Should I step up to GTX 275?

I got my evga gtx 260 216 core 55nm back in February so I still got roughly 30+ days for a step up. I am currently running dual 22 inch widescreen monitor with 1680 x 1050 resolution with core 2 duo E6400 OCed to 3.2ghz. From what I read, the GTX 275 would provide me roughly 15-20% proformance increase iof I am reading ti correctly

According to EVGA, 1792 MB step up would cost me 70 + shipping to upgrade and roughly around 20 dollar to upgrade to the 896 version. Is it worth it so will the 275 be too powerful for 22 inch?

Another thing, think my Enermax 500 watt can handle the 275? It could handle my 260 no problem but Isince 275 would require a bit more power so I got a little worry.. Also, anyone now what is Best Buy GPU return policy? I sold me 8800GT when I got my 260 so I would need a backup card while the step up is in progress. Should I just go to best buy and pick up a cheap card and then return it when the step up return? What is the best mail carrier to ship a card back to evga for stepup?

The only upgrade worth stepping-up to would be at least a GTX 285 or a 295. That's just me though, but I already started my step-up process to a GTX 275 from my 9800GTX.

For $20 I'd go for it. Its the same speed as a 280 for the most part.

I would for $20. I could step up for $45 but it's not worth it to me. EVGA does not match the market in terms of price drops. They are usually 4-6 months behind. Even if the 275 drops in price in a month they won't match that till the 3rd quarter or later, making the step up program not as good as people make it out to be. If EVGA.com match market price drops then step up would be an amazing deal and would give almost everyone a reason to buy EVGA products.

Apparently, it's only going to cost me shipping to step up to a 275, haha. I think I might just have to do it.

Or I could put out $110.63 to go to the 285... hmm.

EDIT: Joined the queue on the 275. Now, we play the waiting game.

Stepping up to a 285 wouldn't be worth it, from what I've read... There's only 25-50MHz difference in clock speeds and while the memory bandwidth is higher (448 vs 512 bit memory bus) I doubt it's more than 3-5% performance increase for $110 difference.

nVidia basically just eliminated the 280 and 285 from their own market by releasing the 275... There's almost no good reason to get the other ones anymore, unless you already have one and are going to an SLI configuration.

I've given it a second thought and others are right about that. Nevermind what I said in my post.

So if it would cost me 20 to step up, if u count both shipping it in and getting it back, would ti cost me o upward like 40 to get it?

Depends on where you live. It cost me $13.60 to ship my 260 from VA to CA with insurance via UPS. shipping from eVGA to me for my upgrade was only $6.95.
So $21 for standard UPS ground. If you live closer to CA, it will be a few bucks cheaper.

As funny as it sounds, I've seen benchmarks where the 275 beats the 285.

That shouldn't happen, ever. They're based on practically the same core, and the 285 has more shaders clocked higher with more memory bandwidth. That makes no sense -- sites must be faking reviews, or something is just outright wrong.

why doesn't this forum save spaces? it deletes extra ones... arrrrrrrrrgh.

Wow, I can also get one for cost of shipping only... but I have 37 days left on my step-up. I think I will wait a few weeks and see how things shake down. This looks to be a pretty awesome value though.

I think there's a waitlist of 150-200 already, so you could put yourself on the list now, and it'll probably be 2-3 weeks before they get back to you. I am #106 on the list from April 4.

Next Step: Waiting In Queue: #49

Ugh. too long a wait. seeing as I did it the day it launched. :p

I could always sign up for the waiting list and change my mind as long as I didn't ship the card in, right?

Yes--- but you get re-queued again. I switched about 4 times and finally landed on the 285 that I have right now.

Yes, actually, they do. What the fuck was Nvidia thinking releasing this card? They just shot themselves in the face.

Meh not really. Considering the games that are out now and the way things have been going overall with hardware requirements, the GTX285 should be in the $300 or under price point. It just does not bring that much to the table, even if it is twice as fast as 8800GTX. I only consider high-end cards when there is some killer application to pair with it.

Unless you are desperate for a new card the right thing to do now is wait for the DX11 cards because those will probably last for a few years. The 275 probably has less than a year of useful life before you start lusting after the next card.

I don't think dx11 will be all that great. We all saw what happen with the dx 10. Btw, My queue is down and I am down to the step of paying evga and then send the card in but I am still debating about it.

I have to send mine in, I was # 49, got an email later that day, uploaded my invoice, go an RMA # about 2 hours after that. Now I just have to send it in.. Now of course that doesn't mean I'll get the card sometime next week, but hell I can wait.;)

is there a limited time window for you to send it in before they make you go through the whole process again?

With BFG it's a 14 day window in which they must receive the card, according to the policy on their site. Not sure about EVGA.

I say go for the 285 it will last you a long time before you have to upgrade again!!

I actually cancel the stepup since I still got a 30 days left for it. I am going ti sit a bit to see if there is announcement of something better and the waiting on a good price for a psu since my psu is probably not going to cut it.

here i fixed it for you

I think i will stay with 260 (216) and wait for the next gen cards

sent my card out yesterday, will let ya know how long it took, and the perfomance of the card seeing as I have a baseline of benches for the 260/216 core already.

Well, newegg has the 280 for $260 with cod5 and free shipping, but thats not exactly MSRP.
