Holy crap, it worked! Dead video card, resurrected!

I got a 9800Gt and GTS 320 to try out...

Although they're not dead... just artifacting like crazy -_-

Both were EVGA and the guy didn't register either of them, and lost the receipt on the 9800GT and lied about his purchase date when he registered because he was going to try to make a fake receipt with a friend, in the end he gave up... long story... but now I have them...

This is what being [H] is all about.
I vote a custom title.. "Betty Crockers got shit on me"

The card's already dead... but I have a feeling this is a more consistent / less temperature method...

So if it does work, awesome, if it doesn't... nothing lost... it'll look the same as before...

The danger is in damaging the PCB with elevated temperatures for too long a period. I understand the nothing to lose position. Just offering a little more info for those that might be interested.

Well it half-worked on the GTS320... I doubt they're related but anyways..

It booted up fine, no artifacts, got to windows, found drivers, did some stress testing and saw temperatures were at 80c idle... went wtf? I started ATITool and temps rose to 100c before I shut it off...

I go to check the board and the fan isn't spinning at all...
I disassembled it all when I did it, and well I'm not positive if the fan worked before.

But I think that's still considered a success so far ;) replacing the fan/heatsink isn't all that expensive and I think that's all it needs now...

Now time for the 9800GT :D

... 9800GT works flawlessly now...

I honestly can't believe this worked... but it did... 2 for 2...

Both would artifact during POST and beyond that... now they both don't artifact... the GTS has a bad fan, but that can hopefully be replaced with somethin...
Running ATI-Tool, GPU-Tool, and Furmark on the 9800GT to stress it.. hitting about 85c but that's only at 50% fanspeed (single slot 8800GT cooler, loud as fuck at 100%)
Wonder how long it will last...

Thats awesome. I have a EVGA 8800GTX here thats bad. I got the oven coming up to temperature now.
EVGA wouldn't warranty the card because of not registering it in time. This was my last EVGA purchase and I use BFG now. But is this works I could use it for a backup or test card.

Just remembered I also have a PNY 8800gts that artifacts. Its next.

I did it exactly how OP did... completely stripped down and elevated with some aluminum foil, GPU side facing down.

I don't know what matters and what doesn't but that's how I did it...

Running 3DMark 06 right now... then gonna install it back in my friends system so he can play again. (It's literally been sitting in the corner of my room waiting for a new GPU for a couple months)... and this revives it... for free :D

My 8800gtx is alive. PLayed a round of Left 4 Dead and ran Mark06. So far its perfect. And this card wouldnt even boot.

do you think this method will repair my GeForce Go 7800 GTX? take a look at this particular damage:

[Tomorrow I will be oven baking my card]

only one way to find out! :D

woot. 4 fixed cards in less than a day!

Im now using a PNY 8800gts that use to artifact. Doesnt now.

Thanks OP.

This method fixed two cards I had that were useless until now. I have a 7800 gt somewhere that artifacts too. Its next in the oven.

First person to cook their video card while also cooking pizza rolls and post pics wins the internet.

OP, you have started a revolution! Amazing trick, and even more amazing that others are using it with consistent results.

I may try this tonight. I have an old x800gto and a 2900pro to try. Although neither artifacts, one just posts 'sometimes' and the other doesn't work at all, so I'm not expecting anything.

Toxic chemicals from heating electronics + your dinner = possibly unhealthy :p

The 8800GTX I used this idea on didnt even let the computer post.
And it worked!!!!!

This is fkn awesome that so many people are fixing their cards!!! +1 to OP :)

Perhaps I should put my artifacting xbox 360 in the oven and see if it fixes it! haha

I've used a method like this to fix the GPU on a Thinkpad T40 - except I used a heat gun because I knew exactly where the problem was.

I've been considering disassembling my hp notebook that died on me awhile back. HP's extended support links drill down through my model number and serial number but end in only a handful of P/N numbers which don't include mine. There are other problems with HP's like the hinges cracking, and there was just a recall on their exploding batteries too. Mine died just after the display started showing screen artifacts, then it showed fine colored lines oscillating diagonally on the lcd like some old fashioned crt tube defect almost. After that, the display only shows backlight and no post/beeps or anything when I turn it on.

The gpu is integrated into the mobo I believe. Its a dv93339us with a nvidia go7600 gpu. Since its a paperweight I don't have much to lose.

I tried this just as the OP stated with a broken 8800GTX I had. Put the card in and checked it after 10 minutes, my card turned into blueberry muffins!!! crazy!!!

amazing! Well if you got nothing to lose easybake oven it!

I'm pretty sure I threw out an old X800GTO card that wouldn't post a few months ago, but I'll dig around. If I still have it, I'm definitely giving this a try.

I wouldnt be too sure about that, this is the internet, 1 or 2 are probably legit, whilst the rest probably just jumped on the bandwagon for whatever reason.

But regardless, it is a good fix for certain problems and is worth it if you are out of warranty.

ur probably right but i would hope people wouldnt falsify their claims...

Meh, i'd believe most of them, simply because of how spotty hardware gets after 2-3 years of heavy use, and high temperatures.

thats how old my 8800 was when it died. almost 3 years. heavy overclock its whole life and the heatsink had been removed/installed multiple times.

I'm gonna have to try this with my old GTS 512 that killed my SLi setup.
