Question about subwoofers:

Would replacing the 30+ year old 12" speaker in my DLK Subwoofer with a new one significantly change my sub output / sound?

Any recommendations on replacement speakers?

Also, What is the difference between subs designed for cars and HT subs? Is the difference merely cosmetic?

Thanks in advance!

How do you know what is better if you don't know what you've got?

He didn't mention it here but in another thread (here) that it's a passive sub, driven by a sub amp in his receiver.

I think it would be a good idea to find out something about the speaker before doing anything to it. I know that some people prize some older speakers because of sound and construction quality that costs significantly more to obtain in newer equipment.

Yep, my apologies, there is no amp on my sub :)

the speaker can handle 100W @ 8ohms (if that is the correct way of putting it). I was just thinking a HT sub speaker may be able to handle the lowest lows a little better. I think the rolloff for my old sub speaker is around 35-40 hz...

I think my predicament stems down to the fact that i want loud, deep bass, and i was wondering if replaceing the speaker would get me that. I don't know if it is a good idea to rip the 30 year old speaker out from its original cab though.. It is sealed and in great shape. the speaker itself is also in wonderful condition! maybe i need to look into a different sub..
