windows 7 pricing.

Good news if its true. Hopefully those prices aren't just promo prices. A $50 upgrade from Vista is extremely cool. It would be pretty hard to accuse Microsoft of gouging at that price.

Vista Ultimate users should get free upgrades to Windows 7 do to getten' jipped on all those "Ultimate Extras" ..or lack thereof

It will be the end of piracy for sure.

No it won't. It could cost $1 and people would still pirate it saying that they refuse to have to put up with activation or any type of DRM and thus justify piracy that way. There's always an excuse to do the wrong thing.

The 50 dollars would be for the upgrade version and not the full version, right?

The way I read it is that it $50 for current Vista owners. The article didn't mention upgrade pricing from XP. My guess is that consumer XP based systems aren't really going to be much of a market for upgrades to 7. The bulk of Windows sales come from new machines.

Too bad I'm stuck. My Vista Home Premium is 32-bit, and I'm done with x86 for good. I wouldn't mind if the let me upgrade my x64 Ultimate to W7 Home x64.

Computerworld - A leaked memo from Best Buy claims that the retail chain will pre-sell Windows 7 upgrades for as little as $49.99 starting June 26, a technology enthusiast site reported today.

On Friday morning, Engadget posted an image of what it said was an internal Best Buy memo that outlined the company's plans for Windows 7, which Microsoft has announced will go on sale starting on Oct. 22.

The memo, which dubbed Windows 7 as more than just a "Vista that works" operating system, said that Best Buy would kick off pre-sales of Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional for $49.99 and $99.99, respectively, beginning June 26. The promotional prices will be good through July 11, the memo added.

Those prices are considerably lower than prices for similar Vista upgrades. An upgrade edition of Vista Home Premium, for example, lists for $129.95, and sells at online outlets such as Amazon.com for about $95. Vista Business, the edition closest to Windows 7 Professional, lists for $199.95 and sells on Amazon.com for $188.

Microsoft has been touting Windows 7 Home Premium as the default version for consumers, and Professional as the de facto choice for businesses that don't pay Microsoft for a Software Assurance licensing plan.

The Best Buy memo also appeared to confirm that Microsoft, computer makers and retailers will launch the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program in three weeks.

"Best Buy will begin a Technology Guarantee June 26, which guarantees customers a free Windows 7 operating system with PC purchase between June 26 and the Windows 7 launch day," the memo said. "Computers running Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate qualify for the upgrade as of June 26. This includes nearly all of our computers in the assortment, except for a couple of them."

The memo's dates and upgrade paths match what TechARP, a site that has repeatedly nailed Microsoft plans before they go public, had revealed as early as January 2009. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it would provide "special deals" on Windows 7 upgrades to buyers of Vista PCs before the new operating system launches, but declined to divulge any details, such as the launch date.

Today, the company kept mum. "We're continuing to work with our retail and OEM partners to provide Windows 7 Upgrade Option programs and other offers to consumers interested in experiencing Windows 7," a spokeswoman said in an e-mail. "We're excited to share additional details regarding these programs soon, but do not have additional details to announce at this time."

According to Best Buy, customers can place orders for Windows 7 on its Web site starting June 26, but copies won't ship until October.

Who the hell bought ultimate for the ultimate extras? People bought ultimate because it got you the business features AND the home media features in one OS.

I've refused to pay for anything from Microsoft since I bought Windows ME. I am very happy with Windows 7 though and I will for sure buy a copy

honestly i think most people who bought ultimate was to feel good. it was the best version available, and people like to have that.

I use both the features in Vista Business and Vista Home Premium. So for me Vista Ultimate was the best fit for my needs. Most people probably didn't need Vista Ultimate that bought it, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who did.

regardless of the upgrade price, I hope they let people upgrade easier when 7 comes out. I don't run windows right now, however I own a full retail xp pro and a vista home premium 64 retail upgrade. to install and activate vista premium, I need to install and activate xp pro, then install vista. I would hate to have to install xp, activate it, then install vista, activate it, then finally install a windows 7 upgrade.

We'll never know, will we? I mean what's the point of speculating such a thing with no proof whatsoever? Besides, not that many people bought ultimate, IIRC Ultimate was about 7% of Vista sales. Not enough to get worked up about it, for sure.

If true those things should fly off the shelves (get me two copies of Professional please!)

proof? easy. if everyone who bought ultimate was for it's built in features, there would not be complaining about it's lack of extra features after the sale.

I bought Vista Ultimate (32bit) cause it was only 50 bucks haha.... yay for Microsoft's Ultimate Steal program!

we should still get free upgrades regardless of any particular reason why we purchased the "Ultimate" version ..why? ..Because! .. that's why!! .. :p

My opinion...which i know wasnt asked for persay lol...but this is a forum. The thing that sucks most when upgrading OS's isnt the cost or w/e...but its that a clean install is always the best..but then you lose your stuff like Office 2007 that you paid a mint for..and etc.

Also...doesnt matter how much we complain that its not fair that Vista ultimate users dont upgrade for free or w/e....the electronic industry isnt out for our best interests and what feels best for our wallets...they want to get PAID.

That's funny, pretty much every piece of software I've ever paid for has let me reinstall it.

I've only seen the same people complaining about ultimate extras that complain about everything MS does, and even then it's only been a few people on a few different sites. I mean, it's not even close to the number of people who bought Ultimate (small as that is compared to other editions.) Are we finished here then?

While I agree the "Ultimate Extras" were lacking, I didn't buy Ultimate for those reasons. I got it because it's the only version that had all the features I required. Media Center, Remote Desktop and Previous versions.

Did it just automatically let you reinstall your stuff or did you have to call microsoft and tell them your going to need to reinstall it ?

of course this is cheaper, because this is vista with a new theme and a few kinks, so they didn't spend millions developing it.

You can reinstall MS Office as many times as you need. Hell, I've moved mine across 3 builds and then 3 reformats at its current location. FYI

Really? When i have gotten mine it is allowed for installing only on 2 computers. And iv kinda assumed if i uninstall it, upgrade to vista for example, then try to reinstall it (having used the second install on my laptop) that it would consider it a third install, and wont let me.

Right, that's 2 machines at the same time. It's a retail license, so you can transfer it to a new machine/install.

Also, if it was the Ultimate steal, I think it was 2 computers + a mobile device(lappy).

hmmm i understand what your saying...does it automatically detect when you upgrade to say windows 7...that u dont have it anymore so your uses are only at one, then you can install it again and it will become 2 users again? Or what

Apple is gearing up for a fight for you dollars with Snow Leopard as well. It looks like the grass is getting greener on both sides of the fence these days but Apple definitely one-uped Microsoft on price seeing as how there is only one SKU for 10.6. Essentially, that SKU is ultimate and Window 7 Ultimate Upgrade Edition is probably going to be hovering around $150~250.

Edit:
If you can find it.

It's a $30 update because it's a goddamned SERVICE PACK. $50 for an upgrade once every 3 years is far better than a $30 update every year.
