gotcha, although unfortunately mine does not have an optical drive as it was removed to save space by design :p So its not an option for me, but I'd love to have a super compact and quite speedy laptop just a bit larger than a netbook :) I can comfortable watch movies on it while flying. My biggest complaint is startup time, which I optimized a bit using MS config but I know it would be a TON faster with a 160GB Solid state. Unfortunately by the time the prices on them are reasonable I fear my notebook will be completely obsolete.

Nice laptop :) You'll have to pay ~$450 for a 160gb or get lucky and find a 120gb OCZ Vertex for ~$300ish...

The other option would be to run intel 80gb SSD as the internal drive and a 1tb (or 500gb) WD Passport velcroed to the top of the laptop with the usb cable managed down the side of the screen. Yeah, it's a little bump but I think it is worth it due to the huge speed increase.

I just don't see the stupidity making sense in the SSD. I mean come on. Shit for storage and so much cost. Who cares if it basically wont fail because its on chips instead of a disc. The price to storage ratio for me or anyone else with general common sense isn't there. My 2 cents of course.

your 2 cents suck bro.

most all of us are using ssd's as OS/program drives. do you seriously have more than 80GB/160GB for that? As it is with conventional hard drives, I partition the os drive on the inside of the drive. And I use less than 20-30GB for sure.

And SSD reliability? I suppose in a notebook environment, where I usually don't have hard drives last more than 2 or 3 years (damned hitachi 7k100's). But do some reading and you'll see these current ssd's won't last forever.

I think you need your eyes opened by the x25's random read/write vs the velociraptor.

If they made a 40GB x25m, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

My os drive on my server is 120gig has no partitions and Vista x64 Ultimate along with everything else under the sun leaving me with 27 gigs of roaming space give or take as its also used for all my downloading. So today I've been busy so Haven't gotten anything off of it on disk so I'm normally running around 60 gigs free space. I just can't see spending 200+ for 80 gigs of space. I don't even use velocoraptors I think they are way too expensive for what they are. Its a hard drive it needs to run an os and any other applications anyone sees fit. It doesn't need to run any land speed records who really cares how fast a computer boots up? Mine stays on 24/7 and I never have a lick of problems out of the drives in it.

you do know that hard drives are today's bottlenecks

if you ever use a bud's computer with a x25, you'll be getting one next day

To each their own but this thread is about the intel X25M G2 being available at Mwave, not about why you think they're stupid, or why you don't want it in your server, that's just way off topic.

Well I see the benefit for a laptop as these are obviously lighter...more durable...etc. But as far as for desktop use, 80GB just doesn't cut it..and $249 for 80GB is just absurd.

From his post I can tell that scgt has never used a recent SSD.

Also, just the fact that he has 100gb worth of applications makes me question anything he says. Talk about some serious bloat...

120-60(Which is my average freespace)=60gb of used OS Drive space. This is vista which is almost 8gig, office 07, photoshop cs4 master collection, Bryce 5, 3DS Max, Several less known 3d applications, Loads of encoding and converting programs, A nice collection of docs over the years, burning software, Several home design applications, and Mitchell on Demand just to name a few. I have 10 gigs alloted of vram for editing purposes. If you have the available space why not use it?

Its nice to see above I'm not the only person that thinks its absurd to spend this kind of coin on something that will be 1/8 the cost in a year or so. People and their fad bandwagons always have to try out the new toys as soon as they hit the shelves. Wow all those xbox 360 owners for example with the wonderful rrod. I just got my 360 last September after all the crap has been fixed. Don't worry everyone will see in a year what they paid so much for will be so little in a short enough time where you will wish you never jumped on the wagon to begin with. :D Or then again maybe you were brought up on the rich side of town and had everything hand fed to you and Real life and bills along with this great economy don't effect you. Tough to say.

My Mwave order is going to be delivered tomorrow as per UPS. I am preparing my PC for the radical change

I think this is the third thread about these drives you've graced with a lovely pile of poop. We get it, you won't buy it.....there are plenty of us that will.

I'm running Windows 7 RC 64-bit on an old IDE 160GB Seagate 7,200rpm drive on a IDE to SATA converter right now. I think I'm gonna tough it out until Windows 7 retail is released, then I'll look for a deal on a decent SSD. I would really prefer something at least 128GB-160GB sized. By the end of October there should be some deals in this size range.

You are not exactly run of the mill average pc user, for most, 80gb system drive would be sufficient. As for the depreciation in value, it happens to EVERYTHING computer-related (with a few rare exceptions). If one is to follow your logic, we should all be sitting on P4 computers

Lol agreed. SSD's are amazing. I can't wait to get one. One of my bosses uses one and after using his computer for a bit my computer looks like a god damn snail.

Also, we bought a few 160GB SSDs for our company servers. Makes VM apps blazing fast. Is the increase in speed worth the cost? You bet in a production environment. :D

Just the fact that you said "a nice collection of docs over the years" makes me realize we are dealing with a novice. Why would you keep docs on your boot drive? If you list this glaring mistake then obviously there is a lot of filler you could move to a secondary storage drive. Also you say that this $250 80gb Intel X25 G2 SSD will be $31.25 within a "a year or so." That is absolutely hilarious. :D Any of us that have a clue have been running our desktops with a small boot partition for years... this just makes it even faster and more secure by using a small SSD in place of our OS/boot partition. If this doesn't work for you because you haven't "cleaned house" in years then take an afternoon, delete the bloat, move it to another drive, or at least stop trashing threads with nonsense.

As far as you not being a standard PC user -- I tend to agree. It seems like you should be more attuned to how your PC runs and operates being that you do so much design on it. SSDs speed up scratch space so much it's almost laughable to think that a "CAD designer" is bashing them. My friend who does extensive 3d modeling bought two 160gb intel SSDs when they were over $600 each and said it was the best investment he's ever made to his design studio.

You are looking at this in the wrong light.

It's $249 for 6600 random write iops.

That is $.04/iop

Your 1TB 7200rpm@ $600 drive is maybe 200 iops ?
That is $0.30/iop

No one else on this forum keep a backup of their user folder on disk? I have client files out the ass that I need easy access to. Which in turn is the nice collection of docs over the years. Of course with my own personal docs included in that. When a client calls me about something that was done in the past I don't have time to fumble around in a bunch of disks while holding my thumb in my ass in the process. I need to search and find right that with said client on the phone. I don't need to put them on hold while I swap disks out for 15-20 minutes trying to find which a-e or m-s or what ever disks I have. Thats a bad business practice.

This computer was reloaded less then 6 months ago so its not cluttered with trash and honestly doesn't need a cleaning. From fresh format and reinstall of all the apps I use whether it be for my side work or personal use leave me with around 60-70gigs free space. So Off that figure there is no trash on my computer that needs to be cleaned. I just have to work what has been gathered as of late.

A novice I am not. Know what I'm talking about? Yes. Common sense? Yes The price per space issue isn't there. Speed? Now maybe the speed is there, but I've been working on 7200 speed drives for years and have no problems. with it. Your work is done only as fast as you can actually do it. Faster accessing times mean nothing to me with what I do.

CAD you say? I'm not a CAD designer. Maybe getting your facts straight would be a smart thing and stop bashing other members of the forum because of their thoughts. To each his own. I voiced my opinion on the price to size aspect and automatically start getting bashed by several users in this thread which is bullshit. I would hate to be your neighbors if you act out like this on an open forum.

This is an open forum correct? So we are allowed to act on the constitution and use freedom of speech correct? Eh oh well to each his own.

There's a whole storage section in the [H] forums for you to tell us your likes n dislikes. This is a Hot Deals section, where we are specifically trying to acquire said product(s) at the cheapest price possible, not debate them.

You just proved you are are a novice with this comment. I suppose you could have a motherboard that only supports one SATA port? Let me break it down for you in a simple matter:
- Operating system and installed programs on SSD
- All other storage (documents, music, movies, backups, etc etc) on a secondary spindle drive

For example:
Drive 1: SSD: Windows 7, Program Files
Drive 2: 1TB 7200rpm: documents, music, movies, etc etc

If there is a huge document that you are currently working on -- feel free to move it to your SSD drive to speed up access.

I assume you need a refresher in your acronyms -- it's OK there are a lot of acronyms and I can't expect everyone to know what they are:

CAD - software use in art and architecture and engineering and manufacturing to assist in precision drawing

You list that you have "Several home design applications." Maybe that was another mistake? I assume if you do not do any CAD design then that is another 10gb or so that you can do away with.

So sorry I probably should note that your arguments don't make much sense and I will not make that mistake again.

Is it my imagination or is every single thread by scg1 and ps3 trolling shit they shouldnt be in? If you dont want to buy the drive, DONT FUCKING BUY IT. But stop shitting up a HOT DEAL thread. I bought my vertex120 when they were still over 400 bucks and its one of the best upgrades i have made in years.

I changed my mind, I might have to jump my raptor's S.M.A.R.T is detecing a drive failure (Again).

I just don't have the cash for the 160GB drive :(

Er, your second calculation is weird.

1TB 7200rpm is around $85, at around 200 iops gives you $0.40/iop

that should read $60 for the tb, not 600. then it all maeks sense

85 is average pricefor 1tb nowadays. you'll see 60 frequently

I just recieved mine on my porch.

I ordered an "R5", but recieved a "C1" - no retail packaging. No biggy, just a heads up as yours may be the same way...

Well it is a hot deal thread I am allowed to voice my opinion on why the deal isn't hot and is super cold.

I am just stating that the average desktop user doesn't benefit from a SSD drive at all...especially since an 80GB like this one is going to cost $249, and when you can get a 1TB 7200rpm drive for say $60.

It doesn't eliminate loading times, and is only 5-10 seconds faster loading windows. Games see no benefit at all. Just sayin' it ain't hot for 99% of the people out there...only the 1% of professionals that need fast access times...which is usually for people who have these drives running as servers...and 80GB is awfully miniscule to even be running in a server.

People who use servers use SLC drives (or they should)
