Machine Gun Mounted iPod

I can just think of the tunes that you can play while picking some insurgents off.

This just: Army Reports Soldiers death increases due to them watching their ipod videos during combat.

As I am sure many people have already noticed, it's not a machine gun, its a semi-automatic sniper rifle....

KAC contracted Runaway technologies to build an external ballistics calculator for the iPod Touch / iPhone named Bullet Flight. It is your standard ballistics application. You can set firearm / ammunition profiles, then call up the saved profile and enter your environment information, for example, distance, wind direction, elevation and temperature.

Wait I just read that. That's admittedly pretty badass.

I was about to say the same thing.

err no edit....

Just a civilian AR-15 with some un-needed attachments in an ugly brown color. It's not even a sniper rifle, it just has a flashy large scope on it.

Waste of a fine weapon.

err AR-10, sorry.

While it is fun to laugh at them using an ipod for this it makes some sense to use an off the shelf pda type device to keep cost down. The device has no moving parts and has enough storage to keep any maps that the solider might need.

Hahaha.... that is pretty funny/badass!

Seriously though, potential uses here? I don't have an iTouch, but isn't there some buddy finder or something where you could see other people using them? That'd be pretty damn cool to be able to see your other soldiers in the field with say, an overhead map or something.

Of course if you're in a combat situation and you're to the point where you need to rely on that.... that's kinda scary.

My buddy in Iraq carried his around with him for the first few days, then it got packed with that really fine talc like dust and stopped working.

prairie dogs ph34r these.

You sure? It could just be just one those nonstandard caliber AR15s?

Yep - It's an AR-10 (only its the military model) uses the 308 Winchester or the 7.62x51 Nato (basically the same)
And I wouldn't call it a sniper rifle the 308 goes subsonic and looses accuracy at about 900-1000 yards.

Haha, when I read machine gun, I was expecting an m249 or something mounted to a vehicle and I wondered to myself how many seconds of continuous fire until the internals of the ipod are completely destroyed

How can you tell? Is it the thicker upper receiver?

Probably meant for a more urban environment type of sniping, in which ranges beyond 300-400 yards are not nearly as common, and the more rapid fire of a semi automatic is more important that the long range pinpoint accuracy of a bolt action.

The ar-10 is pretty much just a big ar15. The 7.62 bullets are longer then the max size for an ar-15. The gun is based off this larger rifle.

Another thing about this ipod mount. For the consumer market it might have a good place as well. From a consumer standpoint the mount has options. Get an iphone touch and be able to use it for the weekend range shooting. Nice plus.

I'll pass.

The one from Barrett rifles is WAY better. It automatically adjusts your scope reticles for wind, elevation, range, etc etc, so the only thing you have to do is put the crosshairs where you want the bullet to go.

In a military operation, I don't think I would want that thing hanging down and blocking my field of view. It might just cost you your life.

My dad has an AR-15, and I'm looking to get an AR-10. :) And seriously considering a .416 or .50 cal for prairie dog shooting. hehe

Its actually the M110, which is based on the SR-25 which is in turn based off the AR-10 (which it says in the article, had you read it). Which is, you know, why it says M110 right on the front of the display

Its also replacing the M24, which has a similar effective range but is bolt action.

Exactly. The added magazine capacity and rate of fire will make up for any accuracy loss. I see this being issued for to a squad's designated marksman or to the spotter on a sniper team.

You guys are missing the point. We sell these to other countries, then we develop one that mounts to AK-47s an sell those.

Next major conflict, we send out "the signal" that activates the hidden 'pron mode'.

Our enemies will fall before they can say "boobies".

modern AR-15/10's are extremely accurate, as much or more so than most bolt action weapons.

sniper grade AR's are capable of half minute of angle accuracy, which translates to half inch groups at 100 yards, or, 4 inch groups at 800 yards. which is beyond the capacity of most shooters anyway. I'd say that makes it a hella sniper rifle.

Its actually not technically an AR10 its an SR25 from Knights Armament known as the SASS (M110) Semi Auto Sniper System. The Touch is used for ballistic data for the shooter to engage targets with known data on their rounds for distance, humidity, wind speed and direction, etc. Most teams were using Kestrels and Palms but the touch has more computing power.

edit: kllrnohj beat me to the punch

Well the Ar10 charging handle is located in a different place, and the gun in the picture looked identical in look and function to an AR15. Thats why I was confused as to the call on the AR10.

Not quite, the AR10 has a pull to the rear charging handle exactly in the same location as the AR15; its almost exactly the same except its longer to make up for the longer overall length of the reciever to absorb the length of the 7.62x51 shell.

Its been a long time since I've seen one in person, but the only AR10s I had seen had the charging handle located inside the carry handle. Of course there are always revisions and I am by no means an expert.

So what you're saying is that the only difference between an AR10 and a .308 AR15 is the name? (and of course who owns the names)

Perfect Terrorist killer:

Sell tons of AK47's with ipod touches.

When terrorist are in war, activate continuous 'I'm a mac' commericals playing constantly on the ipod.

Terrorists go insane, kill each other.

?????

Profit!

AR10 is a .308/7.62x51 AR based platform... there isnt a .308 AR15. the 15/30 is really a designator between the calibers because the platform is nearly identical in function and design abiet the -10 being larger to accomodate the larger round.

Now you have a few different companies that change stuff and make it their own (IE like Knights Arma. here with the SR25) and I havent seen an AR10 with a charging lever coming from the top. Some companies setup AR's to be side chargers ala the FN FAL style.

Quite the versitale platform (I have quite a few ar's, ar10s and a few 15's in 6.8, 9mm and a 300 Whisper)

I wonder if the camera can be tied back into the scope so it knows when to play the "head shot" and "monster kill" sound bytes?

Actually there are .308 "AR15"s, manufactured by numerous companies ranging from Bushmaster through Olympic Arms. Technically you are right since the "AR15" name itself is owned by Colt. And the "AR10" name is owned by Armalite. The name itself doesn't really denote caliber. However you can find AR10/15 clones in every caliber from .22 through .50 Beowulf.

I am on my second AR right now.

I found a picture of the orignal AR10, yay for google images
