The following was copied & pasted from Fatwallet.com, surprised nobody posted this yet. It's for students only, but it works great. Just downloaded Win7 x64 Pro and XP Pro SP3 as part of the $32 package.

This is a follow up to an old thread that I can not find (apologies to that OP, it was a great posting).

If you are a student in some course that is related to the IEEE (such as Engineering, IT, Science) then you can join their student membership (~$16 for 1/2 year, ~$30 for full year) and have free access to Microsoft educational alliance software.

http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/students/branchresources/microsoftofferstudents.html

I already used this to get office and XP for my student wife.

I just checked in and Windows 7 Pro (both 32 bit and 64 bit ) RELEASE TO MANUFACTURING versions (i.e. final versions) are avliable RIGHT NOW without delay (!) for you to download (this is ahead of general retail release).

There are also the beta and release candidate versions there too, avoid them as they wills top working at some point next year.

Remember you get to download one of each, each with a unique serial number.

You add to cart (free), get a serial number then download a small ~400kb program that manages the download. I am downloading right now, so can't verify the type of download, but should be good, previously things like XP were ISO images so pretty straight forward to use.

Warning - the serial numbers may only work once, so do yourself a favor and image your install using the built in Microsoft system wide image/back-up to an external drive for safekeeping.

Edit:
Those who jumped on the IEEE membership offer a while ago can download today if they did out their login details and the website from that confirmation email they got after joining.

Anyone joining for new will probably have to wait a few days for IEEE membership confirmation then another 7-10 for the academic software registration info.
- Don't flame , this is still many weeks ahead of general release for a great price.

Edit 2:
Downloads are ISO images.

Edit 3:
I tired Windows 7 Pro RTM (32bit) - it installed and activated just fine. Imaged the install to an external hard drive using the built in system image facility.
Retraction - I did not get office using this offer, I got confused with "the ultimate steal" education offer.

Edit 4:
On the software drop down list you are looking for

* Windows 7 Professional (x64) - DVD (English)
Windows 7 Professional (x86) - DVD (English)

Nice find.

I signed up, waiting for the MSDNAA email to come. (it says it will be within 8 days)

2 caveats: Last time I signed up with them it was a hassle getting the student rate. They charged me the student rate online but when my bill came it was the regular individual rate of over $100. They were not at all willing to issue a credit even though I was a grad student in info science at the time. I had to get a chargeback from my bank. Personally, I think technet is the better deal anyway. No idiotic third party to deal with and access to way more software.

A pox on your house IEEE.

I thought this would have been posted last week when it was $16 on IEEE 's site. Enrolled Sunday, got access on Thursday.

I already did this - in fact I had win7 home installed with no key...and managed to get it to do a Windows anytime upgrade to Win7 pro using my IEEE x64 key with some minor hassles

(see this thread if you want to try to do this for some reason)
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1441175&page=9

ACM.org also is offering MSDNAA access now, $16 for a membership, and they get you the key faster. FYI

For some reason, the downloader wouldn't unpack my Win7 ISO properly, took me about 10 downloads to get it right, but it finally worked. About to reformat off of x64 RC now.

Through ACM, where did you find the offer? I just signed up, but for the life of me can't find the offer.

Edit: Nevermind. Can't see it till they process the payment.

damn... I am really tempted to do this just to get a key, even though I am pretty sure my school will give me one, and I have one coming from Intel.... but you can always use more keys...... crappy decisions...

I see that the requirement for student enrollment is half a full load. Now, what is a full semester load? I'm typically take two classes a semester (6-8 hours depending on the classes) since I work full time; do I qualify?

A full load is 12 hours. So you should qualify.

One other thing to note about this is that if you are a student in an IEEE related discipline like Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or even if you aren't, there's a chance your school has an MSDNAA program for you. Where I work we do. In that case, you get a free account from your school. It gets you access to all MS software, including Windows, except for Office.

I'll try it. I'd like to have Win 7 on my desktop and home machine so why not give it a go...

I noticed belatedly a few days ago that my school now has MSDNAA access for software (it didn't 2 years ago). Still, I only spent $16 for IEEE. And I can't access MSDNAA via my school until classes officially start.

i had msdnaa but I graduated
I have a cousin going to a community college? would that work for acm or ieee?

I could really use Windows 7, but I have too much stuff going on right now and I am in only one class this semester, GIS 201.

I'll be in more classes next semester, but I won't need an O/S then.

I emailed them, let's see what they say.

Well, i got my account and Cdkeys from ACM :) . It took less than 4 days for me to register and opt in for msdnaa. Now I need time to install Windows 7 on my machine.

My msdnaa account has win 7 rtm on it. How long will it last, and can it be upgraded to the release later on?

Already got 32bit/64 bit copies for free from the Computer Science department, but if I never need another license or 2 I would sign up for ACM membership

As the OP said, the RTM is the final version. It IS the version you would buy in stores.

So I installed the RTM, everything went as smooth as it did with the RC install. Now to image the drive and then decide on my security setup.

It might be the RTM, but how long is the product key valid? Is it perpetual or will they check if you are a member of the academic version of MSDN every year?

which version of windows 7 RTM is up on the acm msdnaa account? Professional, Ultimate, etc?

I signed up for ACM since I am a comp engineer student. Got 4 keys. in English and french. Signed up on Friday, opt in msdnaa same day, and got the account to download on Saturday.

License is probably only for one copy, i.e. installing the 32-bit and 64-bit versions separately is probably the legal equivalent of installing the same copy on multiple computers.

MSDNAA keys should be valid perpetually, although there are sometimes restrictions on how you can install and use software obtained through MSDNAA.

You get one key for each of the x86 and x64 versions. I downloaded both, got two keys. Only Win7 available is Pro, not Ultimate.

As per the IEEE FAQ:

Q: Can I install my software on two computers at once?
A: Yes, as long as you are the owner of both computers and both are being used for instructional purposes. NOTE: If you require another key for a product you must contact the PA (program administrator) at your school. Your PA's contact email information can be found in the support page. Click on the Support button above. Also, friends, family and colleagues not currently enrolled in a course that is part of an MSDNAA department are not allowed to access or use the software available from this website. (For examples of appropriate usage see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/academic/program/usageguide/default.aspx)

Q: I have a new computer now, how can I re-install my software?
A: You are allowed to install the software more than once based at the discretion of the program administrator and the software distribution method chosen (i.e. Download, Cd Check Out). Note: if you purchase a Mail Order product (CD media sales method of distribution) you will need to go through the Microsoft Customer Care Center for support: 1-800- 936-5700 in North America/ World Wide 1-800-249-8314. If you have further questions, please contact the PA (Program Administrator) at your school. Your PA's contact email information can be found in the support page. To view this information, please click on the Support button above.

Q: If my download times out or I get disconnected, how do I continue my software download and installation?
A: If you were in the middle of downloading the software itself, there will be a shortcut icon saved on your desktop that will allow you to resume your download. Double-click on the icon to begin again. If you don't see the shortcut icon on your computer desktop, you can request a re-installation by contacting your program administrator.

Q: Does the license (or "key") permanently unlock the software?
A: No - the key allows you to install the software once. If you need to re-install the software, you will need to contact the PA (Program Administrator) at your school. Your PA's contact email information can be found in the support page. To view this information, please click on the Support button above.

Q: What am I paying for?
A: You are entitled under your department's MSDNAA agreement to download or order software through CD Check-out at no charge. If you choose to have CD media shipped to your home, you pay a small fee to cover the cost of the CD media itself plus shipping and handling. You are not paying any fee to "license" the software, as the software is already fully licensed under your department's MSDNAA agreement.

Nice, downloading the x64 and x86 versions of Win 7 Pro right now. I still get free MSDNAA access through my university that I graduated from over a year ago.

Just to make everyone aware that Windows 7 Ultimate really doesn't offer anything useful above Win 7 Pro, unless you like language packs.

You can always use the school account to leach more keys. :D
