Straight from the horse’s mouth, Valve is not even bothering with the PS3 anymore. No real reason was given for the lack of PS3 support but one can only assume that it is the disdain Gabe Newell has for the console that lead to this decision.

Keighley: Are you guys working on PlayStation 3 here now, trying to understand it, trying to get better at it?

Gabe: Uh, no. Not in any real way.

Valve's games are designed and meant to be experienced on the PC.

So i guess Play Station isnt bothering making any of there games PC either I assume? Id kill for whatever there solder of fortune game was called..To bad consoles dont convert over to make more money on the Best Selling console games only...:(

I think that is representative of the difficulties in coding and porting games for the PS3. John Carmack I think is of the same opinion.

Great news, imo.

Valve is good at what they do. Sony hasn't been good at what they do, since the re-release of the PS2.

Good maybe Valve will stay true to it's roots. PC first, Consoles second. I know iD kind of broke away from that. Maybe the demise of the PS3 will push other developers into putting more effort into PC games as well

Gabe is the last true PC developer. TF2 is the only game that's fun.

i read that he was going to hire a whole team to develop for ps3 again, now they are not? geesh .

tf2 is amazing all over again after this weeks patches. anyone get a hat? do they give you stat bonuses?

Sony made a system that is hard to develop for during a time where rising development costs means more sequels and safe bets and less originality. Is *ANYONE* truly surprised that developers are just saying "fuck that - we want easy development"?

A friend in the industry say's its still a coding nightmare. Seriously hope Sony withers away because of the PoS 3. Now only if Xbox and Nintendo can join forces somehow...

Watch the episode of Gametrailers TV where the quote came from: http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/67&ch=1&sd=0?ep=67&ch=1&sd=0

The reason Gabe gave is that they only have enough internal staff to support the PC and creating ports for the 360. The PS3 port of The Orange Box was farmed out to an external EA studio and they seriously screwed it up. Valve decided that they want to do all future console work internally, but without further expansion they can't also create ports for the PS3, so no PS3. Expanding to support it seems like a complete non-priority right now.

Seems like for any company doing cross-platform work (Rage for instance), getting it to work on the PS3 as well as the PC and 360 is a lot more effort since the system is structured so differently (many powerful cores alongside a weaker GPU with less texture memory, versus the more traditional fewer cores with a more powerful GPU). Its why PS3 exclusives look incredible (some better than anything on the 360) while ports look either on par with or worse than what is on the 360.

Doesn't affect me either way, I play all my Valve games on the PC. :)

First couple responses in this thread really seem to be missing the mark a little. This isn't PC vs Consoles. If it was, the question would have been in relation to "consoles." But it wasn't. It was about a console.

John deffy got the same opinion, he is just forced to work with a hard to code @.
Lack of memory box.
Lack of HDR+AA without w/o box.

This is because.
Making a lil engine for all platforms(Pc-Mac,Linux,Windows, PS3 and the 360) will profit more.
Meaning.

Game company xxxxxx buys the engine, they can then release the game on all platforms they like, whereas unreal engine is only for windows or xbox360.
Carmack have demoed id tech 6 or 7(cant remember the number100%) on ps3, 360 and pc,
I think I can tremember he did a mac aswell meaning a port to linux would take him about 2-3 weeks due to many many simularities in driver structure, graphical manager(X) is the same.

But he did say its hard with the limitations of the PS3, i dont blame gabe, not the best engine dev team, and a hard console.

Which is why they're fast-tracking the sequel for Left 4 Dead, a game that was a massive hit on the 360.

Don't get me wrong, Valve is one of the main reason why PC gaming is still relevant to me. Microsoft has pretty much abandoned pushing the PC as a gaming platform, and without Steam I might nearly be done with it. I'm thankful that Valve created a platform that makes PC gaming easier and more convenient than its ever been. Obviously all of their games are great.

All that said, they're still a business. While Valve and Blizzard are the two big companies truly keeping PC gaming relevant, Valve knows that the console market is very important and they're not going to step aside and see those potential sales go away, hence the massive marketing push we saw by EA for Left 4 Dead on the 360.

+1 I'm still loving TF2

I don't own a PS3 so this is a non-issue for me. If dropping PS3 game development helps Valve improve upon the monolithic game titles they've produced so far, I'm all for it.

I own a PS3, but Valve games are played on my PC.
My PS3, basically just F@H 24/7.

There was another article in which Gabe reference Half-Life 2 Episode 3 ... they need to get on that and give me a reason to upgrade my PC :)

The console VS PC war needs a resurgence. Everyone has mostly kept quiet in the name of playing nice but F that. PC for lyfe!!!

If they stay on the current gen of the Source engine for it, a PC upgrade will not be necessary unless you are sporting a P4 and a Nv 5700

Sadly HL2 runs beautifully on this computer but TF2 performance is abysmal because of the 1.83 c2d. I've never figured out why the same engine runs so much different between the two games (or why TF2's multicore support is so useless.)

Solder of Fortune? Is it gold based instead of tin/silver?

I have quite a few consoles... nothing super new. Newest are Gamecube and PS2.

But I game on the PC a lot more, yet I don't think we should only have PC or consoles.

There is a place for both.

And for younger players I think consoles can be a lot better. Especially since you can't really get viruses or accidentally stumble upon mature material on a console.

Consoles can even be used by people that should never be allowed to use a computer (99.9% of the populace).

I've lost almost all respect for Valve. Not only after the whole L4D crap but now they're being lazy programmers just because PS3 isn't like PC, boohoo. Mr. Gabe is also constantly running his fat mouth. They also horrible with delays and setbacks and can't keep their schedule strait.

You'd rather for them to release an incomplete game (think FarCry2)?

uh, no1 has had respect for valve ever since the golden gabe statue

but we still love valve more than our mothers

i love valve. i dont even game any more except for tf2 and l4d. ii should probably try mirrors edge or something when i get back from vacation. i am a little upset with them for not releasing more maps. theres only so many times you can play the same 4 campaigns before it gets tedious.

That does not seem an inflammatory statement to me.

Valve is PC centric, always has been. That they would not bother with a particular console, that happens to be the worst seller this gen, seems a natural thing.

Hey, perhaps we can pin this one on MS. A "Gabe hates the PS3 cause MS pays him." sort of thing. j/k
L4D2 coming out so soon is not a big deal to me, but on the delays, I am with you. Valve time is so well known it even has a wiki page.

After their success I'll cut Gabe some slack. Valve is a savvy company, they need to grow and they see a big opportunity to fund that growth with L4D2 on 360/PC. They have created arguably the number one digital distribution system for games on PC and launched several fantastic games over the years. They are generally well polished and playable out of the gate unlike some developers games.

I've got a lot of respect for what they have accomplished. I just wished they would wrap up the HL-2 story arc.

There is nothing lazy about not devoting massive amount of time to develop for a poorly designed console, purposely made hard to program for, with the smallest market share. Its called being smart.

I'm sure it's so hard to develop for. I'm sure it's completely impossible to learn. That's probably why companies like Insomniac have 3 disc based and 1 downloadable game released on it already.

Excellent comparison - a company that exclusively develops games for sony, compared to a company that's been a PC only dev for years. The PC dev can, without almost any effort, just port their games to the 360 because of the architecture. It has almost no external cost. Sony is the one who decided to make an architecture that does not have that feature. Valve also doesn't develop for nintendo for the same reason. Big mystery.

But yeah, it's exactly like insomniac.

Doesnt bother me that they arent going to make games for it. I have never been a fan of theirs.

Also, this guy is like a 10 year old kid trying to program an entire video game in c++ or something. He loves the idea of it, but then when he sits down to do it, and gets knocked on his ass and overwhelmed, he whines and threatens to move on.

Nobody was bitching about Xbox user base when it only had 23 million sold. Why at 23 million sold does all of a sudden the PS3 have a small user base not worth developing for?
