Plasmas & Input Lag - Need Advice Please!

Hi Folks,

I'm considering the purchase of a Panasonic TCP42U1 plasma TV. It would be used for Xbox 360, PS3, and HTPC (for movies).

I know the picture quality will be fine for HTPC usage, but my big concern is input lag. I've been told that Plasmas are not prone to input lag, and the TCP42U1 in particular has very (almost non-existent) input lag, and there is no need for a "game mode" or shutting off any post processing.

Is this accurate?

This particular model may be new, as I've found very little information on it.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm using the Panasonic TH42PZ80B plasma and the input lag is only noticable in guitar hero, it is easily adjusted to suit so not an issue.
The worst effect can be caused by the lag from an AV amps sound processing, causing you to have to set a negative delay for audio (delays the video) when watching video.
This is one reason I use the much faster (no delay) analogue out for sound and find the TVs response time to be an excellent match.

While I don't have a Panny plasma, I do occasionally game on my Pioneer Kuro 5020 plasma. As my Kuro is my main movie watching TV it's normal settings aren't conducive to gaming really (color, input lag, etc). While the lag isn't terrible - it feels like my friends 30" LCD in terms of response - it's still there. Thankfully, it does have a gaming mode that specifically addresses all of said issues. In gaming mode, the input lag disappears. Plasma picture response time is already amazing, so there's no issue there.

So, while I can't speak to the model you're looking at, I can say that plasma technology itself doesn't have any major drawbacks with regards to response time or input lag.

And not to sound like a fanboy, but my experience with my plasma is so vastly superior to my LCD bedroom TV (Sony 40XBR4) for gaming, movie, and TV watching that using the LCD in the bedroom actually bothers me now. So, enjoy.

Panasonic TC-P42S1 here, no input lag at all. It has a "Game" mode, but other than another customizable set of image properties, there's no difference.

Thanks for all the replies!

Lawless: There is apparently no "Gaming Mode" for the TC-P42U1. And that's my concern. If the S1 had it, and the U1 doesn't... why? Evidently it was necessary at some point? Or maybe like you suggest, it's just for another set of customizable properties.

This is mainly for a gaming display, and I'm concerned that the lack of a "Gaming Mode" will mean that I cannot turn off the post processing and therefore will experience input lag.

Or is input-lag a rare issue with plasmas? I know on LCD's it's a real problem. I would think that since they both offer post processing, they'd both have the same issue in this regard.

Thanks again folks.

nice info...

I'm planning on buying one of the Panasonic Vierra G10s

This one also has a gaming mode

If anyone has it, could you do an input lag test compared to a CRT in gaming mode and not in gaming mode please?

Mastakill, if you want further info on the G10 specifically, perhaps create a thread for it, or do a search. There's quite a bit of info on G10's.

This thread is about the U1, as I have an opportunity to buy one at cost tomorrow morning. However, since it doesn't have a gaming mode, and it's a newer model, I probably won't be able to take advantage of the deal, as I don't want to find out later that it's susceptible to lots of input lag with no way to shut off some of the processing.

Anyone happen to know more about this particular model?

Thanks,

Grays

Panny Viera 50G10 here -- no discernable lag. Press a button and it happens

Gersson, are you running in "Game Mode" or anything similar that shuts off most of the post processing? Although it's a very different model than the U1, it would still be interesting to know...

Thanks.

The TC-P42S1/G10 use Panasonic's "NeoPDP" panels that are the newest generation. They're supposed to have less power consumption, subfield motion, better contrast and don't suffer from retention hardly at all. I would consider this the main reason the U1 with an older panel might suffer from lag.

Sorry I am late to reply but no, I am able to use any mode without lag. Samsung LCD game mode sucks so I think I know what your concern is. I am able to set the color temp, etc without any compromises.

I like to use Custom mode.

I also own a Kuro 5020 and I confirm that the lag is gone in gaming mode. Also, respond time is non-existant in all modes.
I agree that Kuro Plasma >>> <Put manufacture name here> LCD
