I'm sure this will devolve into some kind of fanboy war, but it certainly shouldn't. What I'm more interested in is which games that are super popular, AND critically acclaimed, do you just hate? It's one thing to say "I hate something popular" when it's some popular shit like N'sync or New Kids on the Block. We all know shit can sell in the millions. But what about popular and critically acclaimed? Here are my main offenders:

For the xbox:
Halo series, especially #3. These are like the definition of generic to me. I can't stand them either MP or SP. Critics who gush over these games should lose their right to use the internet.
GTA4 - Terrible mission system, hackneyed cliche ridden story that people call "high art", stupid friendship system, and seemingly immune to criticism by lazy writers who fight each other over who can gush more. Also, niko belic looks like a character from LOTR, certainly not like an actual human.
Bioshock - Just read the zero punctuation review and you'll have it. Too easy, too pretentious without any real depth, predictable design, and the "moral choice" that's touted through the game isn't any more complicated or innovative than 20 year old dialogue trees. Do A or B isn't a serious moral choice that has lasting consequences. Sorry.

PS3:
MGS - Stealth gameplay does nothing for me, And pretentious storylines that are insanely juvenile, but considered high art by internet denizens and 15 year olds.
LBP - Bad platforming with amazing graphics and set and background design, but at the end of the day it's a floaty jumping game with 99,999,998 bad levels made by retards and 2 good ones that I still don't want to play, because of point number one.

world of warcraft: it has sucked the life out of the world.

and sif pay to play a game

Mario Kart DS - I bought the game because seemingly everyone loved it and it bored me to tears. I can handle wonky driving physics (hello Burnout, my love) but a virtual lack of perceptible physics in that game got on my nerves. Back and forth, back and forth, shoot, boost, blah.

Maybe there are some games I'm too old to enjoy? Nope, I've been playing Feeding Frenzy 2 between Mass Effect sessions, a game my 7-year-old nephew turned me on to. :)

Halo (all of them), GTA (once again, all of them), and for PC games I'd say CS (any version of it).

Halo, played it on PC couldn't for the life of me understand why it had so much hype.

Final Fantasy series.

Still hate the entire series to this day. FF Barbie Dress up really solidified my entire view on the series

Doom 3

It got so predictable about an hour in people swore I had the greatest reflexes ever because the triggers were so easy to see and to know when a monster was going to come at you.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion. I just couldn't get into the whole, "Play how YOU want to play, do what YOU want to do" type of rpg. And it just got dreadfully boring.

oblivion, halo, world of warcraft, metal gear solid 4 ( i know i know, just couldnt get into it ), and any sports games like madden.

Halo series.
Gears of War Series.
Final fantasy (for the most part)
Bioshock

Other than that, next on the list would be WAR Online.

Final Fantasy 7 - Interesting setting spoiled by a pathetic main character and gameplay that made all characters generic.

wow and halo series. Also cod WaW, everyone just talks about playing it on live and they dont understand thats its not even cod5 or worthy of carrying the cod name.

Popular games that I just hate with a passion?

  • Gears of War series
  • Halo series
  • Call of Duty 4
  • Anything that has to do with Xbox Live. I hate that service with a passion and I hate the fags who live and die by their gamer score. I also hate the 360 with a passion.
  • I'm starting to hate Guitar Hero franchise because they now whore it out (3 titles/year).
  • I hate Madden franchise but have no choice because it's the only NFL game (fuck you EA)
  • Any game who's developer claims "online play" as a reason for less/neglecting single player content, yet still charges full price.

First:
Zero Punctuation liked it. He just pointed out the flaws which ever game has. So referencing it is a little...meh.

Second:
I think your problem with making your own thread devolve into fanboy from the get go is to call fans of the series 15 year olds.

Saying pretentious is pretentious. Ironic, right? Saying it multiple times shows you simply like saying it. Pretentious and high art. Right. Just how high and mighty are you?

So I can rail on halo and whatnot, but the minute I say something mean about mgs, I'm a fanboy? Got it.

This could be summed up as completely overrated games... but

Halo (entire series especially halo2) - a FPS with absolutely nothing unique about it for anyone who has ever played a FPS on a PC. Story was better then most, but gameplay was accessively boring with regenerating health. And god forbid we bring in the notion of dual wielding! I haven't seen that in a game EVER... *COUGH* goldeneye *COUGH*

Anything with the words Tom Clancy in them. all generic rinse wash and repeat games.

Madden - buy a new game for the new years updated roster! (if I need a football fix I'll play as my Houstin Oilers on Super Tecmo Bowl)

GTA 4 - more of the same exact thing as we played since GTA3, except for over the top tutorials, and now includes invisible cars.

The Sims - BORING CRAP! Seriously how much fun is it to sit and tell people to use the f-ing bathroom?

Guitar Hero - you know a series has gone to far when local news shows are having stupid competitions with themselves with this game. Not to mention that we will now see Guitar Hero : (insert crappy sellout band name here) now for the rest of our lives. Where is the orginallity? Sure it was new and awesome, but now it's overproduced to the point of wishing it really was an axe so I can chop off my head! South Park put it best when Stan and Kyle broke the all time high score by proclaiming... "CONGRATULATIONS!!!! YOU.... ARE.... FAGS!!!!!! "

Halo(all). Take an excellent concept game, turn your enemies into teletubbies that bleed blue and purple, aswell as carebears and purple(lol) creatures that shoot feathery darts and colored ice.

GOW2....its GOW, just turned the grey to brown.

bioshock. the game was said to bring revolutionary everything, but turned out to be just another corridor shooter.

all the recent C&C games. bad, just bad.

WOW. i dont need to say anything

I HATE Katamari Damacy. I think its a POS game that people only like because its named something stupid, its japanese, and its the cool thing to do. Seriously, i played that piece of crap about 20 minutes and it was about the dumbest game I have ever seen.

Soul Calibur 4 - Not a fan of any of the installments (other than Soul Blade, cause I'm just so old-school -.-), but 4 is just painful. Despite the reviews, combat revolves around two buttons, there is no combo system, and there are Star Wars characters for no other reason than cross-promotion (epitomised by the inclusion of 'The Apprentice' from the epic fail The Force Unleashed) and a cheap DLC opportunity.

COD4 was a real disappointment for me, the horrific AI in particular (move forward or fight a never ending horde of terrorists). The only thing I liked about that game was the gun selection...

For the PS3 I would say singstar, I cant stand this game with a passion and every damn time we have friends over the women want to play singstar and the men just wanna get laid.:D

For the 360, gotta go with L4D the game just isn't very fun to me. It's way to repetitive and I the source engine needs a new facelift cuz it looks like a HL2 mod to me.

And Halo 3, singleplayer was okay and that being nice and the multiplayer is horrible.

The Lego Franchise:
HATE the Lego games (batman/starwars/indy)... They're 'ok' for about 3-4 mins before it gets boaring. It's the same thing over and over again.

Fallout 3:
going to have to agree with Fallout 3 too. I was super excited about it... got it on release day and played it for about a week after... since then, it's sat around collecting dust. Oddly enough, I loved oblivion (and morrowind) but fallout seemed too "blah"... hated the leveling system and the ending... once the main questline was done so was the game.

God of War:
Never understood why this game got the reviews it did... didn't think it was all that good. I have some friends that love it, but I just can't get into it I guess.

Castle Crashers:
Got this on LIVE... played it for a little while and didn't like it too much. Since the latest update though, it's a much better title.

Dead Space:
Too much hype. Game was 'ok' at best...

Devil May Cry:
Yet another hack and slash button masher... I like some sort of strategy in the games I play... not mindless controller abuse :p (which is probably why I like rainbow 6 over most other 1st person shooters)

Up the difficulty level. DMC has always been mash-friendly until you unlock the harder difficulties. DMD mode has always been about knowing the game throughly.

Then again, you do have to play through the mashable stages to get to that point......

I'm playing through Ninja Gaiden II currently, though I am having fun, it's made me appreciate the DMC3/4 boss fights that much more.

On Topic - MGS Series. Original MGS I loved at the time - MGS2 was painful. MGS3 I was twitching after the first codex conversation. MGS4 I can't even bring myself to try it.
I really hope the director is serious this time and QUITS. The MG universe is a cool one, but I'd like a game not a convoluted/boring interactive movie.

Bring on the new blood already.

Gears of War 1 & 2 multiplayer. The games are fine, kinda short once through games. Great graphics and playability, but only worth a rent. The multiplayer system sucks, first more than the second. Although I did like the new hoard mode.

Halo 3. Halo 1 was meh for me but I really got into Halo 2, especially on Xbox live. I played it all the time, from the day it came out until the day Halo 3 came out and I finally got a 360. Halo 3 just ended up being a huge letdown. The story is weak and live multiplayer really sucks, especially after getting used to COD4&5 hardcore deathmatch. Did I really like having to empty clip after clip into someone before they would die?!? That's just dumb. I'm sure I could get used to it but I'm not such a big fan. And what's with the stupid samuri armor in multiplayer? Really!?!

So I can rail on halo and whatnot, but the minute I say something mean about mgs, I'm a fanboy? Got it.
What?

But I think I know what your trying to say but you're missing the point in your own posting:

you said critics who gush in reference to halo. Well fine. Not really harsh.
you said LPB has billions of bad user designed levels. ok
people who like mgs are 15 years old.

hmm...ok.

as for my picks on games:
Anything that doesn't end (MMOs like WoW or the Sims) I know everyone was going apes about Spore and I'm like...it doesn't end right? I'm playing that game right now, It's life...well...until I die. I don't want to work on a fictional character having a better life than me. Rather work on Me getting a better life.

lol. This for sure. I had trouble taking the post seriously at that point.

I hate:

Halo - all of them
GTA - all of them
Bioshock
Mortal Kombat or any other button mashing fighting game
