Good evening,

I am looking at buying the HP MSS b/c it is relatively cost effective, stable and expandable.

Once it is set up, will I be able to sync folders to/from the MSS with other computers directly on my network? I have a desktop and a netbook and there is a folder that I want to stay up-to-date synced on all computers. I have a copy of Allway Sync Pro that I am currently using and I greatly enjoy. Will it recognize the WHS storage and sync with it? If not, is there a sync feature built into WHS?

Any information on WHS/Mediasmart would be greatly appreciated, but I am also looking for opinions.

Also, I am aware that WHS offers file sharing as a feature, but I am looking more for file sync and I am not always using my netbook on my network.

Thanks for any help

The MSS and WHS server in general is a repository for your files. There isn't any "sync" per say the files just exist on the server. You open and save them while they are on the server.

If you looking for something to "sync" I guess you could use a free dropbox account and place it on your server. Or you could try to run your sync software on it, if it's 2003 compatible. There might be a sync plug in or something.

Your best bet is to pose this question on the MSS forums they know these boxes inside and out. a few of them work(ed) for HP and either tested or developed the MSS.

So you have a MSS. Can you install programs on it that are compatible with XP/Vista?

Yes I do have one see sig.

If the programs are compatible with Server 2003 then yes you can install them. I don't install anything on my server except plug-ins. There are plug-ins for just about everything. Since WHS limits your C: drive to 20gb There isn't a whole lot of room for extra programs.

the website for allway sync doesnt exactly give a compatibility list, but they do offer an install version and a portable version. i know for a fact allway sync works in both xp and vista 32 and 64 bit, so would it install on WHS? if not, can you run a portable app in WHS?

A cheaper solution for keeping folders in sync on multiple computers is http://getdropbox.com
