What would you pick? A 1 year old WRT54GL or 3 year old WRT54GS?

I need to replace my shitty WRT54G2 as it sucks ass for wireless gaming when 4 or more PC's are on the network wirelessly as we keep getting disconnections left and right.

I've found 2 good routers on our forums here and both are used, I'm looking at a 3 year old WRT54GS that rarely saw wireless use and the guy ran DD-WRT but lowered the xmit power to the min needed for his 1 PC to be on the net, there were 3 - 5 PC's wired thru this router though I'm not as worried about wired load.

The other is a 1 year old WRT54GL that did have a slighltly heavier wireless load on it but is pre-flashed as well, this guy used his PC, iphone and X360 via wireless and about 3 PC's wired.

They are both going to run me about $40 shipped so which one would you guys pick?

Oh, the router will be used in a 100% wireless network with 2 desktops and 1 laptop. The 2 desktops are on the internet non stop from 2:30 - 3pm onwards to arround 9:30 PM during the week and are usually playing online games and downloading non stop. The laptop usually only gets on for email and almost daily 1 - 2 hr lan/net gaming sesions which also include the other 2 PC's. Every other week we have 4 - 6 PC's connected wirelessly for lan gaming sessions which usually span 2 - 3 days and last from 3 - 8 hrs per bout so this is when traffic will be the highest and also the reason I need a new router.
 
Flash your current wrt54g2 router with DD-WRT..see if that gets her running smoother.

240MHz, 16 megs.

The wrt54gl is a step down, older 200MHz processor, 16 megs of RAM.

The wrt54gs came in various versions, 200MHz processor, earlier versions with 32 megs of RAM, later versions with just 16 megs of RAM. But some of the later versions have the same processor as your wrt54g2...they're the same router, just in the older case.
 
I've got the Linksys WRT54GS v.1 with 32MB of memory. It's running DD-WRT with high gain antennas, OC'd to 240MHz, and has the gain cranked up to around 95mW on the antennas. It's probably the most solid router I've owned. It never gets bogged down, never overheats, and never freezes. I run almost 400GB/mo through it.

But, I have worked with the WRT54GL, setting some up for clients, and it was equally as good as far as I could see.

Working with the WRT54G2, I had so many freezing/overheating problems with those, I returned every one of them I tried. Total garbage IMO.

Yeah, if the DD-WRT flashing doesn't help the router I'ma ditch it and grab the GL or GS but I'm just trying to fig out which one to get if the G2 doesn't cooperate after I flash it.
 
I have a WRT54Gv8.2 and just flashed it with DDWRT. That's probably the best thing I did for that thing. Before, I was getting router lockups and intermittent connectivity. Now, its pretty darn stable.
 
Flash current with DD-WRT. If it gets better, great. If not, buy a newer router and not something several years old.
 
What's the hardware version on the WRT54GS? I may be interested.
