Antec MX-1 3.5" SATA to USB/eSATA Actively Cooled Enclosure - $29.99 at Micro Center

It's been at this price for a while, I've just been avoiding it because I know if I go I'll end up coming back with a ~100lb industrial shredder that is on sale for $70...
It's still a hell of a deal though.

Nice deal... bought one at Fry's for $50 the other week. Luckily it was with a giftcard, so no loss.

Yeah, great enclosure. I'd get it if I didn't already have one. ;)

does it seriously only support 750GB hard drives max?

I'd get either a 1TB or a 1.5TB if I get this...

750GB was probably the biggest hard drive out at the time they printed the detail specs on it. Assuming it's just using a sata pass-through, it will support any size sata drive given your OS and controller support.

Good deal, but it seems like all the lower priced eSATA enclosures get mixed reviews, including the Antec.

If someone's willing to do the research, or take a chance, here's a couple of other less expensive eSata enclosures to check out at Microcenter:

- Kingwin $25: Microcenter and reviews at Newegg

- Eagle $26.99: Microcenter and reviews at Newegg

- Antec MX1 reviews at Newegg

- If someones interested in a dual-USB enclosure, the Macally is the fastest, coolest running USB unit i've tested so far. Buy.com and Newegg.
* Dimensions: 2 1/2" tall, 4 1/2" wide, 8 1/2" deep.
* Temp controlled fan turns on automatically when temps get too high (on/off only). Runs silently enough for my taste.

I like the MX-1 enclosure, but the fan can get loud in no time. I've owned mine for about 3 months and the fan is the only thing I can hear (a quite distinguishable "hummm") in my workstation.

what kind of temperatures does this thing see?

Is it all aluminium? the part that touches the HD? I have one thats an aluminum enclsoure but the fan and the part that the hd slides onto is plastic :(

I would suggest reading Silent PC Review's article on this enclosure, as well as the accompanying discussion thread:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article728-page1.html

As Devil24 pointed out, the fan on these enclosures seem to have a nasty habit of getting really loud after a time.

I do wish there was a standard for measuring "really loud." From the sounds of it you both are quiet fanatics and most people couldn't hear it over their main rigs.

Yeah, sure... it's the both of us being picky .

For those who can wait, it goes on sale at Fry's for $20 fairly regularly. Bought mine there about a month ago at that price. Fan is really loud even new.

Never tested nor read up on the AC ryan enclosures but i can confirm that the Macally enclosure i posted earlier gets pretty good reviews and it's the fastest USB external i've ever used.

Note that i've only tested speeds with large files, i've haven't transferred a file smaller than ~200 megs yet...
