Just ordered the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA

@mannequin80, that's where I have it now, and its almost spot on. As far as the service menu goes, given that we have advanced exchange, I wouldn't think that tinkering around in there would hurt the warranty since a new monitor get to us before they get the old one.

The calibration equipment used by the guy I know who bought 4 of them, is actually used in the service menu. Or I think you can do it both ways, but he did it that way.

We should start to see people really tinkering around in the next few months. I suspect a sort of off topic thread will be started over at AVS before long.

I'm at 100 and 74 right now to see if it helps the grey homogeneity problem.

As far as the 10e ICC profile, I didn't see any change before installing the MS color control applet, which I did last night. Managing profiles through the control panel doesn't appear to work.

And I have to say, all the gamma tests I have run since show it is quite accurate on my monitor. For all intensive purposes it shouldn't be as close as it is.

@10e, you have listed the color and contrast settings through the monitor OSD a couple of times at least. Are the settings on this page of 94,90,92, contrast 74 accurate? Because I swear they were different in another post, and the contrast was like 65.

So can I get an official word on this as to the definitive settings you used for the uploaded ICC? Also, in the tests I have run, its spot on 2.2, so Im assuming that is what you were going for? Why not 1.8?

Sorry Barnaby, I fixed my post. It was 99, 98, 100, and it should be contrast of 74. I used zero brightness, but you can set it to higher if you'd like. Thanks for pointing that out.
 
Got my monitor today. Have a few useful things to add. First off I upgraded from 2x17" screens, one PVA and one TN. I have an IPS monitor and a 22" Samsung TN at work.
I do lots of graphics(photography, etc) but don't have a color calibrator.
Right now the Dell is side by side with my Samsung 740T pva monitor and they are close enough in colors that it doesn't bother me for most work.
The PVA panel is richer in color and seems to have a deeper saturation but the Dell has similar picture quality. It just doesn't seem as rich when doing photo work. My brightness is at 10, contrast is 70 and I have the monitor on the 'warm' color mode. Its connected via DVI.

The viewing angles are great since I sit on my couch and watch movies from the computer. The couch is a couple feet below the level of the desk but the colors still look fine.

Backlight is very even and the blacks are good.

The recessed bezel reflects light a bit more then I'd like.
The stand is great but there is *no* cable management options built into it.

Power consumption:
100 brightness 78 w
50 52w
0 38w

Overall I'd say this is a great monitor when you factor in the price. I got it for $230 taxed/shipped and thats as much as me getting a normal TN display. Its a tie as to being better/worse then PVA mainly because its not quite as good at colors but has a lot better viewing angle. Overall I say either get this or spend the tons more and get an h-ips. There is no point of going in between because the differences will be so minimal.

the problem to me is red hue on the left and green hue on the right,but my camera could not capture the color tint effect seen by naked eye, and showing the picture on another LCD display make it even harder to detect the color tint. So I have some problem here to convince Dell about the issue, I may take some photos with another camera, as the color tint is quite annoying to me when viewing doc.
The former 2209wa doesn't have the tint.
 
Still not very great compared to some of the solutions I've seen. To me thats not cable management. Just a hole.

Whyyyyy do I live in Sweden..? Price in Sweden is about 460 USD...direct from DELL.
Well I keep looking for a new screen (had BenQ 2400WD but black was grey so I returned it)
 
I'm seriously consider returning my monitor right now, at least exchange.

One stuck pixel that refuses to go away no matter what I try + upon further checking, the top right half of the screen (diagonally) is indeed brighter than the left bottom.

What do you guys think?

why wouldn't you exchange it?
 
For one thing, I can try to get it for $210 instead of $225.

And second, reading the stuff about color uniformity problem here scares me.

I ordered TWO panels, one with uneven lighting and BOTH have stuck pixels. One have one and the other has two.
 
Has anyone compared this monitor against an HP LP2475w yet?

I have the HP and believe it or not it's actually a little too big for my small workspace...plus I don't need or use its wide gamut... so I was thinking of "downgrading" to this Dell 22-incher if the image quality and color accuracy are in the same ballpark as the HP.

Sorry if this has been asked, I didn't see it on the pages I viewed. Anyway, is the lack of 1:1 mapping a real problem on this monitor?
 
I don't really ever foresee the lack of 1:1 mapping to be a problem for me, in terms of how I understand it. In the reviews, its just a footnote really.

I only use this monitor for work that I bring home, or games. Most of which are newer titles that support the native resolution.

@kupop18, a sales rep I spoke with, who appeared to be quite knowledgeable, said that 23-24" IPS monitors were due sometime in the 2nd-3rd quarter. Dell is likely following the industry in trying to move their 22" stock in order to move up to a 23" to 24" standard.

From some accounts though, this is kind of a bastard monitor. So I think its safe to say the larger Dell IPS panels coming down the pipes wont be this cheap, relatively speaking.

I moved up from a 17" when I started this journey. And quite honestly, I cant ever imagine going any higher than a 24" monitor without changing my entire workspace...
 
I somehow doubt someone actually prefers stuck pixels + lighting problems, but hey, who knows right?

I'll talk to them tomorrow.

Unless you are hooking it up to a PS3, then not much use to it. Some older games do not scale properly via video card scaling, but the monitor also has a 4:3 setting which works just fine in these cases. I have mine hooked up to PC via DVI and Xbox 360 with VGA. The Xbox 360 does 1680x1050 so there is no need here for 1:1 pixel mapping or other aspect ratio scaling options like 16:9 or "aspect", which stretches to full height or width while preserving the aspect ratio. This is because 1680x1050 is the native resolution of the screen.

Weirdly enough, 20" monitors had decent ratio scaling options, and 24" monitors do, but most 22" do not.
 
Most likely it has been mentioned here but is this panel used in any other displays yet? This is awfully expensive in Finland. I'm thinking of switching from my Samsung 226BW which really doesn't do it for me anymore. Backlight bleeding is too much and viewing angles are awful.

I think it was the Chinese review, which first confirmed it is a IPS panel, also stated that the 2209WA was built on left over panels from another monitor run by LG, I believe.


Two people over at AnandTech got them today for $220:

I just bought pair of these, so far I'm quite impressed. I replaced my Dell 2407 A03 with these. I haven't done any extensive fiddling yet. I was glad to see that out of the box they were not eye searingly bright, the colours are not hugely over saturated and there isn't much in the way of backlight bleed (then again it's fairly bright in this room right now, I haven't checked in a dark room yet).

I got them for £196 each, which is $278 at the minute. Only slightly more expensive than the majority of the 'better' TN screens. I would say more about them, but quite frankly with a thread this long I doubt I can say much that hasn't already been said, besides I need some more time with them yet, I onyl opened them a few hours ago.
 
I've had my 2209WA monitors for about a day and a half, and while there is a little bit of color shift it really is not noticeable during normal use. There is a little shift, but I don't see it unless I'm really looking for it.

My financee looked at them yesterday, she didn't think it was noticeable either during normal use.

Now I'm just trying to decide if I'm going to keep my 2407WFP as well. 22-22 or 22-24-22? :D

what happned to the 2408?
 
i am trying to get replacement for my dell 2209wa. the dell customer service is such a hassle. anyone had to go through the same thing ? was transferred to customer service, and techniqual support. they weren't much of a help, they wanted to see what the problem was with monitor. asked me to install dell "Assign" so they could check their self. there was no point of doing that because they were gona send me the replacement anywayz. during this process, they needed an serial # tag that's on back of the monitor. since i couldn't find it anywhere, they told they cannot replace it unless there's a serial #. i was upset because after all this, they couldn't get me replacement. after that, i called again the customer service specifically replacement group. i told them the issue and right away they are sending me a replacement. just wish the first time was better experience. ::(

I was transferred 2 times but that doesn't bother me since I used the last Dell # I called... I would have gotten a replacement within 10 or so minutes if it had not been for the tricky placement of the serial number.

So, thats where it's located all. all this time, was looking everywhere in the back. the women who i was talking with didn't exactly know where it was. Stupid of me, i should have called the person who actually sold me the monitor. thanks for tip again. :D

In case some of you have been wondering why dell is discounting 2209WA at $212 shipped :) I think I may have found the answer. A dell rep told me today these 2209WAs were supposed to be bundled with a biz desktop system. That didn't happened so Dell has now excess stock of 2209WAs. The interest generated for the deal has been intense but there are still some left at $212 for now. About 1,000 I'm told.

I mentioned Sundi in my earlier post on AnandTech. And BTW, Sundi is she and not he, as I've incorrectly stated and others copied to other forums.

There is also another dell rep familiar with the this promo. Her name is Angela Smith and can be reached at 1-800-456-3355 x 9460376 or by email (her name with underscore @dell.com).

Mine is coming tomorrow, is there anyone that DOESN'T have color uniformity or color shifting issues? Like a tint of a color on a white backround?

Also, if I wanted a replacement, they send me the monitor first then I send mine back, right?

I have no such "tinting" on a white background.

I don't think my first one had tinting but this one has some tinting on the right side.. but no dead/stuck pixels so I'm fine... SINCE I rarely look at a completely white background :-/. I've been able to overcome this "feeling" have having to complain about any minor flaw(to me) in this monitor, and be happy with it. I only noticed the tinting because of your post... and checked just now. I think I can deal with minor tinting and no dead pixels :)
 
So I have my settings as 0 brightness 74 contrast with 99R 98G and 100B. Looks decent so far but my question is for those of you who have been playing with the settings do you think I should adjust my gamma as well? if so, to what? I have an nvidia 9800GTX+ video card.
