‘Remarketing’ May Be Coming for Web Store Browsers

If you’re the type who shops online and puts things in your cart or otherwise start a transaction only to cancel or clear the cart before buying, this article should pique your interest. A web service called Abandonment Tracker Pro is set to release next month and will give retailers the ability to engage you in “remarketing” tactics, which sound very similar to those used by vehicle and other big ticket salespeople when you leave the lot without buying something.

Abandonment Tracker’s remarketing depends upon knowing the e-mail address of the wayward prospect; knowing the phone number will make follow-up phone calls possible, too. (And if you’ve signed in, a store would be able to find you with the e-mail address you provided when you registered.)

Pretty smart.

I experienced something similar a few months back. I needed to get a certificate for a property that I'm renting out, so checked out some prices on a comparison site - less than 5 mins after which, I got a call from one of them (the cheapest, as it turns out). We had a good chat and, in the end, he got the business. I was actually quite impressed with this approach - I guess from a commercial angle, it said to me that this chap was a 'doer'.

IMHO, it greatly depends on what you're buying as to whether or not you might appreciate being contacted. In my case it was something that I NEEDED, not something that I wanted. I'm poorly organised at the best of times, so was happy to have it fast-tracked, so that I could forget about it and get back to loafing ; )
 
If sounds like what Newegg already does. I've gotten several emails from them "reminding" me that I have items in my cart after I've done some price checking.
 
Lol, they cant seriously think they will get away with this.
A great way to lose customers :)
 
GAH!!!!!!!!

Bad enough I can't look at (or buy) anything on amazon without getting 20 different emails over the next month offering hot deals in X. The only recourse amazon gives me is to never receive any offers about anything. I want the book notices though so that's not an option.

Having just bought an mp3 player+case from them, I've absolutely zero interest in buying a second (lesser) mp3 player, or a second case for it but they helpfully bombarded me with spam for that. It's even worse when buying gifts for someone else, or even just doing product research on something I might want to buy several months down the line.

"errr no I just wanted to see what the 'super ultralow' price that can only be seen when it is in the shopping card, it really wasn't that low, now fuck off!"

It sounds like you just need remove those items from your cart after you are done price checking.. I do the same often on newegg and have never been bothered with an email reminder.

I'm not that worried about it. An extra email a week doesn't bother me?
 
Any site that tries to "remarket" me will lose my business.

I hate when the only way to find out about tax and shipping costs is to have to add an item to a cart, especially when you have to register to even do that.
 
Sounds like ill be NOT logging into sites to check the cost of something in my basket....
 
Now this is the type of marketing an advertising that I want.

If Newegg comes back at me with a discount on something I specifically might be on the fence about then hey, I might just dive right it if given the right incentive!

This form of direct marketing is much better than random spam for dick pills that I don't need (mine works perfectly fine, thank you very much!) :cool:
 
Sounds similar to what I've been getting from Danscomp. They keep sending me emails not to abandon what I've got in my shopping cart. I logged back in and checked, there's nothing in my shopping cart. When I placed my order with them, I removed one item, because it wasn't the color I'd specified. Half way through checking out, I had to go back, and reselect that one item, to get the one I wanted.

There's a good chance I won't be buying from them again, if this keeps up.
 
it would be cool if they offered you what you had in your cart at a promotional price, or free shipping.
 
I never log on to a site to buy soemthing until I have my shopping cart exactly how I want it, and know the tax + shipping costs. If a site wont allow me to do that then I shop somewhere else.

Same.

The worst sites are the ones that have a "super secret ultra-low price!!!" when you log in, only to off you a 2% discount.

As soon as I see that I just go to another store, not worth my time.
 
Ya, I really don't like sites that hide the price unless you put it into the cart. I never bother with that and just end up going somewhere else.

I can see the majority of the people will not be happy with this service. When I'm in the market for a new car and go to the dealerships to inspect the models, when the salesperson asks for my number or email I'll tell them I will give it to them but if they contact me I will never buy a car from them, ever. It works very well.
 
Why is this news worthy? anyone that has CRE Loaded or OS Commerce already has this feature. Its called abandoned cart reporting.
