Hello,
I just purchased a Asus rampage II Extreme and was hoping you all could help me choosing a Cooler for my i7 920.

I would like something for a moderate OC but leave all ram slots available for Corsair Dominator 1600 series.

I Have two in mind:

Thermalright 1366RT
Zalman CNPS9900 LED

I have been told the Zalman fits with all ram slots open but I really don't want the blue led. Can that be disconnected?

Thanks,
ButchB

Moderators, wasn't sure to post here or in Cases and coolers sorry.

take a look in the overclocking and cooling section.. theres a lot of threads talking about the i7 920 cooling and should give you a good idea on what heatsink you want..

There is but one sensible choice for air cooling. The Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with LGA1366 bracket.

It is absolutely pointless to go with the Zalman since it costs an exorbitant amount of money for the paltry cooling it provides. I recommend that you go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme like Dan suggested, or if you would rather something less expensive, the Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V is also a great option.

I too like the Thermalright.( no led) It is just I might want to add another 6gigs of ram and concerned if it will fit using that cooler.

I'll take alook at the Xigmatek. Will all 6 slots for ram be available?

I am cutting out a paper template for the Thermalright to see if it fits. Save me some time please.

Dan_ D with that cooler installed can I use all six slots??

Heahhhh!! Happy St.Patty's!!! Full of Jamisons and havin a great time.

Butch

Ahhh I see you didn't answer if all six slots can be used!! If your sig is correct your not even using a Asus R2Ex. Can you really have an opinion if your not using the MB in question? No disrespect meant. Of course unless you can link to where all 6 slots are open using the Xigmatek.

Happy St.Patty Day

Based on the way the cooler is designed, I do not believe it will impede the RAM slots, even when all six are occupied. The reason I did not give an absolute answer is because I do not have the board and have not tested it myself. So I can't tell you with absolute certainty, but I think it's a pretty safe bet.

Yes you can. The cooler clears it easily, the fan is what matters. Some of the thicker fans won't allow you to use them all, but the one our test Thermalright Ultra 120 came with did.

Thanks Dan!!
Do you believe that the weight is distributed as to not harm the MB. That sucker has some bulk to it. I will order the version that is called 1366RT that should come with the MB plate and a 25mm width fan.

Thank you again,
Butch

I may agree with you except when it comes to dollars and cents. To have an answer from someone who has first hand knowledge or use is of a great importance. You have neither of the MB or cooler on the MB. Your info of another cheaper cooler I thank you for.

The mounting bracket is designed in such a way that the board will be perfectly safe from damage. They wouldn't sell it if that weren't the case.

Went with the Thermalright 1366RT. Did a paper cutout and it is huge. Hope it hangs on to the MB without issues.

Thanks,

I have the Xigmatek on my R2E with all 6 slots full. No clearace issues, anywhere

When mounted on the MB would it be advised to rig some sort of support. It does seem to droop just a little.

I'm thinking of fishing string. It's clear and could tie it off to the top fan.

Zero82z believes that the wait should be fine using the backing plate that comes with the cooler.

ive never seen someone on here get a damaged mobo from using a TRUE120..... and a lot of people have one. i used one myself on my last x48 build and it was great.

Thanks! I just never used such a large cooler before and had things rolling around in my head.

It's on and system booted!!! Vista 64bit went really slow on the install but I think it was the SATA drives. All drives recognized and all up dates in. Now lets see what I can get on air stable.

I would hope for just a little extra on the OC to make all these $s worth the build.

Thanks guys,
ButchB

First of all, hotlinking images is against forum rules. I suggest you remove them. Second, those tests were done with an X6800 at stock, which isn't exactly a very hot CPU, especially at that speed.

Corrected, sorry.

If anything, noctua showed an improvement when temperatures went up.

In the latest xBitLabs article on coolers, Noctua shows similar if not better peformance then 120 ultra.... So.... :p
