I’m sorry but I just have to comment on this prediction that there might not be a another next-gen console…ever. C’mon, really? Really? Did he just say “ever?” We’re not real big on analysts predictions around here because, let’s face it, a lot of them say stuff like this.

We note that video game software sales typically peak in the year prior to the introduction of a new generation console, as many consumers begin to slow purchases in anticipation of purchasing a new console the next year. We do not expect a “new” console in 2010 (other than the long-rumored high definition Wii, which is likely to upgrade the Wii to current console technology). We do not expect the “next” generation to begin before 2013, if at all .

Ok, yeah that's pretty lame. Reminds me of the same people who keep predicting that last version of Windows.

Doesn't affect me. I don't own a console. If anything I'd like them to change their emphasis back towards PC gaming.

And the CueCat and Ageia's PPU are the wave of the future....

thats right gentlemen, there will be no more new consoles!

*looks out window*

oh how cool, a flying pig!

Dream on. When you have companies like Ubisoft going to the press and hinting at moving all their development to consoles because "the pirates made them do it", you can imagine that other development houses will also follow along soon. You can bet that over the next few years we're going to see less games being developed for the PC. You have to remember that as these game development companies grow in size, their emphasis changes from building new, innovative games, to milking their "game franchises" for every damn penny they can.

A few years ago I thought this would be true.
I just assumed people would realize they were paying for PCs to play games on every 2-3 years when they already owned PCs capable of playing those games.

Then I realized how attached to the whole console gaming experience people are.
Personally I far prefer PC games, but whatever you like you have to admit the feel of PC games and console games are completely different.

and I don't mean just because of mouse/keyboard vs controller.
This should be apparent by the fact PC games ported to console usually suck and vice versa.

I don't own a console either and probably never will and there will always be big title games on the PC as its still a shit load of money to be made there, even with piracy.

PC and consoles are going to exist side by side for a LONG time, especially given the fact that by the time the next gen consoles come out this current gen will like a 1979 Timex LED watch compared to a modern PC. That kind of power will be always be used by developers one way or another.

That's just how these cycles work. We hit a point where the technology was a little longer lasting than usual thanks to advanced graphics cards and multi-core processors. The second a Wii HD is announced, you better believe Sony and Microsoft will be pimping something that makes the Wii HD look like a child's fingerpainting, because my Wii sits gathering dust because the online sucks and the graphics are terrible.

I'll be expecting the NeXbox 540 HD Remix teasers to start hitting in the middle of next year.

I think it will be a while, but at some point the line between PCesque devices and PCs will blurr.

If you have a box under your TV that can browse the internet with firefox, play games w/ a controller, record TV shows, stream movies,etc....

Is it a gaming console, a DVR, or just a computer?

In that case those morons wont get my money (because I dont have any console) - I will simply buy PC games made by someone else....

He is correct on one thing, the developers, don't want another generation for the x360 and the ps3, simply because they have to leverage there game engines for a while.

A can see 1 more evolution, in 3+ years moving to pure 1080p gaming, since right now a lot of consoles do 720p and upscale, or even lower.

True, this is already the case. What makes a PC a PC is its power and openess over dedicated devices. Maybe one day all games will run in the cloud and we'll just play games on out cell phones if local processing power becomes irrelevant.

I don't really give a shit if Ubisoft stops making PC games.

Aren't all the good PC games usually fairly indie to begin with?

The if ever part is idiotic. The only way that would happen would be to effectively roll up the technology into some other ubiquitous gizmo, kind of like the cell phone has done for the wrist watch and alarm clock. The candidates are the TV and the cell phone (in the form of better cell phone gaming and and cell phones with a video out like the PSP has). Both of which are a ways out from providing a replacement for current consoles, much less refinement and/or improvement of the content.

As fro uncertainty as to when you will see refreshes, there are a lot of compelling reasons for why all the console makers won't do a refresh at the usual 4-6 year interval and push for making money on the software and add-ons for a bit.

I like PC gaming, but it just isn't nearly as convienient as dropping in a disk and playing immediately. It's simply a different experience.

This would not be a viable option for a long time. In either case, as long as there are PC's, there'll be PC games.

Agreeded, at least in the US the broadband providers need to get their heads out of their collective arses, (or eachothers,) and upgrade the infrastructure otherwise being able to stream a game in HD will be a long ways off... Then there are the proposed bandwidth caps; there's a fun little nugget to throw on top of this.

Maybe we'll see a resurgence in pc gaming between now and than. We have windows 7 and directx11 coming soon, as well as an extremely competitive hardware landscape which could help push developers to push the envelope since we have all this new technology coming out, and hardware available for the cheapest it's been in I dont know how long.

PC Gaming imo hit rock bottom the past year or two and I hope now it can slowly pick itself back up. The quality of PC games and PC Ports especially has been on the rise. Things aren't perfect but they're getting there.

What ever happened to Sony's PlayStation 9? You know the Cell processor directly interacting with the brain.

I hope there are no more new consoles.. Once they started trying to make consoles complete entertainment centers, they've sucked. Not to mention that a computer is pretty much the same thing (and more), with a keyboard and a mouse. I don't see the need for them.

"Who wants to buy and bleed more money on the S-HDTV?"

And that's another sign of decadence.

Thank you MR. Techy.

Even though i do not play on consoles, i highly disagree with this assessment. If there are no new consoles for 4 years they will lost ALOT of marketshare to PCs. PCs already have the edge in almost every way except for price and as pcs get cheaper to build and game on, consoles become less important. Console manufacturers WILL have to come with something within the next 2 years or less.

Exactly I was kind of annoyed at the repetitive nature of repeating the same game genre especially pushing movie games associated with when a movie comes out.

Seriously like the Wolverine game that came out the day the movie comes out. Have you ever seen a game that was successful that complimented the movie?

Game developers need to pull their head out of their ass and realize that the PC Gaming sector is far more advanced than the console thus allowing them to employ many tools at their disposal rather than being restricted to the console's capability.

ie: PC Fallout 3 at maximum was superior but X-Box 360 was alright whereas the PS3 was complete ass.

Especially when that there were great games that came out during the 2001-2003 years like Railroad Tycoon 3, Freelancer, Rise of Nations, Knights of the Old Republic, etc then PC games just fell off the earth because they wanted to put their best games restricted to the console. Fable II for example looks excellent on the X-Box 360 would have been better used for the PC.

The cost to build a good gaming machine is coming down especially with the Radeon's line is offering excellent option to get the best performance for the buck.

X3 processor + 4770, etc you can come away with a better gaming system rather than the old outdated shit that they still have for the consoles that cannot be upgraded. However people like us knows that we can upgrade and we're the ones paying for games to play because we expect the best and full experience of playing a game.

xbox360 is built off teh tech ibm started with sony... the core... its the same tech with a diff name.

the ps3 will most likely double its cores as mentioned in previous ps4 articles, maybe even tripple as costs of cores go down , cooling abilities increase and size decreases.

so ps4 will be much cheaper/easier to produce because of scalability. most likely the joke about wii being two gc's slapped together... will not be so funny when its xbox360>2 or ps4... since they will most likely use similiar techs.

that or scrap it all together and bankrupt themselves further.

I Think that the consoles greatest strength is that the hardware is the same. This allows developers the ability to maximize their efforts on gamming not compatibality.

Do these analysts actually get paid for this? Is there a bottomless pit somewhere we can push them all into?

You know they are probably right. Each generation brings consoles closer to being a real computer. right now they are just computer wanna-be's. The gap will continue to close in, but keep in mind there will always be slight separation due to the fact consoles need to be dumbed down for the knuckledraggers out there. I would assume that devs would rather build one game and have it work on all platforms. Of course then Microsoft and Sony couldn't have their own special little exclusives so gamers can rub Vaseline all over their heinie and they can feel special and different from everyone else... ;)
