Well I am posting this becuase of how much of a pain this was for me to get going. I have a Dir-655 (dgl-4500 waiting in the background) and many pc's behind it. I had a wmp54gs jsut stop working and I figured what better time to try some new technology....
Wow! what a pain!
So here goes for you in the same boat.
1st - I had tweak the router settings so that the 300mbs was possible
2nd - Lappy already had it so i confirmed those speeds were available....awesome!
3rd - get a new adaptor....
Here is where it gets funny --
I tried a dwa-160 - disconnected over and over. everything else stayed solid. so I took it back, but did a little more research....found out there are revisions to the dwa-160, hmmmm
anyway...
So i returned it and bought a DWA-552 thinking that maybe the USB is the problem...same thing would connect solid, show 300mbs, but then disconnect in the middle of streaming media. So took that back..
anyway...
Now I got a Linksys WUSB600n and noticed that they had a DWA-160 revision B, so I got that too...figured WTF, right? So i tried the dwa-160 (B1) and upgraded to the newest driver and BAM...has been working for 2 days! I havent even tried the linksys, but since this has taken so long I will jsut take it back anyway.

Well to sum things up...
If you have a dir-655 and want an N adaptor for streaming media I recommend the DWA-160 (revision B), but NOT revision A...
I hope this helps at least one of you.

How did you tweak router settings to get 300mbs?

I changed:
encryption to WPA2-AES
channel width to 20/40
change to mixed g/n if you use both
dir-655 stayed with firmare 1.1
dwa-160 - newest firmware
there are other settings too, but i have a WHS running so that will differ from most

must be your adapter I can't get past 160mbs with 100% signal.

I'm on WPA2-AES
channel width is at 40mhz
mixed mode g/n
firmware is 1.21

My wireless adapter on my laptop is integrated Intel 5100 AGN

Maybe so...
From what I read as long as you have your network set to WPA2-AES, and auto 20/40hz then you should pretty much achieve that higher speed. Odd though...
I stayed with the older firware as well becuase I have had no issues (knock on wood) so far. I only changed settings.
Try another adaptor with dual band just to see...you can always return it
