NEC 2490WUXi - The Full Story

Good Find. I am pretty sure the supplier means LG in this case.

I guess that is going to make my 2490 a real classic. Hope it lasts until I can get a OLED.

They will have a agreements to have parts for the production run, which appears to be up in june.
And what about the LP2480zx...¿Is this monitor new, isn't it? On june HP will left its manufacturing? The LP2480zx also has the A-TW pol (according user postings).

Just wanted to update a bit...I ended up buying the 2690 here in France and spectraview ll from the US, the download via a relative in NY, all I needed was the serial number...already had an iOne display 2 puck to calibrate with...works perfectly...and i've been using the screen for nearly a week now...real happy with the color, perfect panel, no problems...happy camper here...thanks for all the info you guys...

I don't know when they would switchover, but when a part is going MD (manufacture discontinued) there would be a lot of warning to the buyers, so they would have a chance to buy a stockpile of them if so desired so it won't run out at the same time for everyone. Which was kind of the point of my original post. This part isn't going to go poof and disappear from every LCD that uses it in the same month. It all depends on the purchase agreements/contracts.

LP2480zx shouldn't be going anywhere in a hurry. The same panel is being used in another model by LG in June too.

After reading a lot of reviews, including this one obviously, I went out out and bought one, non-SV version. It is yet to be delivered (should arrive next week), but hopefully it will be worth the penny. The monitor can still be bought, but retailers rarely have it in stock. So it usually takes a while before you can get your hands on it. I was gonna buy it from Germany in the first place, the shop said they had it in stock, but then I canceled it since I thought it would be harder to deal with whatever problems that might occur.

Have luck for not receive a faulty "nomad" piece with 8 bad blue sub-pixels :D

For everybody may be interested in my problem:
NEC Service called me today, and they told me that they doesn't have new units of this model any more, because the 2490WUXI is at the end of its life cycle... Bad luck... The monitor is still sold on my country (Spain) and another countries too, but a certain stock is reserved for these shops and not for the Service Center (!). They also told me that The 2490WUXi won't be manufactured ANY MORE. So, we have agreed to repair the monitor in the service center...

I can't understand why NEC started the distribution of the 2490 on Europe few months ago and now this monitor will not be produced any more (according to the service center). Is this true or is this an excuse for they don't give me a new unit since the stock "is already reserved" and they don't have any refurbished unit at the moment??

I'am very disappointed with NEC Europe (NEC Iberica, Spain). If they can't face possible failures of this model and they planned to remove it from the market soon, they shouldn't sell it on Europe, because us, customers, we have no choice: either repair it or live with it.

Thats the main reason why ill order SV version, sorry for your bad luck
I think the SV version could have the waves issue too, since this issue is an electronics problem, not a panel problem (at least the foreman believes that). If the 2490WUXi is not produced any more, I'm pretty sure neither the SV version. Essentially are the same model.

The only difference between SV and non-SV is that they stuff a puck and CD into the box. Well that's what NEC tech line told me.

The new abbreviation is born: "eH-IPS A" panel. It would be interesting to know what those letters stand for?

It stands for 'You and Snowdog get to enter Smug Mode.' ;)

Will said:
All other features remain the same as the LCD2490WUXi.

Its an e-IPS panel. Its the same panel as the Europe LG one and the same as what will tip up next month in the U.S and elsewhere, probably as a Dell. LPL has pulled the original panel and in order for NEC to maintain an offering it has to make do.

Still nothing. Shop says it will be ready to be shipped on 3 June. If I am not getting anything on 3rd or 4th, then I will cancel the order and get Eizo or the new 2690. >_<

I ordered mine (non-SV version) on Thursday from CDW, should be arriving on Monday according to tracking info...extremely excited to see this monitor in person at last. Will post on my experiences after I get it set up.

Please someone answer me

EDIT: Does the SV version for (USA) has any advantages over the non sv?
or its just the calibration kit? because for EU the sv monitors are ("hand picked")
guess that doesen't apply in USA sv monitors right? Also if you buy the monitor
from USA you get only that version or you can get EU version in USA also ?
sorry for noob questions ;)

EU monitors are not available in the USA. The SV version just includes the calibration kit. The monitor is identical to the non SV versions. The monitor can cope with the USA's 110V 60Hz electricity and Europe's 240V 50Hz electricity. No converter needed, just a power cable that fits.

Ok thanks alot ! just one more thing, never bought anything from USA i want to know
how much taxes you guys pay for 2490 would i need to pay double taxes ?
e.g lets say 5% in Usa and 10 where i live ?? sorry i got no experience with
this kind of purchases help would be really appericiated thanks!

You will definitely have to pay VAT and any relevant import taxes on the monitor as it arrives in your country. I'm not sure if US sales tax would be waived or not as the monitor would be leaving the USA. It might depend on the state the thing is purchased from.

It's fairly unlikely that you'll be paying US sales tax on the purchase. No online retailer that I know of charges state sales tax unless both the retailer and the customer have a physical presence in that state, which does not apply to you.

Any retailer would probably note any US sales tax before you process your order.

Thanks for the info guys ;)

The monitor won't be purchase online, the friend of mine will bought it in some store in USA
don't know the exact name yet.

Well, it seems I won't be getting my 2490 after all. I've contacted one of the major distributors here in The Netherlands and I was told that NEC has canceled their shipment to them. They should have received about 90 units this week (most of them were for orders), but yesterday it was made clear that it won't happen. I guess it be safe to say now that finding a 2490, at least here in NL, will be pretty impossible.

I could still get 2690 (old model), but it's in silver/white housing. Black version will take 2 weeks, so they said to me. I guess color of the housing doesn't matter that much. And is a non A-TW 2690 really that bad compared to the older model?

Make sure you buy "true" NEC 2490WUXi with A-TW polarizer.

albovin - I just received my 2490WUXi, haven't yet unboxed it, but when I do...how will I know for sure it has the A-TW polarizer? simply check for (lack of) white glow at extreme angles or is there a more definite approach? Or did all 2490WUXi's receive this treatment to the panel?

All 2490wuxi have the polariser. The just announced 2490wuxi2 doesn't have it and that isn't available yet.

Just check the SKU (manual, package, back of the monitor). It should be 60001854.

Hi to all,
I just received it (came from Germany), and started messing around, it rocks, no dead pixels no smudges (I had LCDs with Grey smudges) no wavy Line, simply the Panel is 99% perfect, no Humming !
To anyone please what is the best settings for RGB,contrast and brightness for this LCD (UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON A CALIBRATOR SOMETIME ;) )
my only complain is that at the right side where the the buttons are placed the connection of plastic between the front frame and the back plastic , the plastic (from the back) is 3cm out of place it should be the back plastic should be parrell to the fron frame, not big deal but an LCD at this price I was expecting better qualify .
Any one has any question, will be glad to answer

The 2490 is no doubt a great monitor, but this review reeks of bias. Try to be more objective next time albovin.

I set my 2490 up last night, very pleased so far. This panel is close to perfect, no backlight bleed, no pixel issues, no weird humming noises. The only slight blemish I can find is on a pure black screen, if I look really hard I can see a miniscule mark on the inside of the panel, located in the bottom left area. It kind of looks like a tiny little dog hair and is clearly inside the panel, rather than on the surface. This mark is maybe 1-2mm in length and is only apparent if you really look hard and only on a pure black screen. Given I will never see it in normal usage, i'm inclined to not RMA it based on that. There is a part of me that thinks it should be 100% perfect, given the money I spent but an RMA could produce a monitor with a different issue anyway, so I will most likely keep it. Other than that, I do also notice the IPS "screen-door" effect that people have mentioned in the past...again, only on a pure black background from a pretty extreme angle, it is apparent. This unit most definitely has the A-TW polarizer, absolutely no white glow at all from any angle, perfect in that regard. Still figuring out the OSD and what settings to select, so far have really only adjusted the brightness and played with Color Comp a little. One issue I have to take care of, during use, the monitor is occasionally (seemingly randomly) going into something called IPM power save mode. When it does this, I have to power it off and back on again...weird, anyone have this issue? is this just a default I have to change? Also fired up one of my favorite games last night, and played for around 30 minutes. Did not notice any real lag or anything that would detract from my gaming experience. So far then, it's a 9 out of 10 but I have a lot to play around with yet. Will try and post some pics later on...

Hi omk, glad you got the screen! sorry can't help about the settings,as far as i know
every monitor is difrent so you can't really use others settings try lower down
the brightness at 20% or something thats what we all do on new LCD they
are all way to bright. How is the saturation on it is it really an issue?
to be honest oversaturation its not so bad generally on wide gamut but can't
stand the red white. Also how much does it cost you?

@ Stevecamp don't forget the photos ;)

Thanks psyside
I will post some photos later but at least may you please post your brightness, rgb and contrast , so at least for now, I got it for 1200$ with shipping, no problem with color saturation

Dude i don't have the 2490 yet even if i got it like i said before every monitor is difrent
but guess if you want to you can try using some other 2490 owner settings ;)

The brightness is the only thing you need to lower on every new lcd, the only
setting which can be used on all lcd screens.

Leave contrast always on 50% (unless you want to further decrease brighntess after setting the brightness on 0%). Set brighness to whatever you like and as for RGB - either calibrate the monitor and use the generated profile in colour aware applications or just switch it to the sRGB mode.
