criminal in the commission of a crime shouldn't expect any rights to be endowed to him, even in a system that presumes innocence.

read this yesterday.. been in similar situation twice in my life (red handedly catching a thief), albeit with firearms so I can relate.

samurai sword + theives + one less idiot to corrupt the gene pool = FTMFW!!!!

Only thing they were missing was the video footage.

Someone give this guy a medal.. or some chinese stars or something

I agree with ya on that. Gotta love the 870. Lock and load and blast them bastards!

My thoughts exactly ;)

Not just 1, but 7 .50 cal bullets before it snapped in half... gotta love japanese steel (L)

What I mean is, as much as I like big guns (AK 47 FTMFW!!), IMHO I'd pick a samurai sword over any gun for house defense, any time of the day. I mean, it's not like burglars with UZIs are breaking into houses now, and the only way to defend yourself is with an AK-47 and planting some C-4 all around your house...

Besides, in case somebody _Does_ break into your house, you may not have enough time to get your gun (y'know, keeping them away from children and stuff), instead you can just keep your samurai sword on a shelf or rack in your living room (far far away from a child's reach)...

Just my $0.02

Not I, but that's my .01 worth  That's a mighty inviting weapon for said intruder to pick up before he waltzes into your bedroom. But then again, I don't have kids so my Remingtons are like bed posts. I'd feel naked without them....

And while the sword thing is neat, it's also a bit silly. If someone's shooting at you with a .50 cal, they're either on top of a humvee, or a 1/2 mile to a mile away, grinning at you like your his favorite Christmas present through that fat scope of his...I've shot a Barrett once, and the brass on my desk is enough to leave people speechless....Need an arm removed? Want to see what it's like to get cut in 1/2 with 1 shot? give good old Mr. .50 Cal a call; he will oblige :)
