yea i think is would work fine with vista...but i cant seem to get it to work on windows server 2008

I've just installed Tversity on my Server 2008 x64 box and successfully connected the 360 to it (playing video and music). Did you add an exception to the Windows Firewall (or disable it)?

Is ICS enabled on any network adapters by any chance? I remember that I had to disable the service in Vista just to get media sharing working.

i left the firewall option checked on the install option. when i get into tversity its saying it can not connect.

The Media Player/Home features are not on Server 2008 or are shut off. It's not a desktop OS and that's why they whole "Server 2008 Workstation" stuff dies fast. People realize it's missing a lot of the stuff you use everday. Once you reinstall everything you need, you have Vista that cost $800.

Yes, the media sharing funtionality of WMP11 is missing (you can still add WMP11 itself through the Desktop experience role), but TVersity is pretty much the same thing as media sharing and so far I haven't had any problems with it.

i understand that its not a desktop os media player business...since im using it as a file server i wanted to see if it was possible just so that i can stream to my xbox or ps3....and it seemed like tversity was perfect for the job..its just that im getting some wierd connections problems with the program

all i know is that its on the task bar and in the process in the task manager. im not sure where the TVersityMEdiaServer is

Easiest way to know that the TVersityMediaServer is running is to open up the 'Run' dialog box (Windows Key + R), type 'services.msc' and hit enter. When the services window comes up scroll down the list in the left pane until you see the service name "TVersityMediaServer". If it's status doesn't say Started, right click on it and select Start.

i get some kind of error....."EROR 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

then it says windows could not start the tversitymediaserver service on local computer

Hmm... try opening the TVersity program, click on 'Settings', click on 'General'. In the 'Media Sharing' section click on the 'Start Sharing' button and see if that does anything.

Try stopping the service and waiting a few seconds after it is ACTUALLY stopped and then start it up again.

I have to do that myself from time to time to get TVersity going on Vista x64.

says...."the tversity media server is already running of the service cannot be started."

It sounds like that TVersity is borked. Reinstall it and report back. I'm sorry for all the shots in the dark but when I installed it on Server 2k8 it worked out of the box (after disabling the Windows firewall of course ;))

damn..i have reinstalled like 4 times with differnt options i duno whats going on....i turned of UAC just to get it to install and i thought it would be a breeze..i guess its not. are you using server 2k8 standard?
thanks for the help

Server 2k8 Enterprise x64 edition (only thing they had on my school's MSDNAA page :D), but it shouldn't matter what edition you use. Are you using a 32 or 64-bit edition of Standard?

When I installed it I unchecked all the Ask toolbar crap and the video subscription stuff (or whatever it was). After I installed it I went through this process:

1. Started up the main program. It immediately bitched that the server wasn't running so I went to the Settings page to turn on the service.
2. Clicked on the Library button. Added my music folder to the library and was done with that.
3. Went back to the Settings page and set the Media Playback Device to 'Xbox 360'.
4. Turned on my 360, tried to connected to my computer, bitched that I might have a Firewall that may be blocking the connection.
5. Completely disabled the Windows Firewall (hey, my hardware based one is more than enough).
6. 360 still bitched, but I went through the media connection test or whatever it was called on the 360. I found my computer in its list and was able to connect and play music successfully.

im using standard..and yea i didnt install that ask crap....but when i first load the program it says something about it cannot connect right from the get go. cant even add a folder...

heyo,

first off, windows server 2008 is not an OS you want to use for media streaming to a console. It is missing a specific media sharing service that exists in vista but not server 2008. This is because microsoft considers vista to be a consumer OS, with media sharing support, they consider server 2008 to be anything but media sharing haha.. installing WMP11 will not solve it either.

Although I'm unsure about tversity, ORB will do what you need...although they havent quite perfected there console streaming (usually poor quality for me) but its worth a shot: www.orb.com

Another thing you could try is possibly setting up a virtual machine of xp or some other OS that pulls in your media off the host OS. that may work...

but, for me I just grab an old turd machine and throw xbmc/boxee on it, stream videos from a shared folder off my server 2008 storage box.

hope that all made sense.

i think i might just install vista on it to solve my problems..i know that sounds weird. lol

TVersity disables that media sharing service during install so it can run it's own media sharing service.

this is what i get on installs/reinstalls

tried to start the service manually like was told on a previous post

OR maybe i can just run vista on virtual machine and share the files through there...so it can be seen on an xbox or ps3
