Weird GTX 280 + Adobe Reader Crashes w/ Newest Forceware Drivers & 2D Acceleration

Hey all,

I was wondering if my issue is isolated or if others can reproduce it. Please be aware that if you do reproduce it, it could very well result in a BSOD/hard reboot for your computer, so of course I want to warn you in advance - don't do it if you don't want to risk it - lol.

With the newest 64-bit drivers (181.20, as well as the last iteration of the 181's) on my GeForce GTX 280 (eVGA FTW edition), if I start the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 with the 2D GPU Acceleration feature enabled (Edit -> Preferences -> Page Display Tab), and I start more than one instance (ie. open 2 different PDF's), the second appears in a black window (document not visible) and eventually (several seconds later) results in a BSOD related to the nVidia drivers. (Note if I close the "black" window before the BSOD occurs, I can avoid the BSOD altogether...it's only if I leave it onscreen long enough - I've also experienced the "driver has stopped responding but has recovered" message instead of BSOD once).

Disabling 2D GPU acceleration in Adobe Reader resolves the issue, and I haven't had crashes in games, etc., using these drivers. In addition, 2D GPU acceleration works fine in the 178 drivers - no crashes whatsoever in them.

Sort of a weird issue, so I'm wondering if others have or do run into this. Thanks all.
 
Whoops - my mistake - typo. I'm using 181.20, not 180.20. Thanks for pointing out my error - I'll fix in the original post.
 
I updated to the new driver's and I'm having no issues with Adobe or anything else although your card is packing far more punch than mine. I always do a clean uninstall of the nVidia drivers, then I boot into safe mode and do a full cleanup with Driver Cleaner.NET. Sometimes it don't matter what you do, it may take a clean install to straighten it out.
 
While I didn't use safe mode, I did uninstall the nVidia drivers prior and also use Driver Sweeper before installing. (It didn't complain about anything it couldn't clean, so I didn't think safe mode was necessary.) Hmmm...
 
I have never used Driver Sweeper but I've heard of it. The instructions are to boot into safe mode for Driver Cleaner. See the link below, it is the freeware version for Driver Cleaner Professional. Now the one I use is the same but a little better because it is the paid version. I am new here so I don't know what I can and cannot post. But since you been here for awhile I'm sure you know the rules. Just say the word and I'll hook you up with the paid version.

Thanks for all the feedback. Guess the next step is to try Driver Cleaner in safe mode as directed here and see if that fixes my problem. (I have the sneaky suspicion it's not a driver installation problem, but it's of course entirely possible). Thanks for the feedback and when I get the chance to try this, I'll update with my results.
 
Okay, so I got Driver Cleaner instead (Pro version and decided to go ahead and get a legit full version). Uninstalled drivers, rebooted in safe mode, ran driver cleaner (detected and got rid of all nVidia and AGEIA related things), then reinstalled. Same issue persists. (And as mentioned, I didn't have this with the 178 drivers).

Just got done playing a game and everything else is working fine - just this Adobe issue. I'm thinking it may be an application issue, but it bugs me nobody else can reproduce it. heh. My system is very stable otherwise.

Any other ideas welcome of course. Just to reiterate, this only occurs with the 181.20 drivers when 1) 2D GPU acceleration is enabled in Adobe Acrobat Reader and 2) I try to open a *second* PDF document *while* the first one is open; the first opens just fine, as does the second if I close the first - it's having two open at the same time that causes the problem.

I'm still up. I might have put you through a lot of grief for nothing. It just hit me what you are talking about. I use Adobe Professional Extended. When I install Adobe, the first or second PDF, I get an error message saying something about 2D or something can't be displayed. Are we talking about the same message? You're given an option to check the box so the message will not be displayed again? I just check the box, the message never comes back. If we are talking about the same thing, dude, don't shoot me.
 
hmm, just recently, Firefox has been crashing on pdfs.
Sometimes it will, sometimes it wont, on the same pdf.
I also recently installed the 181.20 driver (on XP32, 8800GT).
Co-incidence probably but thought I'd mention it.

ps pdfs dont crash when opened outside of firefox.
ie downloaded first then opened is ok.
 
Strange....I wonder if you have a corrupt, pdf related Firefox extension. I remove all (2) adobe startup items and don't allow update's.
 
Interesting - my particular problem doesn't have anything to do with FireFox, but I can see how it could be related... When it crashes, does the PDF appear "black"?

No, Firefox has an error immediately I try and open a pdf (when it does crash, doesnt always happen) and firefox closes when I press ok.
I'm running my browser in a sandbox so I'll try deleting it later to see if that works but thats no help for you in your situ.
 
Well I'm planning a complete reformat and Windows reinstall in a month or two, so I'll be curious to see if the problem persists after that.
